It’s not so much that Ron Sexsmith is underrated as just under-discovered. Although the Canadian singer-songwriter has duetted with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, won a Juno award, been produced by Steve Earle and Mitchell Froom, and been covered by Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and Rod Stewart, he’s never really broken through in the US in the way he should have. But if you know you know—and if you don’t, it’s not too late to dive into Sexsmith’s 35-year catalog; The Vivian Line, his 18th album, is a great place to start. Picking up on a running theme in his career, there are clear nods to Ray Davies’ more sentimental, tender moments (“Flower Boxes,” the jaunty “Ever Wonder”) as well as The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society: “Country Mile” evokes that Britpop touchstone with a knowingly twee melody and strings-forward instrumentation, as well as the idea of pastoral beauty being a trap. “We could sit on the fence until the cows come home/ But life’s just passing by/ Doing our scarecrow dance beneath the great unknown/ All I’m asking is why,” Sexsmith croons. “A Barn Conversion,” meanwhile, is a smirking, jugband-ish lark about gentlemen farmers. Each honk and thump is crystalline; indeed, on the whole record, the mix is delightfully crisp. “What I Had in Mind” gently jangles as Sexsmith reckons with happily pursuing an artistic life when society expects conformity. (“Could never fall in line/ With the slave all day/ For minimum pay design.”) Its sweet-sounding companion, “Outdated and Antiquated” also marches to the beat of its own drum, with Sexsmith accepting how he “can’t seem to go with the flow, it don’t make sense/ I don’t fit in…But I’m relevant to myself.” “This, That, And the Other Thing” stands out with world-beat breeziness. “Place Called Love” is stripped-down chamber pop. “Diamond Wave” is upbeat, optimistic (“The sun was hiding under heavy cloud … but any doubts and second thoughts are gone”) and a little bit Jackson Browne. It all adds up to a pretty nice way to spend an afternoon. – Shelly Ridenour

Show creator David Chase, director Martin Bruestle, and executive producer Brad Grey are credited with this rich, cross-genre, multigenerational collection, but they tellingly thank a few score others. The contributions from usual suspect vets like Frank Sinatra, Dylan, Elvis Costello, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, the Kinks, Keith Richards (and the Stones), the Pretenders, and Ben E. King contain more than their fair share of musical and contextual surprises. But the collection’s true appeal lies in its artistically oblique corners, which somehow embrace alt-rock (R&B tinged and straight up, courtesy of Pigeonhed and Cake, respectively), nouveau Aussie country (Kasey Chambers), traditional gospel and swampy blues (the Campbell Brothers with Katie Jackson, R.L. Burnside), Vivaldi (Cecilia Di Bartoli), and contemporary Neopolitan pop (Madreblu, Lorenzo Jovanotti). Even budding star Uncle Junior chimes in, with Dominic “Goldenthroat” Chianese lending a spare, heartfelt rendition of the traditional “Core’ngrato”; hang onto your kneecaps, ‘N Sync!

True innovators of the punk era, the Specialsbegan the British ska revival craze, combining the highly danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk’s energy and attitude, and taking on a more focused and informed political and social stance than their predecessors and peers.

Their agenda of racial harmony and social inclusion was pursued through their music, and came to be described as the Two Tone movement. Identified also by their distinctive look, the band woremod-style 1960s period”rude boy”outfits (pork pie hats, tonic andmohairsuits, and loafers) that were adopted by fans and musical followers alike.

The New Basement Tapes – Lost On The River (2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:13:43 minutes | 1,57 GB | Genre: Rock

Produced by T Bone Burnett, Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes was written and performed in creative collaboration by Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford. The artists and Burnett gathered in Capitol Studios in March to write and create music for a treasure trove of recently discovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes.

The album will be released this year by Electromagnetic Recordings/Harvest Records (Capitol Music Group), and will be accompanied by a Showtime documentary titled, Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, directed by Sam Jones (the Wilco documentary, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart). The film will present an exclusive and intimate look at the making of Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes set against the important and historical cultural backdrop of Bob Dylan’s original Basement Tapes.

