This is the debut solo album from former (unique Kendal foursome) Wild Beasts frontman Hayden Thorpe. Written in California, Cornwall and at home in London. The reincarnation of Hayden Thorpe was recorded with Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno/David Byrne) at Hayden’s London home and at Leo’s Cornish studio. Portentous piano announces the Hayden Thorpe album. The easy dulcet tones which are at times cool, calm and collected but can so easily climb to a mercurial falsetto. Emotive and passionate tones are evocative of sadness, time passing and peaceful acceptance.

The prime symbol of Red Goddess (Of This Men Shall Know Nothing), is mugwort. A herb associated with dreaming, travel and menstruation, mugwort particularly favors edgelands: those abandoned, untended places, part man-made, part rural, where nature begins to reclaim what humanity has left behind. The music here unfolds a mandala of symbolism from these liminal spaces, drawn from a web of fascinations which unfolded during the recording process.

There can never be another album quite like “Space Ritual”. Captured live, for many, it’s Hawkwind’s very apex – the sound of your brain being fried. Originally edited into four glorious sides, it now spills across two extended discs with bonus tracks. From hereon in, Hawkwind were permanently cast as sonic overlords with wit and intelligence just as strong as the substances coursing through their veins. There was always something of the whiff of Campari about poet and sometime frontman Robert Calvert among the heavy sweating hairies, as if he was puffing a cigarette through a holder, observing, detailing. The doom metal of Time We Left This World Today slamming in after Calvert’s Richard III-isms on Sonic Attack still thrills. Space Ritual is as central to the 70s as The Dark Side of the Moon of the three-day week.

“I’ve always had this constant hunger to innovate, reevaluate what I do, and keep remaking it to confuse myself and maybe confuse my audience,” Workman said in a statement. “This time, I’m just committing to writing focused and honest songs, which feels like the most interesting thing I can do right now.”
“This album is beautifully sentimental,” Workman added. “I have a unique perspective on the world that comes from the person I think I am and the person I actually am, and I wanted to explore the latter. There’s a lot of looking back at being a kid and more innocent times.”

Hawklords release TIME, their 10th album in 10 years, on 6th August 2021. The band members are: Tom Ashurst, Dave Pearce, ‘Dead’ Fred Reeves and Jerry Richards, with a guest appearance on the song, “Take Off Your Mask” from long-time Hawklords stalwart and former Hawkwind bassist, Adrian Shaw, plus the astounding saxophone and transcendental flute of Chris ‘Beebe’ Aldridge (Rudimental and Ben E King) threaded throughout the album. Recorded under lockdown conditions between November 2020 and May 2021, the album is described by the band as, “Observations of life, seen through the prism of TIME.” Featuring killer songs such as “Speed of Sound” a tribute to the aeronauts of the halcyon days of the Supersonic Age of the late 1940s, to the ear-worm Pop of “Turn You On” and the bone-crushing power of the dystopian “To The New Age” a song that would sit well on any Stooges album, TIME is a sci-fi fantasy trip down a rabbit hole full of surprises and instant hook-lines. The package is completed with stunning artwork from the British graphic designer, Martin Cook.

Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the survival drama Adrift. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award nominee Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) (Lion, Patrick Melrose, Gunpowder, The Current War). Adrift is directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, 2 Guns) and stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. The movie tells the true story of Tami Oldham, who, after being knocked unconscious by the largest hurricane in the history of the Pacific Ocean, awakens to find her fiancé badly injured, their boat in ruins, and no means of communication or navigation. Following triumphs that included the imaginative experiments of 2017’s What If and his scores for the films Adrift and The Current War, Hauschka’s Volker Bertelmann makes his Sony Classical debut with A Different Forest, an album that exemplifies his talent at creating a sense of place with his music. Instead of the prepared piano that is usually at the heart of most Hauschka albums, Bertelmann uses pure piano to reflect the eternal beauty of the woods. However, A Different Forest is very much a piece with the rest of his work, echoing the searching feel of What If, the tender melodies of Ferndorf, and the musical landscapes of Abandoned City. Bertelmann begins the album with “Hike,” a piece whose winding, contemplative melody feels organic and inviting; much like a walk in the woods, its ebb and flow lets listeners give themselves over to the rhythms of nature. In Bertelmann’s hands, these rhythms are ever-changing. True to its name, “Urban Forest” is linear, percussive, and modern-feeling; “Hands in the Anthill” rises and falls on itself in intricate patterns. A Different Forest’s moods are just as complex, spanning the effortless grace of “Dew and Spiderwebs” and “Skating Through the Woods,” the sunny “Daybreak Over Covent Garden,” and more somber moments such as “Talking to My Father” and “Woodworkers.” By the time A Different Forest ends with “Another Hike,” it’s clear that this is a serene, thought-provoking album that grows richer with each listen. ~ Heather Phares
