Leclair’s contribution to music history cannot be overstated. His innovation as a composer revolutionized the French school of violin playing and his playing helped to raise the standard of play- ing in France immeasurably. By weaving together elements of Italian and French music, he created an entirely new compositional style. His duos influenced later composers such as Mozart, de Beriot, Viotti, and closer to our own time, Bartok and Berio.

Greg Ewer and Adam Lamotte currently hail from the Pacific Northwest. Greg is well known to audiences for his regular appearances with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Third Angle New Music Ensemble and Pink Martini. He is also the founder and artistic director of 45th Parallel. He holds faculty positions at Reed College and Lewis & Clark College.

Adam Lamotte has appeared as soloist, concertmaster, and conductor of numerous orchestras throughout the country, including the Northwest Sinfonietta in Seattle, String Orchestra of the Rockies, Astoria Festival Orchestra, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and the Maggini String Orchestra in Houston. He is the founder of The Orchestra, a conductorless ensemble which creates “tapestry” programs, combining drastically different pieces into a single concert experience. His is the Artistic Director of the Montana Baroque Festival.

Performed on period instruments, the album is sure to be a perfect addition to the collections of audiophiles, early music lovers, and violin lovers.

Less than a century ago it was still very common that great violinists like Heifetz, Kreisler, Menuhin etc. played virtuosic pieces in their concerts, very often also their own transcriptions. Nowadays these pieces are unfortunately rarely played in concert halls, sometimes with the reason that this kind of repertoire is “not serious enough”, which I find is really a pity and also not true. Usually violinists study this repertoire at a young age to expand their technical ability on the instrument but afterwards, they tend to focus more on Concertos and Sonatas. I have to admit that the last time I myself played this repertoire was before I was even a teenager, and I had almost forgotten about it.

However, every time I work together with Larry Foster, he is full of stories about Jasha Heifetz from their time together in the 1960s and it is like being taken to another world. Then suddenly the idea came to us; why not make a recording full of these pieces like in the “old days”?

French violinist Renaud Capuçon enjoys international renown as a soloist and chamber musician, is artistic director of several festivals, and is also known for his commitment to promoting and supporting younger artists and for commissioning compositions. Now he signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon and the first album on the yellow label is not long in coming: a duo album with three of the most beautiful sonatas for violin and piano – accompanied by pianist Martha Argerich. The two are now a seasoned duo and have been playing on the stages of international festivals and concert halls for 20 years.

The concert heard here was recorded live in April 2022 at the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence. It was dedicated to American pianist Nicholas Angelich, a friend and colleague who had died just days before. The program includes three major works for violin and piano: Schumann’s Sonata No. 1, Op. 105, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 9, Op. 47 (“Kreutzer”), and Franck’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major

“It’s a real live recording,” Capuçon says, “you rarely get something like this in the studio. Of course, it’s an honor for me to play these pieces with Martha, but at the same time it feels natural. She coaxes things out of me like no one else.”

“Jackie’s musical gift, cellistic prowess and personality were so inseparable that it made her probably one of the most unique musical personalities ever to perform on the stage,” says the great violinist Itzhak Perlman, who knew Jacqueline du Pré well. “Her ability to communicate her art to her audience was uncanny. Besides her flawless and effortless technique, her command of an enormous array of colours was quite phenomenal.” Perlman’s words are borne out by this recital of popular works, in which du Pré’s partners include guitarist John Williams and pianist Gerald Moore.

Classic Yo-Yo is a greatest-hits collection for the famous Yo-Yo Ma, something he’s fully entitled to after two decades of runaway success. It’s “Classic Yo-Yo” in the sense that it presents well-loved and presumably durable selections from a variety of Yo-Yo Ma albums, not because it inclines toward Ma’s straight-ahead classical recordings. In fact the division between classical and crossover pieces on the disc is about 50/50, and they tend to alternate. The transition from Bach to Astor Piazzolla works OK, but that from Appalachian Journey mastermind Edgar Meyer to Brahms might be a bit jarring. A greatest-hits album is a tough item for Ma because his recordings are so different from one another and involve such a variety of other musicians. As Ma himself says in an interview included in the liner material, “Collaboration is the best part of what I do, it’s what I enjoy most about being a musician”.

André Previn, the stunning conductor, great pianist and remarkable composer, has just passed away, on 28 February. “A Brilliant musician and gifted composer whose talents were endless” in the words of Itzhak Perlman, he left an extensive and versatile discography dominated by his evergreen interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev ballets, his recording of Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue, one of the true great recordings of the last century, and his stellar collaborations with Itzhak Perlman.

In this recording, we hear him both play the piano solo part and conduct in two iconic concertos by Mozart, alongside Radu Lupu in the Double Concerto. It has been especially remastered in 24-bit/96kHz from original tapes.

In the very early days of Fanfare, one critic dismissed Heifetz as a relic, soon to be ignored. Of course that’s turned out to be utterly false; the Heifetz blend of fire and ice has been tremendously influential since then, and the somewhat more romantic elements of his playing are coming back into vogue (not that, in his maturity, Heifetz was given to romantic extremes). Just think about Itzhak Perlman, whose entire career has been an effort to play like Heifetz (to the extent of appropriating the more oddball elements of his repertoire) while being loved like Kreisler. Heifetz retired 35 years ago, but his style is still very much with us. So are his recordings.
