For his third album on Artalinna, the Japanese Hiroaki Takenouchi invites us to rediscover three little-known variation cycles, including Grieg’s sumptuous Ballade, inspired by a popular Norwegian song. With his major Second Improvisation, Medtner creates an immense pantheistic journey, which lasts half an hour. A very rare work, dedicated to the famous French organist Marcel Dupré, whose astonishing Variations in C minor, Op. 22, are presented in response. A truly original tour of Europe!

“We’re a bunch of outsiders who refused to be kept out,” says High Pulp drummer Bobby Granfelt. “We’ve never had an academic approach to jazz-most of us grew up playing in DIY bands-so it was the rawness and the energy and the absolute freedom of the music that called to us in the first place.” Indeed, there’s something defiant, something utterly liberating about High Pulp’s remarkable ANTI- Records debut, Pursuit of Ends. Drawing on punk rock, shoegaze, hip-hop, and electronic music, the band’s brand of experimental jazz is both vintage and futuristic all at once, hinting at times to everything from Miles Davis and Duke Ellington to Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. The songs here balance meticulous composition with visceral spontaneity, and the performances are nothing short of virtuosic, fueled by raw, ecstatic horn runs ducking and weaving their way around thick bass lines and dizzying percussion. While the Seattle-based collective is centered around a crew of six core members, they also make judicious use of a broad network of collaborators on the album, wrangling special guests like sax star Jaleel Shaw (Roy Haynes, Mingus Big Band), harpist Brandee Younger (Ravi Coltrane, The Roots), GRAMMY-nominated trumpet?er Theo Coker, and keyboardist Jacob Mann (Rufus Wainwright, Louis Cole) to help stretch the boundaries of their already-expansive sonic universe. The result is a lush, cinematic collection that’s as unpredictable as it is engrossing, an urgent, exhilarating instrumental album that manages to speak to the moment without uttering a single word.

Giuseppe Verdi travelled to St Petersburg in 1862 to premiere La forza del destino, which had been commissioned by the city’s Imperial Theatre. The source material appealed to the composer’s sense of tragic intensity and the ruthlessness of destiny. The local audience was accustomed to 18th-century Italian opera as well as French grand opéra, and the resulting work is a synthesis of aristocratic drama and popular comedy. In 1869 he revised the work so that it ends in death and transfiguration. This critically admired production of the revised version is conducted by Zubin Mehta, in a new staging that was ‘enriched by some brilliant artists’ (Lyric Opera Journal).

Arnold Schoenberg is best known as an atonal modernist, but before he made the 12-tone Faustian bargain, he was a Viennese late romantic. These two works are from his early romantic period, and they are wonderful. Both are programmatic works. Verklärte Nacht is based on a poem describing a woman’s late night confession to her lover that she bears a child from another man, and his acceptance and forgiveness. Pelleas und Melisande is based on a play describing an illicit love affair, somewhat similar to the story of Francesca da Rimini. But the stories don’t really matter because the music is so lovely. This style is firmly within von Karajan’s wheelhouse, and his performance doesn’t disappoint. If you love Mahler and Strauss and fin de siècle orchestral decadence, you will enjoy this.

“Revival” is an as-of-yet totally undiscovered electric jazz rock recording from 1977 composed by visual artist, activist and multi instrumentalist Herbert Bodzin. Bodzin, born in 1936, was a prominent figure in the local scene and initiator of the Jazzclub Hohenlimburg from 1957 to 1964. Hohenlimburg was where artists like Doldinger and the George Maycock Trio performed during the golden age of modern jazz and hard bop. On “Revival” you can expect straight, yet soulful fusion featuring deep downtempo and psychedelic flute breaks for the rare groove aficionado.

Herbert Bodzin’s “Revival II” is the next exciting vinyl highlight on our young label. It features completely unreleased electronic music which was recorded between 1979 and 1982.

