Wild Bill Davis pioneered the Hammond Organ in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His always famous driving and swinging trio concept with organ, guitar and drums has served as inspiration for all important jazz organists including Jimmy Smith. From 1964 to 1969, Wild Bill Davis was under contract with RCA Victor and recorded a number of remarkeable albums. “Midnight To Dawn” – Wild Bill’s personal favorite album – recorded on August 10 & 11, 1966 with members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and James “Dickie” Thompson on guitar.

With the dynamic, swirling sounds of his Hammond B-3 organ, Wild Bill Davis provided a bridge from the big band swing of the 1930s and ’40s to the organ-driven R&B of the 1950s and early ’60s. Together with guitarist Floyd Smith and drummer Chris Columbus, Davis set the framework for the jazz organ combo sound. Initially a guitarist, Davis made his debut with Milt Larkin’s band in 1939. The group is remembered for the double-saxophone attack of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and Arnett Cobb. Davis, who was inspired by the guitar playing of Freddie Green, remained with the band until 1942. Moving to the piano, Davis joined Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 in 1945. By then, he had already attracted attention as a skilled writer and arranger. He later furnished original material and arrangements for both Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He was scheduled to record his arrangement of “April in Paris” with the Count Basie Orchestra in 1955, but was unable to make it to the recording sessions. Recorded without his participation, the tune went on to be a Top 30 pop hit. Intrigued by the organ playing of Fats Waller and Count Basie, Davis began to experiment with the Hammond B-3. He soon developed his unique approach. “I thought of (the organ) as a replacement in clubs for a big band,” he said during a late-’80s interview. Although he left Jordan’s band after five years to form his own trio, Davis periodically returned to play special engagements. Although eclipsed by succeeding jazz organists, including Jimmy Smith and Bill Doggett in the late ’50s, and Booker T. Jones in the ’60s, Davis remained active until his death from a heart attack in August 1995. His summer appearances in Atlantic City, New Jersey were an annual treat for almost three decades. A native of Moorestown, New Jersey, Davis studied music at Tuskegee University and Wiley College in Texas. –Artist Biography by Craig Harris

Natural/Cultural Forces is a musical representation of visual locations and situations. For the opener Pyramid Warren instructed the three other members of the quartet to imagine what it would sound like to be on the inside a pyramid building up. Hence the crescendos for the grand size of the pyramid and the intimate small playing describing the small interior of a such a large structure.

This is a superb Hank Jones date; highly recommended for fans of piano trio music. In 1955, most jazz pianists were immersed in the school of Bud Powell. Jones is unique in that he developed his harmonic concept prior to Powell’s ascendancy and the bebop revolution, but went on to fully assimilate the melodic vocabulary of bop. He has synthesized important elements from many great players into his own recognizable style. His versatility is evident on these eight selections. Jones plays swinging bop lines on his original “We’re All Together” and his blues head, “Odd Number,” displays the Powell influence most clearly. Upon hearing the delicate touch and harmonic subtlety with which Jones plays ballads – including “We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together,” “Cyrano,” “There’s a Small Hotel,” and “My Funny Valentine” – one can imagine that a young Bill Evans was quite familiar with this recording. Jones’ mastery of block chords is particularly impressive. Occasionally reissued under drummer Kenny Clarke’s name, this important Savoy session also includes bassist Wendell Marshall, who had spent the previous seven years with Duke Ellington’s band.

Oscar Pettiford was one of the top bassist of the 1945-1960 period, and the successor to the late Jimmy Blanton. In addition, he was the first major jazz soloist on the cello. After starting piano, Pettiford switched to bass when he was 14 and played in a family band. He played with Charlie Barnet’s band in 1942 as one of two bassists and then hit the big time in 1943, participating on Coleman Hawkins’ famous “The Man I Love” session; he also recorded with Earl Hines and Ben Webster during this period. Pettiford co-led an early bop group with Dizzy Gillespie in 1944, and in 1945 went with Coleman Hawkins to the west coast, appearing on one song in the film The Crimson Canary with Hawkins and Howard McGhee.

Pettiford was part of Duke Ellington’s orchestra during much of 1945-1948, and worked with Woody Herman in 1949. Throughout the 1950s, he mostly worked as a leader.

