Another Country is Rod Stewart’s brand new studio album via Capitol Records. One of rock’s most gifted storytellers is back to continue the story he began with 2013’s Time.

“I’ve found that the only way to write songs is to be as personal and honest as possible, And when my last album was so well-received it gave me the confidence to keep on writing, and to examine and write about different things. It also gave me the freedom to experiment with different sounds like reggae, ska and Celtic melodies,” says Stewart. (more…)

Medtner’s 14 piano sonatas, the most significant achievement in this genre by any major composer since Beethoven, span his career. The Sonata-Ballade explores a tempestuous musical allegory – the triumph of Light over Darkness, of Faith over Doubt; while the Sonata in A minor is cast in a single, terse movement, with folkloric elements and frequent use of bell-like features that exude Russianness. By contrast, the ‘Night Wind’ Sonata is a monumental epic of exceptional complexity that stunned Rachmaninov and led composer and critic Sorabji to call it ‘the greatest piano sonata of modern times.’

This release comes from one of the hardest-working and most respected pianists in the world today- Stewart Goodyear. Every album from Goodyear is released to widespread critical acclaim, and this one is sure to be no different. Goodyear writes of this release: “It was the year Glenn Gould died when I first heard his legendary name. It was his Bach that introduced me to his playing. His sound struck me immediately… a sound that was compelling and uncompromising. It was not designed to speak words of mere prettiness, but of an individual truth… My decision to record Glenn Gould’s program came right after performing it in Montreal. While playing homage to one of the great Canadian legends, I was being transported to childhood memories of growing up in Toronto, Gould’s home town, studying at the Royal Conservatory, Gould’s home alma mater, and being an artist from Canada, Gould’s country.” “A phenomenon.” (Los Angeles Times) “One of the best pianists of his generation.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

“Just give me many chances…time to learn to crawl,” sings Rickie Lee Jones on this, her fifth album of new material in 14 years. Clearly, she’s had a lot of chances already, and some have paid off big. Here, however, Jones has made a record of what sound like rough performances of musical ideas that might at some point become songs and then, with some work, acceptable recordings. As it is, the record is vague and unfocused, only aspiring to coherence when someone other than Jones is heard from, such as the two songs co-written by Leo Kottke. Too much of the time, Jones sounds like she’s singing half-forgotten songs, and the result is wispy and fragmentary.

Zelmira was the last opera Rossini wrote for Naples, knowing it would also be his calling card to Vienna where he had been assured performances. Keen to reconcile the alleged incompatibility between ‘Italian’ melody and ‘German’ harmony, Rossini employed exciting and daring harmonies and a raft of dazzling orchestral effects in this tragedy in which a daughter saves her father, the king, and her son, from usurpers to the throne. The opera was acclaimed wherever it was heard, and this recording presents the revised and triumphant Paris version.

Discovering this album was a serendipity because I was digging into the works of pianist Phineas Newborn, Jr. when I stumbled across it. Stewart’s voice – to me – is incredible. While there are no sound samples on this page at the time of this review you can listen to them on a double album set’s product page at Love Moods – Good Gravy . If you are new to Stewart’s vocals be prepared to be delighted.

A pair of hits – “Year of the Cat” and “Time Passages,” arriving two years apart during the late 1970s – defined Al Stewart as a louche soft rock troubadour for millions of listeners. While that description is not inaccurate – Stewart had a fondness for lush studio production – it doesn’t encompass everything the Scottish singer/songwriter accomplished during his lengthy career. Initially part of the British folk underground of the ’60s, Stewart didn’t shy away from controversy in his early years, becoming notorious for singing “f***ing” on his 1969 album Love Chronicles. As the ’70s unfurled, Stewart’s eccentricities became opulent, leading him to the smooth, elegant sounds of 1976’s Year of the Cat and 1978’s Time Passages, a pair of albums whose title tracks became his signatures. Once the soft rock era came to a close, ushered into the history books by the rise of MTV, Stewart continued to write, record, and tour with regularity, crafting concept albums dedicated to the cold war and wine – a sign of his enduringly erudite interests.