The recordings – originally entitled “Multi Art – Electronic Sounds” – luckily survived on a cassette tape after an arsonist set fire to Bodzin’s house and burned it to the ground in September of 1986. We already told you the full story about this calamity in the notes to the first volume of “Revival”: Herbert Bodzin, his wife as well as his four children were safe but an incredible array of expensive early synthesizers and studio equipment as well as nearly all of his recordings were irretrievably lost. Bodzin recalls today that he had at least 10 times more recorded material on original reels.

Henry “Skipper” Franklin (born October 1, 1940) is an American jazz double bassist.

Franklin played on Hugh Masekela’s 1968 number one single, “Grazing in the Grass,” as well as with Masekela’s band at the Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967. In addition, Franklin has played and recorded with Gene Harris & the Three Sounds, Hampton Hawes, Freddie Hubbard, Bobbi Humphrey, Willie Bobo, Archie Shepp, O.C. Smith, Count Basie, Stevie Wonder and Al Jarreau. Franklin’s recording—composed by Sanifu Al Hall, Jr.– “Soft Spirit” was featured on the breakbeat compilation Tribe Vibes as it had been sampled by the musical group A Tribe Called Quest.

Encourage by his father, Sammy Franklin, a jazz trumpeter and bandleader, he studied with Al McKibbon and George Morrow and listening to Paul Chambers and Doug Watkins.

While attending the Manual Arts High School he played with his first professional band – the Roy Ayers Latin Jazz Quintet. Around that time, Franklin worked with Harold Land and Hampton Hawes. Years later he would tour Europe with Hawes and record five albums with him. In Los Angeles, Franklin also played with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Billy Higgins and Scott LaFaro.

In 1968, after a year-long tour of the East Coast playing with Willie Bobo and working gigs on his days off with Archie Shepp, Lamont Johnson, Beaver Harris and Roswell Rudd, Hugh Masekela heard Henry play and made him an offer. Three and a half years later the two would collaborate on Grazing in the Grass.

In 1972, Franklin released his debut album The Skipper through Black Jazz Records. It was called “adventurous postbop” by music critic Tom Hull.

Revisited is a hybrid of studio and concert recordings from the acclaimed Norwegian pianist/composer Helge Lien and his trio.

Miraculously, however, you can’t hear the hybrid nature of the source material. All tracks blend into a cohesive, 50-minute piece: There are no sounds from the audience and the studio takes feel as urgent as the live performances.

After the departure of Frode Berg (after ‘Guzuguzu’) and Per Oddvar Johansen (after ’10’), Helge Lien had to re-think and re-assemble his trio. All the while, he continued to record and (virtually) perform you could call it improvisation squared.

Quite amazing what astonishing musical colours and sound effects an ensemble of three reed instruments can achieve. To be heard on the new album with Swiss music legend Heinz Holliger. The title »Les Roseaux Chantants», the »singing reeds», refers to the double reed through which the oboe and cor anglais (and also the bassoon) are blown to set the air vibrating and produce sounds. Works by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Swiss composer Rudolph Ganz (1877-1972), Anton Wranitzky and Heinz Holliger. A fascinating sound and musical experience.

Even at the age of 82, the Swiss oboist, composer and conductor Heinz Holliger is still bursting with verve, curiosity and the desire to make music. His latest album is called “Les Roseaux chantants”, an allusion to the double reed with which the notes on the oboe and English horn are made to sound. Works were chosen that were composed for the unusual combination of two oboes plus English horn. A tonally delightful sound and musical experience, as the works by Beethoven, Wranitzky, the Swiss composer Rudolph Ganz and, last but not least, Heinz Holliger himself, impressively demonstrate.

Jazz vocalist Heidi Skjerve and pianist Daniel Formo have shared sunny days and rainy days, laundry, renovation projects and parenting for many years, but have now for the first time recorded an album together. During the recent pandemic times when we all have realized just how much people need other people, and how musicians need other musicians to play with, they gathered some topnotch jazz musicians at Øra Studio in Trondheim to record some of their favorite jazz standards about love and longing. The result is the present release “I’m Glad There Is You”, featuring a playful rhythmic and improvisational approach to the melodies, strong and seductive harmonies and arrangements referring to some of the great recordings from the jazz tradition