In the 1950s and early ’60s, producer Norman Granz perfected the songbook approach to album production by having vocalist Ella Fitzgerald interpret large segments of the standard jazz repertoire. In a frankly stated effort to expand the listening audience for this great body of work, Granz also asked Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson to churn out numerous instrumental songbooks albums under his own name with various combos. By the end of the decade, these included Oscar’s newly reconfigured trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Like its companion albums, Peterson’s Richard Rodgers Song Book was never intended as a set of exercises in soul-searching profundity. Instead what you get are simple, straightforward, well-played appreciations of great American songwriting. Most of the melodies on this album resulted from Rodgers’ extraordinary collaborative relationship with lyricist Lorenz Hart, and a couple of Oscar Hammerstein numbers were thrown in as well. Those who enjoy this pleasant offering may wish to investigate Peterson’s songbook salutes to Duke Ellington, Vincent Youmans, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, and numerous others.

Exclusively for My Friends’ is widely seen as the centerpiece of any Oscar Peterson collection. Peterson himself went into raptures about the MPS recordings, stating that, thanks to the intimate recording atmosphere in Hans Georg Brunnder-Schwer’s living room and his pursuit of perfection as a sound engineer and producer, they belonged to his best. The private recordings were made between 1963 and 1968 and are the impressive result of the long-standing friendship between the exceptional Canadian pianist and the label owner from the Black Forest. They serve to document Peterson’s exquisite playing style in high profile trios as well as Brunner-Schweer’s keenness to create almost audiophile sound characteristics.

While the 1960 live album Ella in Berlin: Mack The Knife will always be the peak of Ella Fitzgerald’s solo recording career, this exciting discovery is yet another example of her voice and interpretative drive being pushed to new heights by her audience. The great jazz singer’s other strength as a soloist when it came to recordings—other than her fine collaborations with Louis Armstrong, which are practically their own genre—are the songbook collections she made in the studio with Norman Granz for his Verve label. While they all have their strong points, and the Duke Ellington collection where he and his band back her is exceptional, the volumes dedicated to Cole Porter and Irving Berlin rang true and sold big numbers, and it was music from those two collections that was featured in a split program at the Hollywood Bowl on August 16, 1958. The first pleasant surprise here is the sound. Project producer Gregg Field, who actually played drums with Fitzgerald for a time, has heroically recovered an enormous amount of information from the 64-year-old 1/4″ tapes. Though rounded and dynamically limited, the sound is reasonably well-balanced between Fitzgerald’s voice and the accompanying full orchestra. While it may be the presence of the audience spurring her on during the upbeat numbers, including many of Berlin’s best-known tunes, they are delicious here.

From 1951-92 Erwin Lehn conducted one of Germany’s leading swing big bands, the Radio Stuttgart Dance Orchestra. The band included top names from the international jazz scene, including American trombonists Bob Burgess (Stan Kenton and Woody Herman bands) and Donald Beightol (Oliver Nelson), Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson (Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich Sextet), German Saxophonist Joki Freund (Albert Mangelsdorff, Hans Koller), and Dutch trumpet great Ack Van Rooyen. Composed by either band saxophonist Bernd Rabe or Lehn, the vibrant pieces cover a wide range of contemporary jazz. On Alfredo, bop horn lines, Van Rooyen’s sweet singing solo, along with Freund’s crisp improv stand out. Burgess highlights the trombonist’s layered depth, from ballad to rock to swing and back, whereas Atlantik 2 displays brassy, sophisticated chording, Van Rooyen’s trumpet in all its muted elegance, and hip sax and piano solos. Rabe’s moody sax opens El Cuervo Nuovo before the piece moves into a mix of Latin and swing with Van Rooyen’s majestic trumpet soaring above the band. Lift Up features Rabe on alto and Ericson’s blistering trumpet, and the aptly named Color may be portrayed as the album’s highlight. It offers a kaleidoscope of moods and hues, with just about everyone contributing to the composition’s overall texture. Funf Zu Vier (Five to Four) plays around with 4/4 and 5/4 time signatures. Despite having been one of the best and most popular big bands in Germany, Lehn’s Orchestra made surprisingly few records, especially in such a pure jazz setting. This 1974 album is possibly their best, and as such is a classic of the genre.
