Chaos & Colour, the energetic and triumphant 25th studio album from British hard rock legends and progenators Uriah Heep, bristles with explosive classic rock guitars, supreme harmonies, and Heep’s famously generous keyboard foundation. Led by founding member Mick Box, it is no surprise that themes of light, love and, ultimately, positivity are constant through the eleven tracks. An entire epic in musical form, from a jagged march at the start to a slow hymn to love as the finale. Between them, two lightweight scherzi and two choral movements with words from Nietzsche’s «Also sprach Zarathustra» and the folk song collection «Des Knaben Wunderhorn»: Gustav Mahler’s «Third» is among the most spectacular and expansive symphonies of them all, and it gives voice to heaven and earth. A work of this scope takes up a whole concert, and the Tonkunstler Orchestra and its Music Director Yutaka Sado devoted an evening to it in November 2021 in the Wiener Musikverein – with the exquisite voices of Kate Lindsey, the Vienna Boys Choir and the Wiener Singverein. As a Viennese orchestra with a musical tradition dating back over a century, the Tonkunstler Orchestra plays, like the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, on Viennese instruments. Gustav Mahler’s life story was also closely associated with Vienna. He conducted the city’s first performance of his own Third Symphony – albeit a good two years after the world premiere in Krefeld in 1902.

ATUM is a rock opera presented in three acts by inimitable American rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. The album tells an epic interplanetary story set in the not-too-distant future, though the songs themselves respectively stand on their own in the Pumpkins pantheon. This is the final instalment in a concept album trilogy, which began with 1995’s Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness and then continued with 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God. The album features three original members of the band—William Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin—as well as long-time guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Corgan had been developing the idea for the rock opera for years, and the pandemic gave him the time off the road to meticulously complete it in the grandiose way he had intended.

It includes all seven songs performed in their original order. The song arrangements have developed over decades of touring and now the listener can hear these re-envisioned versions.

The Gibson Brothers have had their greatest success in the world of bluegrass, but their talent knows no bounds – Songwriting is at the core of who they are, and on “Darkest Hour” they deliver 12 tracks that they either wrote or co-wrote, with those 12 songs whittled down by producer Jerry Douglas from a pile of songs the guys sent him. The majority of this album was recorded with a standard bluegrass configuration, but a few of the tracks have lap steel, percussion, and electric guitar masterfully blended together by Jerry. They began work on this album just before the world shut down in March 2020. They were able to record six tracks in those sessions, it took well over a year before they gathered again to complete the album. If there is any upside to the delay, it would be that the downtime gave them a chance to write a few new tunes that made it into the second round of recording. This album has it all–great songs, unmatched vocals, and incredible musicians.

A really wonderful album from the height of the exotica years – but a set that’s got a fair bit more jazz in the mix than most from that generation too! Gene Rains plays vibes – and moves between moodier moments, ala Martin Denny/Arthur Lyman, and more straightforward jazz styles – which often have some great modal elements in the mix! The Rains group played hotels in Hawaii during the late 50s and early 60s – but are maybe more like a Pacific take on territory of the Quartette Tres Bien, thanks to strong work from Allen Watanabe on drums, Archie Grant on bass, and Byron Peterson on piano. Titles include “Mapuana”, “Bancock Cock Fight”, “Tiki”, “Off Shore”, “Shadow Of Love”, “Jasmine & Jade”, and “Lonely Winter”

Eight years after their debut album, The Arcs present their second long player with “Electrophonic Chronic”.
For independent newcomer bands such a long break directly after the first sign of life would probably be unfortunate to deadly. But The Arcs are not a “regular” new band, but consist of The Black Keys band boss Dan Auerbach and various protagonists of the retro-soul scene around the New York label Daptone Records.
Together they already made highly pleasing psych-pop with elements of garage rock and 60s soul on “Yours, Dreamily”. Thanks to Dan Auerbach’s voice and his production not too far away from his main band. Just thanks to broader instrumentation even more varied in the sound picture.
This has not changed on “Electrophonic Chronic”, which is not surprising, since all songs and recordings come from the same extensive sessions from 2015. It pays off when three of five band members run their own studio and together you can record every idea professionally for eternity.

The composer Mieczysław Weinberg was born in Poland but spent most of his life in the Soviet Union, where he was actively supported by Shostakovich. His rediscovery is still in full swing. As recently as 2015, violinist Linus Roth founded the International Mieczysław Weinberg Society together with conductor Michael Sanderling. The violinist Gidon Kremer has increasingly been playing pieces by Weinberg in recent years. Now the Venetian violinist Stefano Zanchetta, who studied with Sándor Végh and the Quartetto Italiano, among others, presents a new recording of the three sonatas for solo violin.
