Salvatore Accardo was born in Turin in a family coming from the South of Italy: his father Vincenzo, artist engraver of cameos was passionate with music and his mother was a primary school teacher.

At 3 he asked for a violin and began to play to ear, at 5 he began his studies in Naples with the musician and pedagogue Luigi D’Ambrosio, later he entered the Naples Conservatorio of San Pietro a Majella where at 13 he graduated full marks playing for the first time Paganini’s Capricios.

Admitted ad honorem at the Accademia Chigiana of Siena, Accardo studied there with Yvonne Astruc, former pupil and assistent of George Enescu, starting to be friends with his classmates: Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Charles Dutoit, Maurizio Pollini, etc.

Landing light and fragrant on the mind, Seoul’s Salamanda grace NYC’s Human Pitch with an airspun follow-up to their ambient snacks for GMT and Métreon.

After charming with ‘Allez!’ for Good Morning Tapes, the duo coax their rhythmelodic eastern percussions and vox into a lather of gently hiccupping structures on ‘ashbalkum’, their 3rd album to date. Echoing aspects of Korean classical music as much as Japanese environmental ambient concerns, their lissom sound is redolent of of Woo’s lilting confections and the fragility of Susuma Yokota, but packs a subtle, underlying swagger of their own where it matters, lending a fine balance of ying/yang energies that may well equalise heads in need, and suggest a purpose intended for both armchairs and ambient dancefloors.

Though this is a Blue Note reissue of two EPs, out on their Connoisseur 10-inch Series, only one of the two was originally released on that label. The first session, from 1953, is a group of quintets with little-known tenorman Frank Sokolow–one-time Chubby Jackson sideman with a pronounced swing inclination–and a couple of quartets without him. It emphasizes the crystal-toned, agreeable guitar work of ex-Stan Kenton Orchestra member Salvador, who’s still active today, playing on six familiar standards. The other tracks, recorded the following year, appeared on Capitol as part of the Kenton Presents series. Along with a few retooled standards, these include some less-usual compositions by West Coast mainstays Manny Albam and Bill Holman, as well as Salvador’s quite cool “Round Trip.” Eddie Costa doubles on piano and vibes but stays out of the way enough to keep from making a murk of the guitar. –John Corbett

Maurice Ravel took a compositional interest not only in the Spanish bolero, but also in the Viennese waltz. In March 1920, he completed the score of the work consistently entitled La Valse, about which he later remarked in an interview: “It is a dancing, spinning, almost hallucinating ecstasy, an increasingly passionate and exhausting whirl of dancers who get carried away in exuberance.” But there are also some grotesque distortions. They remind us that this composition, in addition to the sonorous glorification of the Belle Époque, also represents the dance on a volcano that was already deflagrating at the time.

Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson died eleven years ago. For many pianists, he was and remains a great role model. So also for the German pianist DIRK RAUFEISEN. To play Peterson you need fast fingers, good phrasing, precise timing, a comprehensive understanding of harmony and a lot of groove. All this paired with great feeling and infectious joy. A real challenge, which hoof iron knows how to master! The key lion is supported by the classically trained bass player GÖTZ OMMERT. His exceptional playing technique makes him one of the most sought-after double bass players in Germany. GREGOR BECK plays on the drums. On the one hand, it impresses with drive and spectacular technology, and on the other hand, with an extremely swinging and sensitive style.

The Album “Echoes” by Pianist and composer Dirk Maassen is inspired by encounters with his Fans. It is about the power of music to express feelings and connect people across spatial and temporal boundaries. Dirk Maassen has been keeping a musical diary for a long time. In it, he writes down the particularly memorable experiences in melodies. Many encounters with his fans have particularly touched him and inspired him to think about music as a means of communication. Feelings, sensations and experiences resonate in music, and people can experience deep connectedness even when they are separated from each other. Dirk Maassen has inspired this power to overcome space and time to reduced and, as it were, touching piano pieces, some of which he complements with orchestral arrangements.

Composer/pianist Dirk Maassen’s Avalanche feels anthemic throughout. The opening “Eclipse,” a beautifully undulating piece that sways to its own natural rhythm, is a rock song in miniature, while the richly scored “Allewind” is full of tense, urgent drama. “Helios,” featuring sound artist Max Knoth and string orchestra accompaniment, harks back to Nyman’s score for the 1993 film The Piano, and “Nocturne” pays homage to the simple romance of the theme from Love Story. But while this is an album of many influences, Maassen, a master pianist, assimilates and crafts them into his own stunning, original whole.
