When Iván Fischer founded the Budapest Festival Orchestra more than 30 years ago he made a personal dream become true. Core of the philosophy of the orchestra is the total absence of daily routine. It is about taking the risk, the initiative and freedom to do things differently. Every concert is therefore a joyful discovery of uncharted territory, a journey to new horizons in music. It feels unexpected and surprising as if it was played for the very first time. The Festival Orchestra is driven by an openness towards the new and the unknown, by curiosity and attention to details. It is the innovative approach to music, the musician’s dedication and their permanent strive for excellence that made Budapest Festival Orchestra the youngest of the top 10 ranked ensembles in the world.

From the symphony to the song would seem to be an enormous step: from the largest form for the largest orchestra to the smallest form for the smallest ensemble. Gustav Mahler nonetheless brought them together and interwove them in previous symphonies as well as in ‘Das Lied von der Erde’. “The long, endlessly stretched crescendo on the single note “e” (filled with so much desire) leads to the final part of Abschied, which I can only describe with the word ‘cosmic’. The voice is surrounded by floating meteors, objects, particles or stars, which move in various directions and speeds. We have left the atmosphere and look back on the beautiful green and blue planet.” – Iván Fischer, conductor

Founded in 1983 by Iván Fischer and the late pianist and conductor Zoltán Kocsis, the Budapest Festival Orchestra quickly became one of the world’s more prominent orchestras. The handpicked young virtuosos who fill its ranks produce a beautiful sound and superior ensemble performances. Supported from the outset by the City of Budapest and the Hungarian Ministry of Culture, it quickly made a name for itself by attracting top conductors and soloists, and thanks to its proactive policy of recording and touring internationally.

One of the most prominent Hungarian conductors of his generation, Ivan Fischer has established a reputation in both Hungarian and Baroque music. His interpretations of works by Liszt, Bartók, and Kodály have achieved international acclaim, and his readings of Hungarian-inspired works, like the Brahms Hungarian Dances (in Fischer’s own orchestration), have also received high praise.

Iva Bittova is the acclaimed Czech singer/performer/composer’s beautifully self-titled solo debut for ECM. This unique work expresses the essence of Bittova’s craft and explores the deep relationship between the violin and her voice. The pieces here, modestly-titled “Fragments I-XII” resist definition. An idiosyncratic ‘folk’ music, contemporary composition, improvisation, any and all of these may apply from moment to moment. Her music is lively and revolutionary.

Paul Frankenburger left his native Germany in 1933 in response to the National Socialists’ rise to power. Up to that point he had been fully immersed in the German tradition and his compositions followed in the footsteps of the great German post-Romantics like Mahler. Yet after arriving to the British Mandate of Palestine, not only did he change his name to Paul Ben-Haim, but his compositional style underwent a profound change as well. Devised by the young violinist Itamar Zorman, this album tracks how the music of the region gradually became an integral part of Ben-Haim’s compositions. Six works spanning four decades represent different stages in this process of synthesis between East and West, the transformation of Frankenburger into Ben-Haim.

If he wanted to, trumpeter Itamar Borochov could awe the audiences by showing his virtuosity on his instrument. But at the age of 32, this Israeli-born but Brooklyn-based musician since 2007, a student of Junior Mance, Charles Tolliver or Cecil Bridgewater, has chosen to go further: telling a story that connects Lower Manhattan to North Africa, modern Israel and ancient Bukhara, a story we find in his album “Boomerang”.

After the excellent “Boomerang” album released in 2016, critically acclaimed in France and around the world, Itamar Borochov once more exhibits what he can do best: putting forward his talents as an experienced melodist and a musician inhabited by a dominant spirit.
Though his hard bop past may come out at times in the structure of his compositions, this new journey proposed by Itamar Borochov (trumpet), his brother Avri (contrabass), Rob Clearfield (piano) and Jay Sawyer (drums) transports us into a space so deep and so dense that we find ourselves sucked up by all these calls from the tradition and this so modern music.
As a deep believer, Borochov also throws his authenticity into his search for “the Divine” even in the music he offers. He catches glimpses of it in various settings, both sacred and profane.

Count Imre Széchényi of Sárvár-Felsővidék was a highly regarded Austro-Hungarian diplomat and politician who counted Johann Strauss as a lifelong friend, and whose dances were popular and much in demand in his day. Széchényi composed waltzes throughout his creative period, but only a few of these have been preserved. His work was of interest to his contemporaries, and among these premiere recordings is Liszt’s own arrangement of the Ungarischer Marsch. These lively and melodious forgotten gems are brought to life on a 1908 Bechstein piano previously owned by Wagner’s grandson, Wolfgang.

The Czechenyi dynasty stood at the heart of Hungarys political and musical life in the 19th and 20th centuries. Their ideal milieu lay in the vibrant, melodious dance-patterned music, of which Imres Waltz No. 1 is a perfect example. Odons highly accomplished works reflect his sophisticated wit, whilst in Franciska, Hungary had its first female composer and in Gisa, the worlds first female film composer. Hungarian pianist Istvan Kassai graduated the Budapest Liszt Academy of Music in 1982. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire Europeen de Musiques de Paris. During his career, he has won several first prizes in international competitions such as the International Youth Piano Competition in Usti nad Labem, and the Hungarian Radio Piano Competition. György Lázár graduated from Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Teacher Training Institute as a piano teacher in 1988. In August 1989 he became a member of the Hungarian State Opera Ballet as a ballet faculty director, and he is the main director since 2005. Between his directorial tasks he performs as a piano artist in Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra.
