Captured in concert on September 14, 2019, under the direction and arrangements of Jean-Nicolas Trottier, theOrchestre National de Jazz de Montréal paid tribute to the legendary quintet formed by Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, as well as to the sublime moments that these virtuosos were able to create between 1965 and 1968, particularly engraved on the mythical albums that are ESP, Miles Smiles and Nefertiti. At the head of this quintet, invigorated by the drums of the very young Williams, Davis and his collaborators gradually broke away from established formats to create a new music, exciting in its coherence and freedom.

Washington calls Fearless Movement his dance album. “It’s not literal,” Washington says. “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music—expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.” Dance as an embodied form of expression signals a shift in focus for Washington. Where previous albums dealt with cosmic ideas and existential concepts, Fearless Movement focuses in on the everyday, an exploration of life on earth. This change in scope is due in large part to the birth of Washington’s first child a few years ago. “Being a father means the horizon of your life all of a sudden shows up,” says Washington. “My mortality became more apparent to me, but also my immortality—realizing that my daughter is going to live on and see things that I’m never going to see. I had to become comfortable with this, and that affected the music that I was making.” The album features Washington’s daughter—who wrote the melody to “Asha The First” during some of her first experimentations on the piano—as well as a host of collaborators new and old. André 3000 appears on flute, George Clinton lends his voice, as do BJ The Chicago Kid, Inglewood rapper D-Smoke and Taj and Ras Austin of Coast Contra, the twin sons of West Coast legend Ras Kass. Washington further enlisted lifelong friends and collaborators Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Patrice Quinn, Brandon Coleman, DJ Battlecat and more. The album also features “The Garden Path,” a song Washington performed for the first time ever, making his late-night television debut, on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader born and raised in Los Angeles. His three bodies of work to date—The Epic; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and Heaven and Earth—are among the most acclaimed of this century. As Told To G/D Thyself, his short film companion to Heaven and Earth, debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim. In 2020, Washington scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, earning Emmy and Grammy nominations for his work. Also in 2020, Washington co-founded the supergroup Dinner Party with long-time friends and collaborators Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper and 9th Wonder—their EP Dinner Party (Dessert) was subsequently nominated for a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. In 2021, he contributed a cover of Metallica’s “My Friend of Misery” to the band’s Metallica Blacklist covers project. Washington has toured the world over and collaborated and shared stages with Kendrick Lamar, Florence + the Machine, Herbie Hancock and many more.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 41:01 minutes | 851 MB | Genre: Jazz, Contemporary Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Prophone Records

Following the 2021 release ‘1st Movement’, hailed by Swedish National Radio as one of the best of the year, Adam Forkelid’s latest upcoming work, ‘Turning Point’, offers a contemporary Nordic mirror into the journey of life. The music represents a sonic exploration of life’s inevitable changes that make up each of our personal stories. Written across a month and recorded in a single day, the record showcases a poignant fusion of the piano and guitar – a collaborative interplay central to the record’s identity. His expansive palette of influence includes flavors borrowed from classical composers Satie and Chopin, Brazilian and Cuban rhythms, to Bill Frisell and Chick Corea. Blending the acoustic jazz idiom with hints of electricity and a distinctive Nordic touch infuses the album with soulful, albeit energetic allure self-described as ‘New Nordic Jazz’. From the stark melancholic textures synonymous with the Nordic sound to euphoric highs, Forkelid’s compositions are grounded in jazz’s rich history of songwriting. Marrying lyrical, memorable melodies with deep grooves and high-octane virtuosic improvisations, the composer feels the role of his music is to ‘to move people and give them something relatable, not being specifically forward looking or retrospective, but just to be here and now’.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 57:05 minutes | 628 MB | Genre: Contemporary Jazz, Jazz

After a first album, Take Off, released in 2018 by Jazz Family, the guitarist offers a new trio opus.

Gustave Reichert is a polyinstrumentalist composer with a rich universe, sometimes dreamlike and sometimes rock, a man of the stage whose nonchalant charisma rubs shoulders with raw energy, and takes the spectators on an epic and sensitive journey. Gustave’s passion for certain blowers, among whom we could cite John Coltrane, Lester Young, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson or the contemporary Walter Smith, is perceptible in his playing, where the guitar sound becomes breathy and rounded.