Bob Dylan’s original Basement Tapes – recorded by Dylan in 1967 with musicians who would later achieve their own fame as The Band – have fascinated and enticed successive generations of musicians, fans and cultural critics for nearly five decades. This collective recorded more than a hundred songs in the basement of a small house in upstate New York that summer and fall, including dozens of newly-written Bob Dylan future classics such as, “I Shall Be Released,” “The Mighty Quinn,” “This Wheel’s On Fire,” “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” and “Tears Of Rage.”

Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes celebrates the discovery of new Bob Dylan lyrics from that noted 1967 period and marks a unique creative opportunity for Burnett, Costello, Giddens, Goldsmith, James and Mumford, who are bringing them to life nearly 50 years later. For Burnett, whom Dylan has entrusted with this endeavor, it was imperative to provide an environment in which these artists could thrive. “Great music is best created when a community of artists gets together for the common good. There is a deep well of generosity and support in the room at all times, and that reflects the tremendous generosity shown by Bob in sharing these lyrics with us.”

Rock icons Deborah Harry and Elvis Costello join NYC avant garde collaboration The Jazz Passengers for a perfectly matched ‘97 album. The Passengers’ always entertaining grooves pair with Harry and Costello’s unmistakable vocal textures for exquisite originals and fresh takes on jazz standards, including the can’t-miss duet “Doncha Go ‘Way Mad”! Of course the vocalists get all the ink, but this is Roy Nathanson (sax) and Curtis Fowlkes’ (trombone) band including a stellar crew of jazzmen, Bill Ware (vibes), E. J. Rodriguez (drums), Brad Jones (bass), and Sam Bardfeld (violin). The featured guitarist is the unheralded icon Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, John Zorn, Tricky, Harry Shearer, Beck, etc.), what an embarrassment of riches!

Swiss vocal acrobat Andreas Schaerer and Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima have some things in common. As artists, each is essentially in a category completely of his own. Both are musicians who can always conjure something special from their chosen instruments. Both are known on the international jazz scene for the completely distinctive and original ways their music constantly crosses genres. Both have played together for several years in the quartet ‘A Novel Of Anomaly’. And now they have recorded a first album together in which the focus is on the two of them. However, for this “evolution” (as the album title has it), they have also involved – and drawn inspiration from – a musician whom they both admire, Tim Lefebvre. The American bassist has worked with many pop and jazz stars, notably Sting, Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Mark Guiliana, Wayne Krantz…Lefebvre’s involvement in the Michael Wollny Trio’s breakthrough was, incidentally, anything but tangential. In other words, his playing is at home in practically every context.

When Heartbeat City was released in March 1984, the Cars were already the proud owners of a few platinum-selling albums thanks to a rather original musical identity for their time. Acting as the missing link between the Ramones and Elvis Costello with a touch of Roxy Music, Ric Ocasek & Co. provided an ode to pop-punk music from their very first album in 1978. A sort of new wave made in America respectful of the rock’n’roll of yesteryear… The year 1984 also marked the birth of a new TV channel that would revolutionise pop and rock music by becoming an eminently influential media for music videos. The Cars were savvy enough to jump on this video bandwagon and their fifth album was strongly supported by MTV that played You Might Think and Magic on repeat, their two hit anthems that reached the top of rock charts. Undeniably talented for melodies that hit the spot and catchy choruses (their ballad Drive is a formidably languid slow), Ocasek once again releases a beautiful bubble-gum soundtrack of 1980s America.

Holland is the 19th studio album by the American rock group The Beach Boys, released in January 1973. It peaked at number 36 in the US and number 20 in the UK. At the end of the 1973, Rolling Stone named Holland as one of their picks for “album of the year”. In 2000, Elvis Costello ranked the album as one of his favorite records of all time. Holland included a bonus EP, Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale), a musical fairy tale written by Brian Wilson about a magical transistor radio who appears to a young prince.
