The Leipzig pianist and composer Jonas Timm and his seven-piece band not only captivate the listener with all their senses, but also take them along in the variety of their emotions. What seems to begin like an acoustic film noir, becomes more cheerful as the album progresses, and continues to go through more and more emotional states without ever becoming predictable. Much is reminiscent of Latin American dances, French chansons, soundtracks from old films and sometimes jazz. But wherever Timm goes with his band, his distinctive characteristic as a composer and bandleader is always maintained. Like a director, he stages his characters to get a maximum of expressiveness and group-dynamic individuality from each of them. But just as confidently as with the voices of his co-musicians, he plays with the expectations and memory of his audience.

Williams was one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, but she was also a victim of geography. Her technical brilliance, complete control of the piano, creative imagination, wit, and constant desire to stretch herself put her at the top of her field although relatively few (beyond her fellow pianists) seemed to realize it during her lifetime.

Award-winning composer Reza Vali is a native of Iran but is now based in the United States after studies in Europe. Vali’s distinctive cross-cultural style is founded in a quiet rebellion that saw him return to his Persian musical heritage. Following the dazzling concert opener Ravân, Vali has taken a text by 13th-century poet and mystic, Rumi, two traditional texts, and words by Vali himself, to create the moving cycle The Being of Love, with each song evoking a different aspect of love. Isfahan uses Persian modes and forms, and is among Vali’s most striking microtonal works, pushing the orchestra beyond its usual twelve-note sound-world in an exciting way.

A once abandoned Passion project by J. S. Bach? Harpsichordist and conductor Alexander Grychtolik, together with the Il Gardellino Orchestra, embarks on a captivating artistic experiment with this presentation of the Passion Oratorio BWV Anh. 169. The starting point for the partial reconstruction attempt and the completion of the work is the surviving libretto by the poet Picander from 1725. This unique endeavor draws the audience into a profound exploration of human empathy with the poignant suffering of Jesus and sheds light on a passion aesthetic we had not seen previously in Bach’s repertoire.

Herbert Schuch, Gülru Ensari – Eternity (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 01:18:36 minutes | 686 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Naive

Humans’ hope lies in art – the music of Schubert or Beethoven in particular, which gives us some idea of what worlds can still exist. What words can we use to make these works of art tangible? Not explainable, but tangible.

With this album, Turkish-born pianist Gülru Ensari and Romanian-born Herbert Schuch want to provide a space for experience, a place where they can carefully and tentatively approach the subject of eternity.

The connection between Messiaen and Schubert, Beethoven and Brahms? Nothing more or less than a perceived truth. An involuntary connection of lines that are already there, but are drawn into infinity and meet somewhere, like the parallel rails of a dead-straight track that stretches into infinity.

Ten years after his captivating recital, ‘Invocation’, the excellent German pianist, Herbert Schuch, born in 1979 in Romania, comes back to naïve. It is here, with his duo partner and wife, Gülru Ensari, that he presents his new album, ‘Eternity’.

As they did in their past collaborations with the SWR (‘Go East!’ in 2017, ‘Dialogues’ in 2018 and ‘in Search’ in 2022), they mix, within one programme, works for four hands and two pianos.

One of the Schubert’s late masterworks, the Fantasia in F minor, pairs here with the Variations on a theme by Schumann that Brahms composed on a theme that Schumann wrote in 1854. Three extracts from Messiaen’s monumental cycle Visions de l’Amen, composed in 1943 for two pianos, act as grandiose and contemplative interludes, and also as an introduction to the Große Fugue by Beethoven.

For Gülru Ensari and Herbert Schuch, each of these three works from the Romantic era connects with the divine part of Messiaen’s pieces.

In pushing back the limit of artistic creation, these four uncontested geniuses – Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Messiaen – expressed themselves outside of their times, creating bridges with worlds they would not have known, always expanding, in a never-ending quest for eternity.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 54:06 minutes | 1,13 GB | Genre: Rock, Blues Rock

Gary Clark, Jr. pushes hard on the envelope in JPEG RAW. He’s grown far beyond the blues into a multi-faced presence steeped in a variety of genres, from blues to pop and prog rock to the frontiers of modern funk. Rather than referring to a digital photo file, JPEG here stands for “Jealousy, Pride, Envy, Greed,” while RAW is an acronym for “Rules, Alter Ego, Worlds.” Given that kind of ambition, it’s no surprise that Clark’s lyrics have branched out into life’s most pressing conflicts, including a plea for unity in the album opener “Maktub”: “And if we don’t get it ourselves/ Then we can’t be mad when we don’t receive the paper/ We’ve come too far for our seeds to continue to look back and say/ That’s the way it went.”

This album presents the complete solo works for guitar by two Catalan contemporaries, the cellist Gaspar Cassadó and the pianist Federico Mompou. Cassadó wrote six guitar works connected to his friendship with Andrés Segovia, mostly based on folk elements such as the sardana, a traditional Catalan circle dance. In Mompou’s works for guitar, the influence of his mysticism and attachment to Catalan folklore are undeniable. He composed primarily for piano but he also wrote three pieces for guitar, notably Suite compostelana for Segovia. The hypnotic, austere and lyrical elements in this work distil Mompou’s compositional genius.

In the words of lead singer and lyricist Guy Garvey, ‘AUDIO VERTIGO’ was built from ‘gnarly, seedy grooves created by us playing together in garagey rooms’ and is both more direct and sonically varied by purpose that its predecessor.

The album includes the lead single Lovers’ Leap.

I think it’s safe to say that I have been around a tremendous amount of music and talent in my life. I can’t say that I’ve seen it all, but the true surprises don’t happen that often.

YouTube has been a hotbed for discovery in every genre. You don’t have to look very far to find some pretty amazing young men and women “crushing” it, but, for 99% of the time, on a deeper dive, they come up short. Sure, the fingers are blazing, the tempos are ferocious but, in the end – plain and simple – most simply lack heart. Heart, to me, is the most important ingredient for creating art.

Enter Brandon Goldberg. Heart, heart, heart, along with, of course, his blazing chops and phenomenal instincts. Brandon has this uncanny understanding of exactly what his job is. Sometimes, it’s to play ferociously but, sometimes, it’s to sink his body and soul into just one note. To me, that is what separates Brandon from all of the others.
