Since the first composers started calling their works things like “nocturnes” or “serenades”, there has been music designed specifically to evoke the dusk or the night. And then from the romantic period onward, the night began to become associated with worry, or even terror. Schumann’s Phantasiestücke (1837) contain at least one nocturne movement in which the night is presented in a terroristic light (so to speak). In der Nacht, one of the great Schumannian moments, is concentrated into scarcely four minutes. Seventy years later, Ravel took the fear even further with Le Gibet, the central movement of Gaspard de la nuit – even more night – which tells of the gibbet where the hanged men twist gently to the sound of the night chimes; whileScarbo closes the triptych on the image of a nightmare dwarf. Finally, while Out of Doors by Bartók isn’t necessarily all set at night, the fourth movement, The Night’s Music, remains one of the most unsettling moments in all of piano literature. Born in Budapest in 1968, Dénes Várjon studied with György Kurtág and András Schiff. The winner of Liszt prizes as well as of Budapest’s Géza Anda and Leo Weiner competitions, he has performed at the festivals of Salzburg, Lucerne, Davos and with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Zürich Tonhalle, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the Kremerata Baltica.

Mozart was without a doubt one of Edvard Grieg’s favourite composers. When his mother gave lessons or entertained family and friends for an evening of music, it was the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart which made the greatest impression on him. During the winter of 1876/77 he arranged four of Mozart’s nineteen piano sonatas for two pianos by adding his own, newlsy composed part. What is special about Grieg’s adaptations of the Mozart sonatas is that he has not reworked them in the traditional – and perhaps derogatory – manner. Grieg’s unusual achievement lies in the fact that he has retained Mozart’s text unchanged, adding an entirely new part which can be performed together with the original. When both parts are played, they interweave and become something entirely new. Two different musical styles meet in dialogue, ending up in a symbiosis of colour and texture. Mozart’s music expands in time and space. Grieg’s additional piano part is a romantic’s respectful embrace, a romantic commentary; Mozart in romantic guise.

2020 release. Dena DeRose’s music is like a cool breeze; she’s wry, wise, impeccably musical, no-nonsense, and fun. After her three decades as a pianist-singer, DeRose’s voice and her fingers are on the most harmonious of terms. She’s not afraid of simplicity; DeRose has no time for hollow sentiment, nor does she feel a compulsion to outsmart the makers of the Great American Songbook. Her approach to jazz resides mainly in her swinging rhythm and pianistic phrasing. Her eleventh album as a leader takes it’s name from a breezy tune, full of hip changes, that was composed by Alan Broadbent. The lyrics, provided by the legendary Mark Murphy, resonated deeply with DeRose since when she’s not teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, she’s frequently on tour. Appropriately enough she is joined by three other HighNote artists-singer Sheila Jordan, saxophonist Houston Person, and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt-all of whom have appeared with DeRose on her global travels. With her long-time rhythm section of Martin Wind and Matt Wilson DeRose delivers recording that celebrates the life of the jazz artist and the friendships they make.

Originally released throughout Europe in 1999, this Blind Guardian/Iced Earth side project made it to American record stores a year later. Considering the lineage of Demons & Wizards, this Steamhammer/SPV offering is an automatic must-own for fans of latter-day European power metal. All-star membership certainly doesn’t ensure a quality recording, but the duo of guitarist Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth) and vocalist Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) does deliver a first-rate product on this, their eponymous debut. The music is sharp and punchy power metal, and Kursch’s voice is in excellent form, but the utter predictability of Demons & Wizards may disappoint fans curious about the possibilities of a Kursch/Schaffer collaboration. Every song would fit nicely on a Blind Guardian or Iced Earth outing. Demons & Wizards could disappoint listeners expecting a fresh take on power metal from two of the genre’s more successful practitioners. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Demon Hunter has quite a history under their belt with almost 20 years and 10 albums (including this one and War). They appeal to listeners who don’t want constant rough vocals integrated in metal, even though Demon Hunter does have its moments where screaming / growly vocals are prevalent in some songs and even more so in releases prior to Extremist. This time, Demon Hunter surprised many fans by introducing the concept of releasing 2 albums (War and Peace) on the same day and date, with 20 total new songs (22 if you purchase the Special Edition versions). In this review, Peace will be the main emphasis.

Anthony McGill, the New York Philharmonics principal clarinetist, and brother Demarre McGill, the Seattle Symphony Orchestras principle flutist, return to a beloved training ground, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO), for an album of works for flute, clarinet, and orchestra featuring world-premiere recordings of specially commissioned duo concertos. The albums title track, celebrated African-American composer Michael Abels Winged Creatures, was commissioned for the project by Cedille Records. Inspired by the flight of butterflies and other creatures, its solo parts are, in turns, delicate, frenetic, soaring, and powerful. The orchestra originally commissioned Joel Pucketts Concerto Duo for a 2012 concert with the McGill brothers. The work evokes family affection and sibling camaraderie. Franz Danzis virtuosic and elegant Sinfonia Concertante for Flute, Clarinet, and Orchestra, Op. 41, is a tour de force of late-Classical charm. Saint-Saëns youthful, virtuosic Tarantelle, Op. 6, draws inspiration from a southern Italian folk dance. It is something of a signature piece for the McGills, who performed the piano-accompanied version on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood when the brothers were 18 and 14, respectively.

‘Ghost City’ was written over the course of two years, between the bands tours in Europe, Japan and Mexico, before heading to Northern Italy to record it. “We figured it was the same price to record in Italy, so we brought our friend and producer Mark Roberts along for the ride,” says Devin Yuceil (vocals/guitar), “we booked a bunch of shows on the way down which pretty much covered our recording costs, which also meant that we had around a week of playing the new material everyday leading to the studio, a luxury we don’t often have.”
