Tenor Fritz Wunderlich is accompanied by pianist Hubert Giesen on this highly-praised vintage album recorded at the Academy of Music in Munich in 1965. In addition to the titular Schumann work, the programme also includes Lieder by Schubert and Beethoven. Wunderlich was only 35 when he recorded this, less than a year before his tragic accidental death.

“Amongst all the singers I have played with during 50 years, there was only one whom I really loved like a son: Fritz Wunderlich. Our friendship began late and it ended just three and a half years later due to Wunderlich’s sudden death, that, it is no exaggeration to say, shook the whole world of music severely.”

William Byrd’s work stands out above all for the variety of genres and structural principles. This is particularly evident in his unique keyboard music. The influence that Byrd also had on the continental development of piano music remains remarkable. With William Byrd, Friederike Chylek follows up on her last albums “From Byrd To Byrd” and “Time stands still”. Friederike Chylek plays on a copy of the harpsichord by Matthias Griewisch after Ioannes Ruckers, 1624.

Matthew Locke was born 400 years ago in 1622, and while he is often ranked as one of England’s finest composers, he is still unaccountably neglected: his music may not be as immediately appealing as his immediate successor, Henry Purcell, nor as wide- ranging as William Byrd, yet his forceful musical personality and luxuriant technique place him in the first echelon of English composers, with his works described by Richard Boothby of Fretwork as having a “quixotic, capricious restlessness that is constantly challenging the listener to follow his argument … a thrilling musical ride”. Accompanying Fretwork on continuo for this recording are David Miller (archlute and theorbo) and Silas Wollston (harpsichord).

Iconic pianist/composer Fred Hersch was an early adopter of new technologies and new ways forward when the pandemic hit in early 2020. But he’s also been among the most eager to return to live performance and collaboration now that life has begun to resume some semblance of normality. In August 2021 he returned to the studio to record one of his most ambitious projects to date: Breath By Breath, his first album ever pairing jazz rhythm section with string quartet. Breath By Breath draws inspiration from the pianist’s longtime practice of mindfulness meditation, centered on the new eight-movement “Sati Suite.” But while the album is certainly contemplative and lustrous, it’s far from being merely an ambient backdrop for blissful relaxation – the music here is as fully engaged and emotionally rich as any that Hersch has made over the course of his remarkable career.

The conductor Armin Jordan was a preferred musical partner of Frédéric Lodéon as they recorded three albums together: Boccherini’s concertos, Beethoven’s Triple (both already available digitally), and this album of romantic pieces, made available in high resolution for the first time in digital. It includes highlights of the 19th-century repertoire, from Saint-Saëns’ first concerto to the virtuoso Rococo Variations by Tchaikovsky and a lovely orchestral version of Fauré’s Élégie.

The last album of Warner’s retrospective is off the beaten track. It is dedicated to Jean-Louis Duport, nowadays an underrated musician but a true cello-hero back in his time (his own cello, the Duport by Stradivarius, was played by Rostropovich for many years until his death). This album features the only existing version on record of the second concerto, and some rare duets with Xavier Gagnepain.

Fréderick Franssen: From among the enormous choice of horn repertoire available in the early stages of my study of the instrument, my interest was piqued by the very earliest horn music. The music from that era did and still does exert its magic on me due to the pure beauty of its clear and transparent sound world. One of my first finds on this quest of discovery through the Baroque period was a concerto by an unknown hand, which appears on this album and comes from a very special collection – the ‘Wenster’. The library at the University of Lund in Sweden contains one of the largest collections of horn music from the first half of the 18th century, under the name of ‘Wenster’. The manuscript contains 18 works, with virtually all of the composers having some sort of connection to the city of Dresden, and it may have been transcribed by a travelling horn player during a visit to that city. The six works on this recording are all taken from this collection.

Fréderick Franssen (1977) plays the French Horn in the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides the orchestra he performs as a soloist.

Since that time, he has reached international acclaim as a chart-topping, award-winning singer-songwriter. Taking inspiration from early ’80s US hardcore band logos, ‘FTHC’ stands for Frank Turner Hardcore. Deluxe version includes alternative artwork.

Another collection of Sinatra singles and B-sides with backings courtesy of Nelson Riddle, this isn’t an essential collection, but it is an interesting one, showcasing the different standards Sinatra had for singles and albums. The leadoff track, “Hey! Jealous Lover,” was one of Sinatra’s biggest hits of the 1950s. The singer hated it himself and he was right; it may have initially sold a bundle, but it was quickly forgotten while such mid-charting singles as “Witchcraft” and “I’ve Got the World on a String” are still widely heard and enjoyed today. This collection is long out of print, but all of the tracks appear on the Complete Capitol Singles Collection, a superb box set. ~ Nick Dedina

Sinatra Sings Great Songs from Great Britain is one of the oddest albums in Sinatra’s catalog. Recorded in the summer of 1962 and available only in the U.K. for a number of years, the album consists of songs by British composers, performed with British musicians, and recorded in Britain, while Sinatra was on tour. As it happened, Sinatra was tired and worn out during the sessions, and arranger/conductor Robert Farnon had written a set of charts that were ambitious, lush, ornate, and sweeping. Although the arrangements are provocative — occasionally they are more interesting than the actual songs — Sinatra was simply not in good shape for the sessions, which is clear from his thin, straining singing. As such, Great Songs from Great Britain isn’t much more than a curiosity. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
