This is a prime example of an informal studio jam session in the critical period when John Coltrane was perfecting his ‘sheets of sound’ approach. The emerging tenor star is the focal point in a quintet filled with serendipitous connections. Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, and Paul Chambers were at the forefront of an emerging generation of young Detroit modernists; Burrell, Coltrane, and Flanagan had proved their compatibility a year earlier on The Cats (OJC-079); and Jimmy Cobb was poised to become a regular partner of Coltrane and Chambers in the Miles Davis sextet. The tenor/guitar duet ‘Why Was I Born?’ is a unique gem in an album filled with assured and eloquent blowing.

Kenny Wheeler was born Canada in 1930 and, with encouragement from his father – himself a trombone player – began playing trumpet at age 12. After studying at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory, he arrived in London in 1952, his playing enveloped in the sounds of Miles Davis, Booker Little, and Fats Navarro. In 1959, Wheeler joined the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra and stayed there until 1963, although he returned frequently for shows and other projects in the years that followed. He quickly become a distinguished soloist in the Orchestra and appeared on Dankworth’s key sixties albums. Wheeler met and played with the rising artists of London’s free jazz scene. Players such as Trevor Watts, Derek Bailey, and Evan Parker, musicians who would challenge the conventions of the day, eschewing formal composition and structure to embark on group improvisation. For a musician thoroughly schooled in all the conventions of charts and dance bands as Wheeler was, this was a radical departure. Wheeler’s contributions proved his ample flexibility and showed he was capable of inhabiting both the free environment and the more formal and controlled settings of a big band and orchestra. This was shown most clearly on his debut album, Windmill Tilter, recorded for Fontana with the John Dankworth Orchestra. The album features a young John McLaughlin on guitar along with bassist Dave Holland and a roster of talented and well respected musicians playing on one of the greatest modern jazz big band and orchestral albums.

Recorded in December 2020 at Church Studios in London, the recording session brings together UK jazz artists, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, Dave Okumu, Benji B, Tom Skinner and more. Producer Martin Terefe describes, “Sometimes the music is uncomfortable, other times it’s familiar and joyous and other times it’s like deep meditation.” This album will be a 2-LP set.

His most sustained success was as a songwriter during the post war years in Chicago, where he was supplying songs to a range of artists, from Muddy Waters and Little Walter to Otis Spann and others.
Always dissatisfied with his own playing, he usually was recorded as a singer, accompanied by his friends, Roosevelt Sykes and Sunnyland Slim. He continued to record quite prolifically throughout the ‘50’s, until a car accident slowed him down. Though he did attempt a few sides early in the decade,most of his 1960’s period was associated with composing.
