Alina Ibragimova, Cédric Tiberghien – Schubert: Complete works for violin and piano (2013) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The luminous partnership of Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien returns to Hyperion for this double album containing Schubert’s complete music for violin and piano. Their intelligence and technical prowess, their seamless and intimate connection as performers and their profound understanding of the music combine in magical performances.

While still in his teens, Schubert wrote four works for violin and piano that could have been given the label ‘sonata’, yet none of the four was published with that title. The first three, completed in 1816, bear instead the designation of ‘Sonatina’, perhaps to appeal to the amateur market. But these are highly accomplished works by the teenage composer and there is little ‘domestic’ feeling in the extended, mysterious unravellings of D385 which hint at compositions yet to come.

The later Violin Sonata in A major, D574 (now described as a ‘Duo’), urges the violinist on to greater virtuosic feats, and the Rondo in B minor even more so, with the piano sometimes treated as a surrogate orchestra. The extensive Fantasy in C major, written in the last year of Schubert’s life, is a masterpiece: the composer’s greatest achievement in this genre, which combines poignancy with sheer joy in life itself.

I&K performs The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, the same version that Stravinsky premiered with his friend Debussy in a private recital for a group of friends before writing the orchestral version. The repertoire of the album is magnificently surrounded by pieces of Debussy, Saint- Saëns, and Ravel, who enjoyed the première of that incredible piece at the newly constructed Theâtre des Champs-Elysees on 29th May 1913. This date would go down in history as one of the greatest musical scandals of all time. Saint-Saëns left the hall outraged, Debussy asked the most reluctant to listen to the music, and Ravel exclaimed: Genius, genius!”.

Francisco Alonso López was born in Granada on 9th May 1887. As a child he demonstrated great musical skills and curiosity, beginning his training with Antonio Segura Mesa and later with Celestino Vila de Forns, a composer and also the choirmaster of the Cathedral of Granada. Alonso soon became a major figure in the cultural life of the city thanks to his compositions and his work as conductor of two important ensembles: the Powder Workers of El Fargue Band (Granada), and the Choir of Granada Philharmonic Society.

His early works include pieces for two-hand and four-hand piano: Pilar Op.1 (dedicated to his mother), El carnaval, Ola de amor and ¡Mi adiós a Granada! The vocal genre would also be present, especially in his initial compositions for voice and piano: ¡Ingrata!, ¡Ricordate di me!, Triste amor and Venus, among others.

However, it was undoubtedly the première of his first operettas and farces in the former Cervantes Theatre in Granada which played a decisive role in his early artistic activity. Working alongside local poets and playwrights, he was able to stage his first big successes: Adriana, Castillitos en al aire, El primer beso de amor, La Cruz de los Ángeles, La Gloria, La instantánea de Perico, La niña de los Cantares and Un patio del Albaicín.

In 1911, Alonso moved his residence to Madrid, which would mark a turning point in his career. From this moment on, he would enjoy continuous premières and triumphs on the most important stages in Ma- drid, all performed before a public enthused by his operettas, reviews and musical comedies.

In a Word, the sixteenth installment of the intergenerational collaboration series FRKWYS, brings together postminimalist composer Daniel Lentz with vocalist and sound artist Ian William Craig for an album that embraces erosion and the fertility of the loam left behind. A document of shared transformation, Lentz’s elegant piano figures and Craig’s trembling tenor are wilted, warbled, and looped through manipulated tape machines in a real time composition that evokes a strange warmth and layered beauty.

‘Red Sun Through Smoke’ was recorded over two cataclysmic weeks in August 2018 in Kelowna, whilst the city was encircled by the forest fires which, under a warming climate, now regularly rage through British Columbia in summertime. With smoke engulfing the landscape, it was recorded from start to finish in the living room of a small house owned by his grandfather, who was moved into palliative care and tragically died halfway through the recording, his lungs filled with fluid as a result of the smoke.Forged in trauma and an intense, bewildering slew of mixed emotions, Ian William Craig has created an album of incredible beauty, sadness and depth. ‘Red Sun Through Smoke’ is a profoundly moving album, a standout record in a prolific body of work that shows no sign of faltering.

Ian Watson and Susanna Ogata’s acclaimed series on Coro Connections continues with the third album in their exploration of Beethoven’s Sonatas for fortepiano and violin. Written at a time when the composer was struggling to accept his growing deafness, the three sonatas on this volume were published together in 1803 as his Opus 30 and provide a remarkable trilogy – a collection of incredible variety and sophistication. The wide compositional range of this set demonstrates Beethoven’s prowess in creating bucolic, even humorous moments, contrasted with deep intensity, pathos and the truly sublime. Susanna Ogata has been praised for her ”totally convincing, spontaneous and free-flowing playing” (The Berkshire Review) and is a tenured member of the Handel and Haydn Society where she was appointed Assistant Concertmaster of the orchestra in 2014. Ian Watson has been described by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as ”a conductor of formidable ability”, and by The Times in London as a keyboard performer with ”virtuosic panache and brilliantly articulated playing” and ”a world-class soloist.” He was appointed Associate Conductor of Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society in 2016.

Ian Watson and Susanna Ogata’s acclaimed series on CORO Connections continues with the fourth disc in their exploration of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Fortepiano and Violin. The Opus 12 Sonatas that are explored on this final volume are among the most Mozartian of the sonatas. They are, however, filled with Beethoven’s inimitable voice, from the assertive Sonata No. 1, in the violin’s most brilliant and sonorous key of D major, to the pianistically brilliant No. 3 in E flat with its cascades of triplets and sextuplets. Unmistakably Beethoven!

Pure enjoyment is provided by this delightful new recording of popular Russian music arranged for clarinet and orchestra by Robin White. From Rimsky-Korsakov’s Clarinet Concerto – originally scored for military band – to the Andante Cantabile from Tchaikovsky’s first string quartet (a staple for arrangers for decades) this is a beautifully played album by one of Britain’s busiest orchestras. An interloper (but a welcome one) from Italy (but of Eastern European style) provides a superb finale. Ian Scott is the principal clarinet of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia and has been guest principal with several top London orchestras. He has previously made premiere recordings of Clarinet Concertos for ASV and Dutton. Arranger and conductor Robin White has enjoyed a very busy and varied career; his first recording (1992, Chandos) was very popular and he has made other recordings of light music for several labels. He has managed his own orchestra and choir and appeared, with his choir, in a pivotal episode of the British TV drama series EastEnders. As an arranger of light music, his work has been broadcast by BBC orchestras many times.
