More than most musicians working in the 21st century, Gary Clark, Jr. is dedicated to the live album. He released Live two years after his 2012 major-label debut, Blak and Blu, and Live North America 2016 arrives on a similar schedule, appearing in 2017 after the release of 2015’s The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. Clark worked his second major-label album throughout 2016, so it’s little surprise that a good chunk of that record appears here, along with a few choice selections from his debut. To this set list, Clark throws in covers of Jimmy Reed’s “Honest I Do” and Elmore James’ “My Baby’s Gone.” Clark nails Reed’s laconic delivery and James’ hypercharged slide guitar, proof of his versatility and taste, since he doesn’t use either as vehicles for his virtuosity. He saves such pyrotechnics for his own work, but that’s not even the key to why Live North America 2016 works as well as it does. The album succeeds because Gary Clark, Jr. knows that blues needs songs, feel, and groove in addition to solos. Indeed, the striking thing about the album is its vibe: he may be playing to large audiences, but the record feels warm and intimate, sliding into soul grooves as often as it gets gritty. In many ways, it feels richer than his studio albums, which rely on pushing his contemporary flair to the forefront. Live North America 2016 is all about the basics and that’s why it works as well as it does. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Gary Clark Jr. is a rocking soul man for a new generation. The 27-year-old singer-guitarist shows his deep appreciation for classic hip-hop by fusing it with contemporary soul and rock. Clark has been compared to countless legends including Jimi Hendrix. The virtuosity Clark displays is profound and puts many modern rock shredders to shame. This collection which features twelve Clark originals also includes a blistering cover of Little Johnny Taylor’s “Third Stone From The Sun/If You Love Me Like You Say” and two bonus tracks. Blak and Blu has already received praise from publications including the Washington Post, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and the Boston Globe.

The winner of the 1998 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance. For this spectacular album, vibraphonist Gary Burton arranged the first recording encounter between pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny, and recruited an impeccable rhythm section staffed by bassist Dave Holland and drum legend Roy Haynes. LIKE MINDS, the resulting album, ranks among these musicians best work, with the kind of soul-deep communication that is often expected but so rarely occurs on all-star sessions.
This recording is simply sheer brilliance.”Dave Hughes, All About Jazz

Released in 1973, Crystal Silence heralded the beginning of a long and productive association between Gary Burton and Chick Corea, even leading to a Crystal Silence sequel in 2008. The popularity of their collaboration far exceeded expectations for interest in a band consisting solely of piano and vibraphone; in fact Crystal Silence has gone on to become one of the most successful titles in the ECM catalogue.

The final recording by Gary Burton’s classic quartet (how about a reunion someday?) features the vibraphonist/leader, guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bob Moses mixing together aspects of rock, country and folk music in their advanced improvisations. The material (by Mike Gibbs, Burton, Coryell and Bob Dylan) is quite strong, and there are some hints of the avant-garde (including “One, Two, 1-2-3-4” and Burton’s freely improvised solo piece “Dreams”). All of the influential Burton-Coryell recordings (among the earliest fusion records) are currently difficult to find and are deserving reissue as a box set.

Gary Burton’s involvement in any project guarantees smoothness and melodic robustness, and Easy As Pie is no less promising than one would expect from the mallet master. As the title may imply, the results are generally laid back, but ever virtuosic. From the first licks of “Reactionary Tango” (Carla Bley) we get a taste of the banquet about to be laid before us. Jim Odgren shines on reeds the pages of this developing story, snipping from them a string of paper dolls. As one is swept away by the strains of “Summer Band Camp” (Mick Goodrick)—a fantastic piece that first appeared on the composer’s In Pas(s)ing—one notices just how integral Odgren is to the overall sound. “Blame It On My Youth” (Oscar Levant) is emblematic of what Burton does so well, capturing moments and memories as if in snapshots of living sound. In this solo piece, he sews that feeling of nostalgia into every motivic cell of activity. And further in “Isfahan” (Strayhorn/Ellington), a smoky ballad with plenty of shadow in which to luxuriate unseen, Burton turns that shadow into liquid gold in the throes of his soloing. Just so this joint doesn’t weigh us down with too much dark energy, two Chick Corea tunes, “Tweek” and “Stardancer,” give us plenty of beat to chew on and highlight Steve Swallow’s unstoppable groove. Between the kaleidoscopic drum solo from Mike Hyman and Odgren’s storybook endings, there is more than enough color to go around.

The production is exemplary: Seven Songs set a new standard for recordings of orchestral jazz.

“This set of duets by vibraphonist Gary Burton and guitarist Ralph Towner features a logical matchup, since both musicians are open to folk melodies and are generally quiet improvisers. In addition to six Towner originals and Burton’s “Brotherhood,” the set has thoughtful versions of “Some Other Time” and “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.” More tempo and mood variation would have uplifted the otherwise fine music” (Scott Yanow, AMG).
