With this new recording, Bruno Cocset’s Les Basses Réunies propose a journey back to 17th-century England, centring on the work of Tobias Hume, an emblematic musician of the viola da gamba and, more precisely, the lyra violl. This exploration in terms of music as much as of sound, presents three instruments that have just come from the hands of instrument-maker Charles Riché (seconded by Friederike Dangel). A distinguished guest, the talented Italian gambist Guido Balestracci, plays a selection of solo pieces by the famous soldier composer. The Lyra violl is also accompanist for pieces composed for a dessus and Lyra violl, in which case Bruno Cocset plays his little ‘bastarda alto’ viol. The continuo, subtle and lush, brings together Bertrand Cuiller on the two harpsichords (one strung with brass wire, the other with gut strings), and Richard Myron on the large bass in G.

Prince Nicolas Esterhazy, in whose service Haydn spent a large part of his life, was an enthusiastic champion of an instrument that was in the process of disappearing: this was the Baryton, a type of viola da gamba with sympathetic strings that were also able to be plucked.
Haydn composed many works for his employer’s use during the 1770s, amongst which were the 125 trios for Baryton with viola and cello.
The prince’s instrument and its case are shown on the cover of this recording and can be found in the collection of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest.

Starting off the year with a 100-song marathon in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve, Robert Pollard is setting a mighty high bar for Guided By Voices in 2020. Following three acclaimed and stylistically distinct full-length albums in 2019, Surrender Your Poppy Field, is a headspinning tour de force: a bit of everything… plus more! And hands down the most adventurous GBV album ever. There are lo-fi four-track tape recordings, there are songs recorded with a single microphone in a basement, there are big studio fullyproduced hook-laden pop songs, and there is a lot in between. Seemingly, the guiding concept of Surrender Your Poppy Field was to make the songs sound as different from one another as possible: sudden shifts in mood, tempo and rhythm, unexpected chord progressions, false endings and codas, string orchestrations, mysterious voices… It’s an exhilarating and dizzying trip to an inventive world of strange characters: Andre the Hawk, Queen Parking Lot, the Cul-de-Sac Kids, the Hard Hitter, the Steely Dodger, the Stone Cold Moron, A Man Called Physician, A Man Called Blunder… Not content with their usual mastery of the 4 P’s (punk, pop, prog, psych) Professor Pollard pushes the envelope on Poppy Field, and continues to redefine GBV from a myriad of angles. Anyone who thinks that he’s gotten complacent after 104 albums hasn’t been paying attention! Don’t miss out.

When it comes to Atlanta rap, there is no doubt about it that Gucci Mane is one of the best to ever do it. Some of the greatest names in hip hop are a product of Atlanta and the zone 6 rapper has certainly paved the way for many artists solely based off of his influence in trap music. Since his arrival back in 2005, Gucci has released over 75 mixtapes and a number of EPs, making him one of the hardest working artists in rap. The only other name that can even be in the same sentence as Wop’s is Jet Life CEO Curren$y. Today, the 1017 front man drops off his 15th studio album Ice Daddy.
The timing of this album’s release could not have been better, seeing as though Father’s Day is two days away. Between the release and the holiday, it serves as a fitting occasion for the Atlanta rapper and his newborn son, Ice. Ice Davis is the first child between Gucci and his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir. Inspired by the birth of his son, Gucci decided to have his dripped-out baby boy serve as the cover art for the album. This is the first time the couple has revealed their son publicly and it is spot on to say the least.
The two year layover between his last album, Woptober II and Ice Daddy has allowed Gucci to polish his resume as an executive with his label 1017 Records. Anchored by the success of rising star and February R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month, Pooh Shiesty, Gucci’s label who was once home to Waka Flocka and OJ The Juiceman is now thriving with youthful energy.

Continuing its excellent series of Guarnieri Symphonies, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under John Neschling presents another program of marvelous music that deserves the widest possible exposure outside of its native Brazil. Guarnieri’s First Symphony was composed in 1944 and dedicated to Serge Koussevitsky. It’s as fine an example of American (in the widest sense) neo-classicism as anything by Copland, Harris, or Piston, and it’s worth pointing out that this confidently mature work actually precedes much of those composers’ symphonic output, as it does, say, Tippett’s, whose rhythmic complexity and contrapuntal business it in some ways resembles. The central slow movement, marked “Profundo”, is particularly well sustained and supports the composer’s claim to be regarded a major 20th century symphonist. Symphony No. 4, in three brief movements lasting less than 20 minutes, is subtitled “Brasília”, but it’s dedicated to Leonard Bernstein and was largely composed in New York. Both Bernstein and the composer were especially impressed by the marvelous central slow movement (which is as long as the two outer movements combined), and in particular with its “crazy” climax. A pellucid, formally elegant, richly scored work based on Brazilian folk music (but never slavishly so and never at the expense of structural coherence), it would make a terrific “first half” piece at a typical symphony concert. The Abertura Festiva lives up to its name, being brilliantly scored with an especially colorful percussion battery–and like the eponymous piece by Shostakovich, it’s simply a joy from start to finish. If you acquired the first disc in this series (and if you didn’t, you should be ashamed), then you know that Neschling and his orchestra turn in first-rate playing. Only a bit of strain in the big fugue toward the end of the First Symphony’s opening movement reveals the string players under pressure, but otherwise this is world-class music-making in the service of world-class music. Glorious sonics, solid on the bottom and bright but never shrill on top, complete a most attractive picture. –David Hurwitz, Classics Today

This disc must be counted among the most interesting and important releases of the year. Brazilian composer Camargo Guarnieri (his real first name was Mozart, and he had three brothers: Bellini, Rossini, and Verdi) appears from time to time on pops programs, represented by some cute little Brazilian dance miniature, but he was in truth a major composer, and a symphonist of extraordinary mastery and confidence. While remaining true to his nationalist roots, his style owes nothing to that of Villa-Lobos, being far more disciplined and neo-classical in outlook. He shares something of the motoric drive and enthusiasm for counterpoint of Honegger, the folk-inspired melodic character of Bartók, and the plain-spoken directness of Copland. The result sounds like no one else and makes for some very satisfying listening.

Ivan Repušic, who made his debut as principal conductor of the Münchner Rundfunkorchester in theautumn of 2017 with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Luisa Miller”, now presents a lesser-known masterpiece by the famous Italian opera composer. The concert performance of Verdi’s early stage work “I due Foscari” was recorded on November 25, 2018 at the Munich Prinzregententheater.
Verdi’s early masterpiece “I due Foscari” was the first opera he wrote for the Teatro Argentina in Rome. He had already worked on the material (Lord Byron’s drama “The Two Foscari”), and, after a first subject had been rejected by the Roman censors, Verdi returned to it and had the libretto written by Francesco Maria Piave. Although the opera’s premiere on November 3, 1844 was only moderately successful, the work was still frequently performed up to the 1870s. It was rediscovered during the early 1950s and has since become a fixed part of the international opera repertoire.

The Guano Apes’ debut album, Proud Like a God, was originally released in their native Germany in 1997, and it made them a popular European concert draw with its punk- and alternative-flavored hard rock, establishing them enough for RCA to issue the album in the U.S. in 1999. It’s somewhat derivative, but also effectively aggressive and intense, and that’s what matters most with a record like this. The songwriting slips occasionally, but there are a number of strong moments as well, including thee album leadoff track and first single “Open Your Eyes.”
