São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, John Neschling – Guarnieri: Symphonies Nos.1 & 4 (2003) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Continuing its excellent series of Guarnieri Symphonies, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under John Neschling presents another program of marvelous music that deserves the widest possible exposure outside of its native Brazil. Guarnieri’s First Symphony was composed in 1944 and dedicated to Serge Koussevitsky. It’s as fine an example of American (in the widest sense) neo-classicism as anything by Copland, Harris, or Piston, and it’s worth pointing out that this confidently mature work actually precedes much of those composers’ symphonic output, as it does, say, Tippett’s, whose rhythmic complexity and contrapuntal business it in some ways resembles. The central slow movement, marked “Profundo”, is particularly well sustained and supports the composer’s claim to be regarded a major 20th century symphonist. Symphony No. 4, in three brief movements lasting less than 20 minutes, is subtitled “Brasília”, but it’s dedicated to Leonard Bernstein and was largely composed in New York. Both Bernstein and the composer were especially impressed by the marvelous central slow movement (which is as long as the two outer movements combined), and in particular with its “crazy” climax. A pellucid, formally elegant, richly scored work based on Brazilian folk music (but never slavishly so and never at the expense of structural coherence), it would make a terrific “first half” piece at a typical symphony concert. The Abertura Festiva lives up to its name, being brilliantly scored with an especially colorful percussion battery–and like the eponymous piece by Shostakovich, it’s simply a joy from start to finish. If you acquired the first disc in this series (and if you didn’t, you should be ashamed), then you know that Neschling and his orchestra turn in first-rate playing. Only a bit of strain in the big fugue toward the end of the First Symphony’s opening movement reveals the string players under pressure, but otherwise this is world-class music-making in the service of world-class music. Glorious sonics, solid on the bottom and bright but never shrill on top, complete a most attractive picture. –David Hurwitz, Classics Today

This disc must be counted among the most interesting and important releases of the year. Brazilian composer Camargo Guarnieri (his real first name was Mozart, and he had three brothers: Bellini, Rossini, and Verdi) appears from time to time on pops programs, represented by some cute little Brazilian dance miniature, but he was in truth a major composer, and a symphonist of extraordinary mastery and confidence. While remaining true to his nationalist roots, his style owes nothing to that of Villa-Lobos, being far more disciplined and neo-classical in outlook. He shares something of the motoric drive and enthusiasm for counterpoint of Honegger, the folk-inspired melodic character of Bartók, and the plain-spoken directness of Copland. The result sounds like no one else and makes for some very satisfying listening.

Ivan Repušic, who made his debut as principal conductor of the Münchner Rundfunkorchester in theautumn of 2017 with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Luisa Miller”, now presents a lesser-known masterpiece by the famous Italian opera composer. The concert performance of Verdi’s early stage work “I due Foscari” was recorded on November 25, 2018 at the Munich Prinzregententheater.

Verdi’s early masterpiece “I due Foscari” was the first opera he wrote for the Teatro Argentina in Rome. He had already worked on the material (Lord Byron’s drama “The Two Foscari”), and, after a first subject had been rejected by the Roman censors, Verdi returned to it and had the libretto written by Francesco Maria Piave. Although the opera’s premiere on November 3, 1844 was only moderately successful, the work was still frequently performed up to the 1870s. It was rediscovered during the early 1950s and has since become a fixed part of the international opera repertoire.

The Guano Apes’ debut album, Proud Like a God, was originally released in their native Germany in 1997, and it made them a popular European concert draw with its punk- and alternative-flavored hard rock, establishing them enough for RCA to issue the album in the U.S. in 1999. It’s somewhat derivative, but also effectively aggressive and intense, and that’s what matters most with a record like this. The songwriting slips occasionally, but there are a number of strong moments as well, including thee album leadoff track and first single “Open Your Eyes.”

What an exquisite release this is. By turns meditative, inquiring, playful and restless. But always provocative. And with an element of sensuous fantasy. For her debut recording, Helsinki-based Spanish cellist Guadalupe López Iñiguez takes a holistic approach to the complete works for cello of baroque composers Domenico Gabrielli and Alessandro Scarlatti – one embracing psychology, musicology and sociology. She is accompanied by like-minded musicians: a continuo ensemble comprising Markku Luolajan-Mikkola (baroque cello), Olli Hyyrynen (baroque guitar and archlute) and Lauri Honkavirta (harpsichord).

Gruff Rhy releases his new album Seeking New Gods through Rough Trade Records. This is Gruff’s seventh solo album. Seeking New Gods was recorded following a US tour with his band and mixed in LA with superstar producer Mario C (Beastie Boys).

The album concept was originally driven to be the biography of a mountain, Mount Paektu (an East Asian active volcano). However, as Gruff’s writing began to reflect on the inhuman timescale of a peak’s existence and the intimate features that bring it to mythological life, both the songs and the mountain became more and more personal.

Winelight is a smooth, well produced groove, that flows together nicely. It is an album good for waking up to on a Sunday morning, or playing while enjoying a bottle of wine late Saturday night. The songs feature enough tempo changes to keep things interesting, and Grover extends several of his solos, often playing beyond the context of the song. Ralph MacDonald’s percussion is particularly effective throughout the album.
