Thanks in part to the efforts of conductor Vladimir Lande and the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, featured here, the large orchestral output of Polish-born Russian composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg is getting a second look. During his career he faced many of the same issues Shostakovich did, but his musical solutions to those issues are often different and quite fresh. Like Shostakovich, he went through enforced phases of trying to please Soviet authority, and the two works on this album seem to belong to one of those phases. The Symphony No. 19, Op. 142 (“Bright May”), is the more interesting work. The title refers not to the 1917 May revolution but to the Soviet Union’s final victory over Nazi Germany in May 1945. You might not guess that that was the topic if you listened to the work cold; the extremely variegated first movement mixes triumphant passages in brass with pastoral scenes, as if the composer were surveying a devastated landscape. The movement ends in great uncertainty, and that mood pervades the entire symphony. The work doesn’t have the memorable tunes that Shostakovich offers, but it has a style of its own. The shorter tone poem The Banners of Peace, Op. 143, dates from the same year; it is a more bombastic work whose conclusion, even annotator Richard Whitehouse concedes, is most notable for “its evident lack of irony.” The orchestra, made up of players for whom stuff like this was written, does quite well, and those who have discovered Weinberg along the way will find the music interesting. Those who want to sample this composer, though, might try one of the earlier symphonies released in Naxos’ series devoted to his music.

Although Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee had a stormy, tempestuous relationship at times, they recorded more than their share of great Piedmont blues during their many years as a duo. Terry and McGhee parted company in the mid-’70s, but Walk On finds the two of them reunited on-stage at the Rising Sun Festijazz in Montreal, Quebec on July 22, 1980 (when Terry was 68 and McGhee was 64). And despite all of the well-publicized friction that sometimes existed between them in the ’60s and ’70s, Terry and McGhee don’t sound like they are unhappy to be reunited — not at all. In fact, the two of them enjoy a strong rapport during a six-song set that includes performances of “Good Morning Blues,” “Walk On,” and “I’m Gonna Get on My Feets After a While” (which is a perfect example of why the Terry & McGhee twosome was highly regarded in both blues and folk circles). Walk On isn’t strictly a Terry & McGhee release; while half of the LP is devoted to them, the other half consists of three selections by Lightnin’ Hopkins and three by Louisiana Red (who is in good form on “I’m a King Bee” and “Sweet Home Chicago”). And it is interesting to note the stylistic differences between the artists — you have Piedmont blues from Terry & McGhee, Texas blues from Hopkins, and a Louisiana-meets-Chicago approach from Louisiana Red. Although Walk On falls short of essential, this album still has a lot going for it and is an enjoyable document of the 1980 festival in Montreal. – Alex Henderson

With the “Something Blue” series of releases, my goal is to present a series of focused and concise performances to create maximum enjoyment. For this 2023 release, I specifically focused on assembling a group of talented composers. I selected some familiar collaborators; bassist Boris Kozlov, alto saxophonist Markus Howell and drummer Donald Edwards. I also chose some “new” faces as well; tenor saxophonist Willie Morris, trombonist Altin Sencalar, and pianist Misha Tsiganov. I hope this program of new compositions will encourage a wider audience of listeners to increase their engagement with Jazz, so it becomes their personal preference for musical entertainment. — Marc Free, producer

“Being the Up And Down”, Silke Eberhard’s new CD with her trio with Jan Roder on bass and Kay Lübke on drums was recorded both in the studio as well as at a live concert at the A-Trane in Berlin. This was the result of her winning the prestigious Berlin Jazz Prize, which affords the winner the honor of playing a concert and getting some recording days by Radio Berlin Brandenburg. Thus on this disc you hear a seamless blend of studio and live performances. The artwork on the cover, as on her previous Intakt release The Being Inn, is by Roman Signer, one of the most prestigious Swiss artists of today. The American jazz critic Lynn René Bayley writes in the liner notes: “Yet whether being sensual or being edgy and experimental, there is so much to like and so much to hear in Silke Eberhard’s playing both solo and when interacting with this trio that one is held spellbound from first note to last. Small wonder that she has such a high reputation in the German jazz world!”

For Sia, making an album of original Christmas songs was akin to a having an actual holiday in the recording studio: “I just was having so much fun, because it’s already there – all of the concepts, you just have to expand on them,” the artist said to Rolling Stone in 2017. “It’s not like you have to have an original idea to begin with. It’s like, Christmas, mistletoe, ho-ho-ho, Santa Claus, Christmas list, elves. It was easy and fun. We did it in two weeks.”

Released as part of the Acoustic Sounds Series celebrating 70 years of Contemporary Records, Shelly Manne & Friends’ My Fair Lady is the first album to ever consist of jazz versions of songs from just a single Broadway musical. First released in 1956 and recorded by legendary engineer Roy DuNann, this new edition features remastered audio from the original tapes.

My Fair Lady, recorded by “Shelly Manne & His Friends,” was released in 1956 by Contemporary Records. Shelly Manne and his Friends bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the once and future classical pianist André Previn had recorded a trio album before this one (Shelly Manne and Friends) but My Fair Lady was the first and biggest-selling of the jazz versions of Broadway shows, TV themes, and film soundtracks later recorded by the trio. It remains a true classic to this day. Tracks include “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”
