The idea of a Flemish-style organ for the church of Beurnevésin, which had never had a pipe organ, very quickly became obvious to me. Indeed, given the richness of the region’s organological heritage and the desire to further enrich it, the choice of this aesthetic, which is still unrepresented (and in fact rarely present outside Flanders), was fully justified. Moreover, in 2008 I had already reconstructed a Flemish instrument for the church of Cossonay (Switzerland), and this small organ had given me the aspiration to build a larger instrument.

Though not as well-known as his songs and operettas, the chamber music of Reynaldo Hahn (1874–1947) nevertheless includes some of his finest scores. It is thus not to be overlooked within his oeuvre, nor should it be considered subsidiary to his contribution to the musical theater. The present recording of the chamber music oeuvre of Reynaldo Hahn by the Quatuor Tchalik and Dania Tchalik on the piano is a project that coincides with the major retrospective, both musical and iconographic, on the Venezuelan-born French composer organized by the Palazzetto Bru Zane in 2019.

The present program features four sonatas for violin and piano written around 1920 by four composers of different nationalities and contrasting aesthetics, a representative panorama of the aesthetic profusion of musical Europe at that time. Here we find the relics and prolongations of Romanticism, the irruption of avant-gardes, and folk music being taken into account, this giving a new sense to the affirmation of musical nationalism.
The first two decades of the 20th century witnessed a fantastic springing up of avant-gardes, pushing the respective arts to stick to their own medium and forcing artists to develop their own aesthetic idioms. All this represents an excess of modernity when the sole forming of a movement immediately condemned it to being irremediably surpassed. For all that, trends inherited from the 19th century – post-Romanticism as well as the national schools – did not disappear. Remaining in the background, they continued to resonate with these new trends. ….

Thanks to the fact that good music was heard in his house “all his life” Gabriel Peluffo was infected by the passion for tango that his parents showed. “One always has the Berretín to venture into another style,” he says while laughing accomplice in the meeting he had with Underlining at the Museo del Tango. The themes chosen for the new album, which is called “De barro y asfalto”, “try to recreate a personal world” and do not have a style or temporal logic. The frontman of Buitres is clear: “I’m not leaving anything.” For the tranquility of fans around the world, the Vultures project is still standing. As it is said in the Rio de la Plata, “tango sooner or later comes to you”, and surely this artistic proposal by Gabriel Peluffo will take him to the homes of many of his followers of multiple generations, thus fulfilling the sentence.

Nonesuch Records is pleased to announce that it will release Gabriel Kahane’s 8980: Book of Travelers later this year. The album’s genesis began on the day after the 2016 presidential election, when Kahane embarked—with no cell phone or other internet-connected device—on a looping, 8,980-mile railway journey through the United States. Over the course of two weeks, he broke bread with dozens of strangers whose stories were woven into a song cycle that he subsequently premiered at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) earlier this year. Written and performed by Kahane (vocals and keyboards), and conceived in collaboration with director Daniel Fish and designer Jim Findlay (set and video design) with lighting by Mark Barton, 8980: Book of Travelers is a personal yet expansive meditation on the idiosyncrasies and anachronisms of train travel, which simultaneously grapples with the wrenching reality of a divided country.
Singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane has recorded critically-acclaimed albums including The Ambassador (called “one of the year’s best” by Rolling Stone); The Fiction Issue, an album of his chamber music with string quartet Brooklyn Rider; and Where Are the Arms. The staged version of The Ambassador, directed by Tony-winner John Tiffany, was presented by BAM (2014 Next Wave), CAP UCLA, and Carolina Performing Arts. As a composer of concert works, Kahane has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oregon Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, with whom he toured his WPA-inspired Gabriel’s Guide to the 48 States in 2013. He has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and A Far Cry. An avid theater artist, Kahane’s musical February House, with playwright Seth Bockley, premiered at the Public Theater in 2012 and was recorded by the StorySound label. A two-time MacDowell Colony fellow, Kahane has performed and/or recorded with artists ranging from Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, Blake Mills, Chris Thile, and Brad Mehldau, to Jeremy Denk, yMusic, and John Adams. He is a graduate of Brown University and resides in Brooklyn.

Showbiz has been in Gwen Stefani’s blood since the start of her career, which is the reason why she, unlike many ’90s alt-rock veterans, can seem at home within the confines of the televised musical competition The Voice. Her very presence on The Voice, one of the last genuinely popular franchises on network television in the 2010s, guaranteed the existence of an album like You Make It Feel Like Christmas, one that’s pitched directly in the mainstream. You Make It Feel Like Christmas plays upon her romance with co-host Blake Shelton, making her bouncy duet with the country singer the album’s title track and first single. “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” bops along to a Motown beat, just one of many intentional nostalgic nods at the past — “Never Kissed Anyone with Blue Eyes” grooves to a simmering ’60s soul groove, her version of “Santa Baby” has a mid-century swing, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is given drippy strings that turn it into a girl group number — but the record is surprisingly heavy on new material for a holiday album. Occasionally, this means Stefani veers into territory that doesn’t feel strictly seasonal: “When I Was a Little Girl” plays like a diary entry, not a memory of Christmases past, “My Gift Is You” is a love song bearing the faintest hint of mistletoe, and “Never Kissed Anyone with Blue Eyes” has only a tangential relationship with Christmas. They don’t seem out of place, since they’re given the same bells and whistles as “Let It Snow” and “White Christmas,” but they also diminish the album, making it seem smaller than the season. Still, the moments that work have a coquettish charm that is appealing, which is reason enough to warrant a listen.

Pugsley, the US-based choir Gloriæ Dei Cantores has gained a reputation for its impeccable vocal blend as well as bold programming, including its recent championing of the music of Jewish composer Samuel Adler. Adler and his family escaped Nazi Germany in 1939, settling in the United States, where he went on to compose more than 400 works. Fumiaki Miyamoto (宮本文昭) is a Japanese classical oboist and conductor. He’s began his worldwide career at the age of 18, when he moved to Germany to study under Helmut Winschermann. He played in the municipal symphony orchestra in Essen, the Frankfurt Broadcast Symphony Orchestra, and then Cologne Broadcast Symphony Orchestra; he was the first Japanese oboist to hold first chair in Europe. He continued to live there until the year 2000, in which he returned to Japan. He has released several albums, not only in classical but also in pop fields like jazz, film music.
