Together with the extraordinary Violin Concerto, Valse-Scherzo and Sérénade mélancolique, they constitute a collection of glittering “Tchaikovsky Treasures”. On this first Pentatone recording, Braunstein plays with the renowned BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by maestro Kirill Karabits.

Gustavo Gimeno has been musical director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra since 2015. It was around Autumn 2016 that Pentatone announced a series of recordings – technically magnificent, as is par for the course with the Polyhymnia International engineers, who are tending the flame of the old Philips label – for which the Luxembourgeois phalanx was conducted at the Concertgebouw by Mariss Jansons’s former assistant. In recent months, the graphically-sparse series has already kicked off its releases with an album from Bruckner (with some very rare pieces); Shostakovich (with the First) and Ravel (Daphnis et Chloé). Today, Pentatone has published Mahler’s Fourth, teeming with details, broadly coloured with bucolic lyricism.

Symphony No. 8 in E-Flat Major, symphony by Gustav Mahler, known as “Symphony of a Thousand” for the great number of performers required, vastly more than were needed for any other symphony to that time. The work premiered September 12, 1910, in Munich to thoroughly favorable notice. With its massive performer requirements, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 is not frequently performed; it is, instead, reserved for grand and celebratory occasions, though the composer’s own correspondence suggests that this is exactly how he intended the work to be heard.

Gustavo Dudamel is back for an electrifying concert at the helm of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducting works by two of Austria’s greatest composers: Mozart and Mahler! Maestro Dudamel and the world-class RCO begin the evening with the perennially delightful Overture from The Magic Flute, one of the Salzburg genius’s many masterworks that combines elements of the fugue and the sonata. They then tackle Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, a work with a traditional four-movement structure but many untraditional aspects—from the predominance of solos over tutti phrases to the unusual sonorities of the scordatura violin and the finale’s soprano part (beautifully sung by the marvelous Camilla Tilling), this rustic and bucolic symphony brims with unique character.

Gustavo Diaz-Jerez – Gustavo Díaz-Jerez: Metaludios, Books 1-3 (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Of his new release pianist Gustavo Díaz Jerez writes: “The Metaludios are relatively short works grouped in books of six pieces. In this release I present the first three, totaling eighteen pieces. This project started in 2013 but does not end here; the fourth book is almost finished and a fifth is on its way. The word Metaludio is derived from the prefix meta-, “beyond” and the suffix -ludio, from the Latin ludere, “to play”, “to exercise”. When coining this word, I tried to encompass these pieces beyond the usual preludes, interludes, etc. I have tried to give each Metaludio its own character, with distinguishing features that define its identity and differentiate it from the next. The titles give them away, sometimes because of the underlying scientific process, sometimes because of a mythological story behind, a tribute to a specific artist, or simply because of a sound resource that develops and grows in complexity.”

These two new books of metaludios, which continue the three already recorded on a CD released in 2018, explore new sound territories through the piano. Science is once again the main pillar underlying the compositional process of these twelve new pieces. Multiple scientific disciplines serve as generators of musical raw material: biology (L-system, Mice music), psychoacoustics (Eigengrau), astronomy (Bo”otes void, Cassini’s dream), artificial intelligence and machine learning (Hidden states), as well as pure mathematics (Belphegor’s prime). As in the previous three books, Gustavo D’iaz-Jerez have also found inspiration in mythological figures (Melussyne, Stribog), and have paid tribute to artists I admire (Omaggio a Carlo Gesualdo, La spiral del viento, Pavana triste). Many of the metaludios use electronics and inside-the-piano extended techniques, not as mere effects but as a necessary and integrating part of the musical discourse. It is important to Gustavo, as performer as well as composer, that the pianistic writing is as comfortable and ergonomic as possible, but without distorting the original idea or sacrificing brilliant and virtuosic writing. Since the composition of the first metaludios, back in 2013, D’iaz-Jerez demonstrates that the sound possibilities of the piano have only one limit: our own imagination.

A Partita for Chamber Orchestra with borrowings from Bach and Schütz, a symphony for String Orchestra and timpani full of sharp rhythms and a Chaconne for violin and piano of a peculiarly romantic-dark colouring: these three fundamentally different works from the first half of the 20th century stand for the spectrum of expression and the compositional handwriting of their creator.

He can be heard in such groups as Malmö Jazz Orchestra, lead by internationally acclaimed trumpeter Anders Bergcrantz, the chamber music ensemble Tegla Kvartett and electronic drum- and synth duo Josgrejen. With a melodic and energetic approach he brings playfulness and sensitivity to every constellation he finds himself in. AMALA is the first jazz quartet where he is the leader and also the group that shows the most of his own musical identity. It’s an interaction between lyrical melodies and roughness, all the time rotating around a sharp presence. This is the first release where Gustaf Rosenberg is both bandleader and composer for all tracks.
