Commercially, Earth, Wind & Fire were slipping in 1983. Though a decent album, Powerlight wasn’t the type of big seller EWF was used to. Maurice White responded with a change of direction that proved to be both a commercial and artistic fiasco. Working with very in-demand (and very formula-oriented) studio figures like Martin Page and David Foster, EWF went for a much slicker and more high-tech approach on the weak and disappointing Electric Universe. White saw that synthesizers and drum machines were playing more and more of a role in both R&B and pop, and wanted to acknowledge technology’s impact on music with this album. But EWF usually ends up sounding insincere and even sterile. The type of synth-funk that worked so well for the System doesn’t work for EWF. A few of the songs are interesting (including “Electric Kingdom” and the single “Magnetic”), but they don’t prevent Electric Universe from being EWF’s weakest album ever. When this release flopped, EWF’s members temporarily went their separate ways, with Philip Bailey and Maurice White concentrating on solo careers.

Faces is the tenth studio album, a double-LP by R&B artists Earth, Wind & Fire, released in 1980 on ARC/Columbia Records. The album reached number 2 and number 10 on the Billboard Black and Pop albums charts.

It has been certified gold in the US by the RIAA. In a 2007 interview when asked which EWF album is his favorite Earth, Wind & Fire leader Maurice White replied “Probably Faces because we were really in tune, playing together and it gave us the opportunity to explore new areas”.
The lead-off single was “Let Me Talk”. The songs “You”, and “Sparkle” followed as single releases. Unlike previous Earth, Wind and Fire albums, there was no U.S. tour in support of the album. This was also the last Earth Wind and Fire recording with guitarist Al McKay, who left the group the next year. This album is noted for featuring Steve Lukather, guitarist for EWF’s label mate Toto, on the songs “Back on the Road” and “You Went Away”.

Early Times is a Blues/Rock street poet, living in a gritty urban landscape spanning the Eastside street corners, bodegas, and the project park, ‘ populated by characters like Little Hustler, Uptown Charlie, Tijuana Madonna, Sweet Lou the Butcher, Ruby, Shakey, funky old Mabel, and of course Mary with her Cha Cha hat. Early and his High Rollers create moods so thick you could cut them with a chainsaw, and his incisive guitar playing is always spot on.

Early James’ debut features ten wide-ranging songs, co-produced by Auerbach and David ‘Fergie’ Ferguson, is full of world-weary wisdom. ‘Blue Pill Blues’ details a period when James, who was being treated for depression, quit his antipsychotic medication cold turkey. ‘High Horse’ is a lament of the ways his adolescent excitement faded with the arrival of the vices of adulthood, while ‘Easter Eggs’ finds the songwriter coming to terms with some of the darker sides of his heredity.

The opening title track sets the mood just right, its comforting guitar interplay and gentle vocals holding your hand toward an unseen destination that’s “still a ways to go.” “East Berlin at Night” is the definition of cinematic, almost like an Ativin song with the amplifiers turned down from 12 to 3, while the last two minutes of “Texas Cinema,” are the equivalent of a deep embrace from which you never want to let go. Why some sharp-eared music supervisor hasn’t utilized “In These Hills” in a movie montage of two people falling in love, I’ll never understand. This new edition brings it all back to the proverbial start, as it is being released on the Bloomington label Secretly Canadian which championed Ativin from the beginning and quickly became a home for Early Day Miners after the initial Western Vinyl release of “Placer Found.” The two unreleased instrumental tracks on side D are fascinating glimpses into creative paths not taken. “Prospect Refuge” is a delicious slice of posivibes math-rock, while the taut, vaguely ominous “Blue Casino” makes an entirely different song out of a riff later utilized for the standout “Jefferson” from the band’s 2003 “Jefferson at Rest” LP.

The 2012 double album collection devoted to the works of Motown session keyboardist (and Funk Brother extraordinaire) Earl Van Dyke. Originally, some of the Hitsville studio musicians would be „allowed“ to cut soulful Blues and Jazz tracks for the company’s Workshop Jazz label, as long as they handled the regular gig, cutting hits on the Hitsville U.S.A. assembly line. By 1964, however, Workshop Jazz was dead.

Motown made good on their promise, somewhat, giving Earl Van Dyke a rare opportunity in the spotlight by issuing in his name a single and a subsequent LP, That Motown Sound. Earl’s artistic disappointment belies the gems contained within those vocal-less Motown hits and the additional bonus tracks from Motown’s vaults that comprise Disc One of this set.

Earl St. Clair a name you should know if you’re a fan of R&B. For that matter, actually, you should know his name if you flat out love great music. St. Clair is making wholesome old school music sound new on his latest album My Name Is Earl. Spanning seven tracks, the production is a strong, upbeat compilation of effective, pure lyrics and throaty, powerful vocals.

If there was a more immaculate slide guitarist residing in Chicago during the 1950s and ’60s than Earl Hooker, his name has yet to surface. Boasting a fretboard touch so smooth and clean that every note rang as clear and precise as a bell, Hooker was an endlessly inventive axeman who would likely have been a star had his modest vocal abilities matched his instrumental prowess and had he not been dogged by tuberculosis (it killed him at age 41).

Earl Hines and Jaki Byard – Duet! (1975/2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

Earl Hines is seen as the “Fatha” of modern jazz piano (see Fatha and His Flock), while Jaki Byard is best known for his play on some of Charles Mingus’ greatest albums. Hines was a major influence on the 15 year younger Byard, one of the reasons Jaki had such a deep-rooted understanding for tradition. Byard’s A-Toodle-Oo, Toodle Oo is a romp with a boogie-woogie beat. Hines’ This Is Always has Earl’s and Jaki’s arpeggios flowing through this lovely ballad. The two offer up a harmonically lush version of the Hines classic, Rosetta, while I Can’t Trust Myself Alone is a Hines solo tour de force. Hines starts off the evergreen Sweet Georgia Brown rubato before the two take off on an up-tempo escapade. As Long As I Live presents a breathtaking battle between friendly giants, and Byard portrays Genoa To Pescara in an impressionistic solo. On La Rosita the two tango, exchanging lead and accompaniment with ease and grace. Two piano giants in an incomparable get-together – this is something to treasure.
