1973 Landmark Set a Profoundly Influential Record on Country, Folk, and Rock Genres. Influential doesn’t begin to capture the scope, legacy, and brilliance of Gram Parsons’ GP. By wedding traditional country threads with folk, soul, and rock fabrics, the singer/guitarist unconsciously gave birth to a new subgenre that would later evolve into what we now know as country-rock and Americana. Thematically, Parsons proves beyond his then 25-year-old age and addresses heartbreak, yearning, dreams, and wistful feelings with the lived-in conviction of someone many years his senior.

Grover Washington, Jr., has long been one of the leaders in what could be called rhythm & jazz, essentially R&B-influenced jazz. Winelight is one of his finest albums, and not primarily because of the Bill Withers hit “Just the Two of Us.” It is the five instrumentals that find Washington (on soprano, alto, and tenor) really stretching out. If he had been only interested in sales, Washington’s solos could have been half as long and he would have stuck closely to the melody. Instead he really pushes himself on some of these selections, particularly the title cut. A memorable set of high-quality and danceable soul-jazz.

Washington’s legacy was his ability to combine jazz and pop by tracing their common roots in R&B and soul music. He found fans among the younger wave of jazz listeners, who were attracted to the sounds of what became known as “smooth jazz.”

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Muso

Stéphanie Paulet, one of the most brilliant French baroque violinists, plunges us into the world of Louis-Gabriel Guillemain, 18th-century composer, at the heart of the Enlightenment. A programme alternating pieces for solo violin of formidable virtuosity, sonatas, symphonies, divertimentos and ‘amusements’.

“When talking of a full fiery man, one of genius and vivacity, one must name Mr. Guillemain, ordinaire of the King’s music, who is, perhaps, the most rapid and the most extraordinary violin ever to be heard; his hand dazzles, there are no difficulties that can stop him, and he alone creates them in his own skilful productions that at times embarrass his rivals.

This famous artiste is one of the most prolific of the great masters, and it is agreed that his works are filled with the most zestful beauty.”

Born in the latter years of Louis XIV’s reign, Guillemain, a brilliant violinist, was employed as a Court musician. He who became the protégé of Madame de Pompadour, the king’s favourite, was also a prolific composer, and the first in France to tackle the sonata for solo violin. His ultimate opus, the guiding thread of this disc, appears as a synthesis of his musical investigations; each piece requires ever greater virtuosity, pushing further back the performance limits of the instrument.

With ensemble Aliquando, Stéphanie Paulet presents a broad and varied view of Guillemain’s output, accompanied by the finest French musicians of the day (Maude Gratton, François Lazarevich, Lucile Boulanger).

A saxophone, the desire to unravel a new kind of sound. Guillaume Perret is a sound explorer. He plays the wa-wa pedals and electric effects to elevate his notes to a new and surprising universe, one that makes you dream, distorting sounds to make them strangely more musical. His music doesn’t belong to a specific genre, rather it calls upon our senses. It is an innovative mixture of contemporary Jazz, funky grooves, screaming metal… a hybrid sort of music, troubling, bewitching, that evokes sensations and imagery. Designed as a movie soundtrack, Free aims to be a free path through different landscapes, different emotion.

The choice of this charged word for the title of his new album will surely nourish the already lively debate on the nature of Guillaume Perret’s brand of jazz. Just what exactly is it, anyway ? „Composed like a film score, FREE is a winding course ranging through various musical landscapes and emotional states“, explains the saxophonist, inviting us in for a glimpse of his deepest artistic convictions: „I had to abandon some of the slick licks and sure-fire chops. Hard as that was, it freed my playing up and offered something better – artistic honesty… I don’t need to please an audience to feel confident on stage anymore, and I feel so much freer to play what I want to“.

We owe it to William Shakespeare to have us together. It was in November 2013: inspired by the plays of the famous English playwright, we had conceived together a course mixing texts and music. Our trio found here the ferments of his poetic universe. Through the concerts, we found a sound identity and a way of dialogue that belonged to us, a balance between improvisation and writing where everyone proposes and listens simultaneously. After 3 years of existence and a record, our Shakespeare Songs were now well-honed. It was during a tour of the trio in Ireland, that Andy posed openly the question: “What comes next, guys? “. We were in March 2016, at a time when the disastrous resurgences of nationalism and populism were spreading across Europe and the United States. We were looking for a way to share our concerns and affirm our values with the best weapon we had: music. Andy suggested that Marlene Dietrich would be a particularly inspiring muse for our next creation. Actress and legendary singer, icon of the 20th century, she was also a free woman with an iron will and courageous convictions, a citizen of the world committed body and soul – against Nazism, for peace, Europe and feminism . We decided to send him these musical letters: letters of admiration and gratitude in tribute to his exceptional career as an artist and a woman who brought hope; musics to interrogate otherwise two troubled times: the years 1930-1940 and our years 2010-2020.

Música Callada – The Music of Silence. Is this a provocation? A challenge? Or perhaps a stylistic exercise? For Mompou, none of all that was the case. He was simply reacting against his time, taking refuge from it, and he considered this solo piano cycle to be his most accomplished work. His universe is based on the mystical framework he constructs around one of the verses of the Spiritual Canticle of St John of the Cross: ‘Night stilled at the awakening of dawn, hushed music, echoing solitude…’ ‘With this fascinating world as the starting point,’ explains Guillaume Coppola, ‘I wanted to reflect it in the mirror of more “music of silence”: partly by choosing works by composers whose influence Mompou had personally acknowledged, partly by freely associating other pieces that seem to share this world and to respond to each other.’
