1969 album from a certified blues master. Well, actually, we didn’t ask to see his certificate of mastery, but we respect Freddie King enough to know that he wouldn’t release an album entitled Freddie King is a Blues Master if he couldn’t back it up that kind of bold claim. Also, in case this piece happens to be your introduction to the album in question, allow us to assure you that we’ve heard it, and there’s definitely no case of false advertising in play with this album.

On “Three Or One”, Bach appears in transfigured light. Fred Thomas’ ECM New Series debut presents organ chorale preludes, vocal cantata movements and orchestral sinfonias – 24 pieces in all – transcribed for trio and solo piano by the British pianist himself. Throughout, Bach’s idiom is thoughtfully explored by three innovative players – a process Thomas describes as “quietly joyful” – and the trio pieces, primarily drawn from Bach’s Orgelbüchlein, acquire a fresh character in the hands of Thomas, violinist Aisha Orazbayeva and cellist Lucy Railton.

Through the careful and delicate music of his first album “Moon River”, Fred Pasqua demonstrates his attachment to the pieces that accompanied his life as an artist. Surrounded by musicians with whom he has already shared musical adventures, the drummer develops a very personal, sensitive and nuanced music whose aesthetic is similar to a light and delicate poetry in line with the image of Laeticia Bourgeois’s photo.

The discreet media exposure of Fred Pasqua hides a very active musical career. Indeed, the drummer multiplies meetings and collaborations on the French territory and well beyond. Present with Yoann Loustalot, in the trio Aerophone, associated with Elina Duni in his quintet Aksham, member of the quartet Lucky Dog, he also works with guitarists Romain Pilon and Simon Martineau, with Walter Smith III and Ben Wendel, Seamus Blake without forget French pianists and keyboardists Tony Paeleman and Pierre de Bethmann and many other musicians including Louis Winsberg, Emmanuel Beix, Benita Michel, Santi Debriano, Kirk Lightsey …

Like its leader, “Moon River” puts more on the expression of the collective than on that of egos. For the recording Fred Pasqua varied the orchestrations. Seven titles are recorded in a quartet, with guitarist Nelson Veras, trumpet player Yoann Loustalot and bassist Yoni Zelnik at his side. Fred Pasqua also invites Laurent Coq (piano), Jean-Luc Di Fraya (vocals), Adrien Sanchez (saxophone) and Robin Nicaise (saxophone) for other pieces engraved solo, trio, quartet without guitar, quintet or sextet.

In suppleness and nuance, the sun drums and the felted guitar dispense expressive rhythms and luminous harmonies. The poetic and sometimes lyrical lines of the bugle draw delicate tracery that crosses the soft, discreet but solid curves of the double bass.

–  Max Dembo

Mastertone Studios, NYC, 1965…Amidst mounting friction with producer Paul Rothchild, Fred Neil walks out on the unfinished sessions for what was to be his debut album, “Bleecker & MacDougal”. Fearing he wouldn’t return to the studio, his friend and guitar player, Peter Childs, invited him down to the Greenwich Village apartment he shared with John Sebastian, at 38 MacDougal. According to Childs, “the best chance to get Freddie back wouldn’t be to try to persuade him verbally, but to get him over to the apartment for a bit of music-making”. What transpired on that afternoon was a legendary singer-songwriter and his long-time accompanist making music for the pure joy of it, a one-of-a-kind private performance, captured on Ampex reel to reel, and stored for over fifty years!

An acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Fred Hersch is a supremely gifted soloist with a sophisticated, yet unself-conscious approach to playing standards and his own original compositions. As a teacher, he counts both Brad Mehldau and the Bad Plus’ Ethan Iverson as former students. As a player, his nuanced style, influenced by such giants as Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson, has garnered him multiple Grammy nominations, and made him a benchmark for modern jazz. Openly gay and diagnosed HIV-positive at age 30, Hersch is a vocal proponent for gay rights and AIDS research and education.

Jay Clayton has been a leader in applying avant-garde, creative modern techniques to the art of jazz vocal. She has been successful in this commendable objective ever since her first album as a solist in 1980, where a 25-year-old Jane Ira Bloom was a major partner. Although working with a play list of classic standards, except for Wayne Shorter’s jazz standard “Footprints,” Clayton has by no means set aside her modern jazz vocal leanings. Joined by Fred Hersch a pianist with like perspectives, they work in tandem to present this familiar music in an offbeat non-familiar way. This is not to say that lovely melody lines are lost among cacophonies of grunts, groans, and other extra terrestrial events. The lyrical lines are there, but the tempo, the phrasing, the emphasis has been rearranged so the light of these tunes is refracted through a prism rather than through a window of ordinary glass. Full fledged avant-garde comes, as one would expect, on Shorter’s “Footprints,” where Clayton engages in wordless vocalizing reminiscent of the vocal part in Hector Villa-Lobas “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5,” with Hersch doing a marvelous job replacing the cellos as the voice accompaniment. This is seven minutes of remarkable virtuosity. “Regular” standards, such as “Blame It on My Youth,” are treated with respect as Clayton plays little games with the melody line and chordal structure and inserts wordless vocalizing here and there. “Beautiful Love” is introduced slowly by Clayton a cappella before moving into a medium lilting tempo. Not much here ever gets beyond that pace. This album is thoughtful and is for those who want to hear the full measure of a song, with nothing skipped, casually dismissed, or unknowingly overlooked.

Less noisy than Keith Jarrett and less famous than Brad Mehldau (who was his pupil, after all), Fred Hersch is a “jazz” pianist who is all the same very precious: a musician whose every album holds gems of improvisation, and moments of grace. His works have become all the more intense of the the last few years, as they have found themselves shoved into the spotlight of the life of a committed artist. In 2008, this life was almost brought to a premature end. Having contracted AIDS, Hersch spent two months in a coma from which he emerged miraculously. There followed long weeks in which he re-learned the piano, and then, years later, he wrote a piece, My Coma Dreams, on the porous border between dream and reality. Several other albums followed. Playing solo, in a trio, in a duet… this album, brought out in September 2017, is a totally solo work. This is his eleventh solo work, that mixes his own music with works by others (Whisper Not by Benny Golson, Eronel by Monk, Zingaro by Antonip Carlos Jobim and even, more surprising, And So It Goes by Billy Joel!). Those who know Fred Hersch are hardly surprised by the intelligence of his jazz. Nor by his faculty for turning so many phrases of such beauty. Those who don’t can take a look in this Open Book, and get their herschian education started as soon as possible…