Otis Redding – Otis Blue (1965) [Analogue Productions 2016] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Otis Redding – Otis Blue (1965) [Analogue Productions 2016]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 >1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Full Scans 300dpi | 1.35 GB
FLAC tracks 2.0 24bit/88.2 kHz | Full Scans 300dpi | 631 MB
Genre: Soul, Funk

Otis Redding’s third album, and his first fully realized album, presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear, and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding’s versions of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December, and all three are worth owning and hearing. Two of them, “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Shake,” are every bit as essential as any soul recordings ever made, and while they (and much of this album) have reappeared on several anthologies, it’s useful to hear the songs from those sessions juxtaposed with each other, and with “Wonderful World,” which is seldom compiled elsewhere. Also featured are Redding’s spellbinding renditions of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (a song epitomizing the fully formed Stax/Volt sound and which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards originally wrote in tribute to and imitation of Redding’s style), “My Girl,” and “You Don’t Miss Your Water.” “Respect” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” two originals that were to loom large in his career, are here as well; the former became vastly popular in the hands of Aretha Franklin and the latter was an instant soul classic. Among the seldom-cited jewels here is a rendition of B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby” that has the singer sharing the spotlight with Steve Cropper, his playing alternately elegant and fiery, with Wayne Jackson and Gene “Bowlegs” Miller’s trumpets and Andrew Love’s and Floyd Newman’s saxes providing the backing. Redding’s powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

Al Stewart’s third album wasn’t much different from the territory he had claimed, with reasonable success, on his prior effort, Love Chronicles. Narrative tales of romance and experience, sometimes third-person and sometimes autobiographical, set the mood, complemented by mild folk-rock arrangements and Stewart’s warm yet bemused voice. A few placid folk guitar instrumentals break up the involved, lengthy vocal tracks. The best cut is “Electric Los Angeles Sunset,” which puts Stewart’s eye for locale-based storytelling to more forceful use than it had ever been previously heard, detailing the grim side of the city rather than its glamorous one. “Manuscript” was also an important work in its focus upon past history and its effects on various characters, an approach that would within a few years become prevalent in Stewart’s work. Trevor Lucas and Gerry Conway of Fotheringay were among the backup players. Richie Unterberger, Allmusic.

It’s not so much that Ron Sexsmith is underrated as just under-discovered. Although the Canadian singer-songwriter has duetted with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, won a Juno award, been produced by Steve Earle and Mitchell Froom, and been covered by Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and Rod Stewart, he’s never really broken through in the US in the way he should have. But if you know you know—and if you don’t, it’s not too late to dive into Sexsmith’s 35-year catalog; The Vivian Line, his 18th album, is a great place to start. Picking up on a running theme in his career, there are clear nods to Ray Davies’ more sentimental, tender moments (“Flower Boxes,” the jaunty “Ever Wonder”) as well as The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society: “Country Mile” evokes that Britpop touchstone with a knowingly twee melody and strings-forward instrumentation, as well as the idea of pastoral beauty being a trap. “We could sit on the fence until the cows come home/ But life’s just passing by/ Doing our scarecrow dance beneath the great unknown/ All I’m asking is why,” Sexsmith croons. “A Barn Conversion,” meanwhile, is a smirking, jugband-ish lark about gentlemen farmers. Each honk and thump is crystalline; indeed, on the whole record, the mix is delightfully crisp. “What I Had in Mind” gently jangles as Sexsmith reckons with happily pursuing an artistic life when society expects conformity. (“Could never fall in line/ With the slave all day/ For minimum pay design.”) Its sweet-sounding companion, “Outdated and Antiquated” also marches to the beat of its own drum, with Sexsmith accepting how he “can’t seem to go with the flow, it don’t make sense/ I don’t fit in…But I’m relevant to myself.” “This, That, And the Other Thing” stands out with world-beat breeziness. “Place Called Love” is stripped-down chamber pop. “Diamond Wave” is upbeat, optimistic (“The sun was hiding under heavy cloud … but any doubts and second thoughts are gone”) and a little bit Jackson Browne. It all adds up to a pretty nice way to spend an afternoon. – Shelly Ridenour