In “Mars”, the guitarist offers a new singular epic, and intoxicates us with his dense and sometimes saturated sounds which evoke a thousand images, like Hans Zimmer’s suite for the film Interstellar. This is no coincidence since music for images has always attracted the jazzman, who has already composed for the cinema. The trio formed with drummer Pierre Alain Tocannier and double bassist Lucas Fattorini gives substance to the fine and sensitive writing of Gustave Reichert, which carries us away and transports us, disturbingly, from one energy to another.

Argentine vocalist Roxana Amed further expands her globally cross-pollinated sound on 2021’s poetically expressive Ontology. A native of Buenos Aires, Amed has lived in Miami since relocating to the United States in 2013. Even prior to her move, she had already built a vibrant discography blending South American musical traditions with pop, rock, and harmonically nuanced post-bop jazz. With Ontology, she pushes her stylistically diverse approach to an even higher level, performing her own lyrical original songs alongside compositions by Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and Alberto Ginastera. Helping her achieve her lush, deeply engaging sound is her ensemble featuring saxophonist Mark Small, pianist Martin Bejerano, bassist Edward Perez, and drummer Ludwig Alfonso. Also adding flavor are a handful of guest collaborators, including guitarists Tim Jago and Aaron Lebos, drummer Rodolfo Zuniga, and bassists Lowell Ringel and Carlo De Rosa. There’s a sculptural quality to much of Amed’s music that’s especially evident on tracks like “Peaceful,” which she sings in languorous harmony with saxophonist Small. Even when she’s singing largely on her own with minimal rubato accompaniment, as on her chamber jazz rendition of Shorter’s impressionistic “Virgo,” Amed’s voice is transfixing, like a classical cellist in meditative rapture. It’s an artful sound, bringing to mind the work of British singer Norma Winstone as well as the equally progressive recordings of guitarist Pat Metheny. While Amed sings in both English and Spanish, she often takes a more instrumental approach, eschewing lyrics on the vibrant bop-meets-tango “Milonga Por La Auscencia” and diving headlong into the propulsive Latin jazz rhythms of Ginestera’s “Danza del Viejo Boyero.” Listening to Ontology is a deeply textured, almost metaphysical experience as Amed deftly pulls together the distinct creative and cultural threads that make up the colorful weft of her artistic identity.

I grew up in Newark, New Jersey where such great artists as James Moody, Sarah Vaughan, Walter Davis Jr., Hank Mobley were my neighbors and Wayne Shorter was my dear friend. Wayne and I went to grammar school and Arts High School together. I was very influenced by Wayne in every way and knew at young age that he was a genius. But I could not tolerate the cold winters, so I decided to move to Los Angeles. It was 1960. In 1961, I received a call from Jules Chaikin, a young contractor that I worked for, who knew my playing and asked if I wanted to go on the road with Stan Kenton. I was overwhelmed since this was one of the bands I dreamed of playing with. Nine months later we ended the tour at Capitol Records. I recorded three albums with the band, including “Adventures in Jazz” which won a Grammy for Stan and “Adventures in Blues” which Stan said was my album since it featured the bass walking predominantly through the whole album.

Analogue Productions’ Blue Note & Nat “King” Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!
“…if you haven’t picked up every 1 of the Blue Note & Nat King Cole reissues from Chad Kassem & company at Acoustic Sounds, you’re really missing out!” – David W. Robinson, Positive Feedback, Issue 52

Hank Mobley was a perfect artist for Blue Note in the 1960s. On this LP, which is a straight reissue of the 1965 session, Mobley is joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw & drummer Billy Higgins (a typically remarkable Blue Note lineup) for the infectious title cut, 3 other lesser-known but superior originals, plus Wayne Shorter’s “Venus Di Mildew.”

AllMusic:
Hank Mobley was a perfect artist for Blue Note in the 1960s. A distinctive but not dominant soloist, Mobley was also a very talented writer whose compositions avoided the predictable yet could often be quite melodic & soulful; his tricky originals consistently inspired the young all-stars in Blue Note’s stable.
