„Criss-Cross“, Thelonious Monk’s second album for Columbia Records, features some of the finest work that Monk ever did in the studio with his ’60s trio and quartet. Criss-Cross is a swing-influenced bop album featuring complex melodies and harmonies, Monk’s unique style of stride piano, and his unique ideas on pitch qualities for his improvisations. The title track, “Criss-Cross,” is one of his more critically acclaimed compositions. For this recording, Monk cut out two bars from the original music in order to speed up the overall feel of the piece. It also features Monk’s highly personal use of rhythmic displacement. “Eronel” is a distinctly bop tune that is fast-paced and showcases Monk’s virtuousic stride-style piano playing. The track “Crepuscule with Nellie” was a piece Monk had written for his wife.

Thelonious Monk fans in particular are advised to search for this valuable two-LP set for it contains a variety of unissued material from the pianist/composer’s six-year period with Columbia. Monk is heard on three piano solos, with his regular working quartet, heading a trio on “Easy Street” and at his renowned Lincoln Center concert with a nonet on “Light Blue” and “Bye Ya.” The music on this two-fer is at the same consistent high level as his Columbia recordings of the 1960s and contains some surprising moments. – Scott Yanow

The year 2017 will see the centenary of the birth of pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. And although his music was written between the 40s and 60s, it continues to fascinate jazzmen of all generations and all aesthetics. Born of this fascination, Always Know Monk is a kaleidoscopic variation of the repertoire of the composer, repertoire passed to the prism of the many interpretations he has aroused, from Bud Powell to Alexander Von Schlippenbach through Steve Lacy and Paul Motian. The compositions are treated like mobiles, which elements move, mingle, transform, and which unity resides in the force of attraction of the “monkisms” which cross them.

“35 Essentials Of Thelonious Monk” is a collection recordings of John Coltrane compiles from the archives of Bibliothèque nationale de France…

The BnF’s audio collection, with over a million audio documents, is one of the oldest and most important ones in the world. Born in 1911 as the Archives de la parole (Archives of the spoken word), it was fortunate enough to be the recipient of donations from contemporary phonographic companies. In 1938, with the institution of legal deposit for phonograms, these contributions became systematic; to this very day, they constitute the collection’s main growth vector, forming a one-of-a-kind national heritage. This legal deposit is further complemented by donations and acquisitions.

Despite the title, the two artists do not perform together on the LP, and they are represented on each side by separate live appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival.

On the first side of the LP was a series of high tempo performances of bebop tunes and other staples of the Davis live repertoire from 1958. The performance was contemporaneous with Davis’ Milestones album. Aside from the 1973 release Jazz at the Plaza (also a 1958 concert) during the LP era, this was the only legitimate (non-bootleg) recording of a live Davis combo performance earlier than the 1960 Blackhawk recordings. As such, this performance and Jazz at the Plaza were the only legitimate live recordings representing the Kind of Blue sextet. On the second side were a few numbers by Thelonious Monk’s combo, from a 1963 Newport appearance. It featured an idiosyncratic appearance by clarinetist Pee Wee Russell. The Miles set was recorded in mono and the Monk set was recorded in stereo, so the mono LP featured a fold-down of the Monk set and the stereo LP featured an electronically re-channeled for stereo remix of the Miles set.

Seldom does a “cash in” turn into a “classic,” but in the case of this 1961 album of outtakes and leftovers by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane recorded four years prior, that’s exactly what happened. Monk and Coltrane only played together briefly, during the last half of 1957 when Monk’s quartet was in transition and Coltrane himself was juggling a busy solo recording schedule after being booted from Miles’ first great quintet due to his heroin addiction. While Coltrane may have been struggling a bit at the time, Monk was at the height of his powers; over the course of 1957 the pianist would record and release four albums, at least two of which—Monk’s Music and Brilliant Corners—are classics. Of those four, Coltrane was only featured prominently Monk’s Music (his playing on the otherwise solo Thelonious Himself was limited to a single cut), the only album for which they had an official recording session.

In May of 1957, Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers went into the studio with Thelonious Monk to record a one-off album for Atlantic. The Jazz Messengers were a loose collective of young Jazz musicians, with a constantly rotating lineup to keep the music fresh and help launch new careers. In this iteration we find Art Blakey on drums, Thelonious Monk on piano, Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Bill Hardman on trumpet and Spanky DeBrest on bass. -Blakey had recorded with Monk on various occasions, but this was the first time Monk sat in with the Jazz Messengers. This also marks Thelonious Monk’s only appearance on Atlantic Records. The result is a true meeting of the minds, a beautiful union of Monk’s melodies with Blakey’s unshakable sense of swing. This 65thAnniversary deluxe edition includes an extra disc ofunreleased outtakes, celebrating the most sensational jazz collaboration of the 1950s.

Hot on the heels of Impulse’s recently unearthed Coltrane number one hit album comes another beauty from Jazz’s ‘Holy Trinity’. This is a previously unreleased, precious lost treasure from Monk’s most critically acclaimed line-up; Charlie Rouse on saxophone, John Ore on double bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. The music was recorded live in Copenhagen in 1963 at the peak of Monk’s career. A year later he was to feature on the cover of TIME magazine, one of only for 4 Jazz artists ever to do so.

MAST’s Thelonious Sphere Monk is a cosmic journey reinterpreting the great Thelonious Monk Song Book in celebration of his 100th birthday. MAST tackles sixteen Monk compositions, including the acclaimed “Round Midnight,” “Blue Monk,” “Straight No Chaser,” “Epistrophy” and “Well You Needn’t.” As well as more obscure titles like “Misterioso,” “Pannonica,” “Friday The 13th” and “Bemsha Swing.” MAST, aka Tim Conley, pays homage to the significant history of Thelonious Monk and his esteemed compositions while bringing them into the future using modern electronic bleeps, bloops, and beats. This is done in concert with the Low End Theory, Los Angeles beat culture Conley is a part of. Harmonious with the mystical and metaphysical hand painted cover art by Japanese artist Tokio Aoyama, each track created is a unique world unto itself and the listener travels from one musical planet to the next on the spaceship Monk.
