Telemann’s Fantasias for the violin were published in 1735 in Hamburg amid a proliferation of similar works published between 1732 and 1735: 12 Fantasias for the flute, 12 for the viol, 36 for the harpsichord… Even for a composer as prolific as Telemann, 72 Fantasias in 4 years is impressive! While the flute fantasias have often been played and recorded, the violin fantasias have been overshadowed, suffering no doubt from their proximity to J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas. Some have considered them minor works, simple, regarding them with a hint of contempt… music for conservatory students.

For her most recent concept album, The Messenger, H’el`ene Grimaud created a fascinating pianistic dialogue between Mozart and the Ukrainian-born contemporary composer Valentin Silvestrov. The recording sessions for The Messenger took place at the start of this year at an historic Mozart site in Salzburg, the Great Hall of the University, where H’el`ene Grimaud was joined by the Camerata Salzburg. The album includes three works by Mozart: the unfinished Fantasia in D minor K 397, the famous Piano Concerto in D minor K 466, and the Fantasia in C minor K 475. They are presented in chronological order of composition and all three are among the relatively small number of works in Mozart’s vast output written in minor keys.

On this new Extended Edition, Grimaud adds another work from Valentin Silvestrov with the third movement of “3 Bagatelles, Op. 1”!

By refining the essence of his collaboration with the French pianist, he has created the seven-track Memory Echo, set for release in digital-only format on 25 October 2019.

Music has been described as a way of saving that which has been lost: a simple but strong idea, and one which has influenced Hélène Grimaud’s artistic expression. Her new album Memory deals with music’s power to bring back to life the images of the past in the present, its ability to vividly and piercingly evoke a specific time and a place. It explores the essence of memory through a series of refined miniatures for piano. The choice of repertoire covers a vast, diverse range, from the reveries of Chopin and Debussy to the timeless, folky melodies of Valentin Silvestrov.

If this album of iconic pieces for oboe has been a long-standing project for Hélène Devilleneuve – super soliste de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France – it is because of the particularly strong ties that she has with each one of them. From Bozza and his shimmering harmonies to the more obscure composer Destenay, of which this is the first French recording, each of these works show the warmth and light in the sound of the oboe.

Queen Caroline was an emblematic female figure of the 18th century: the wife of King George II of England, a woman of great beauty, a champion of science and the arts, Caroline d’Ansbach was also the friend and patroness of Handel. The latter was entrusted with the solemn music composed for the grand ceremonies that marked the reign – be it «The King shall rejoice», given for the King’s coronation, the «Queen Caroline» Te Deum written for her own ascension to the throne, or «The Ways of Zion do mourn» performed at her funeral. This recording brings together, for the first time, three works underlining the strong link between the monarch and his favourite composer. This performance by the complete forces of the choir and orchestra of Les Arts Florissants brings to life these scores which are both flamboyant and brimming over with humanity.

“Christie calibrates his performance perfectly – bringing swift movement to Handel’s rapidly set verses…but allowing plenty of spacious swagger and grandeur in the big choruses supported by trumpets…This is an ideal recording for those of us looking for a change from the enthusiastically full-throated and highly articulated Handel singing we get from many British choirs … fit for a queen.” –International Record Review

“One of the world’s finest saxophonists now reveals himself as an utterly unique and deeply personal singer. Rarely, if ever, has a performing artist managed to combine two vastly different musical expressions at such a sky-high level, and at the same time made the total output seem so clear and coherent.”

Håkon Kornstad, a shining jewel in the Jazzland roster, brings his unique skillset to the fore on “Out of the Loop”. Recorded during the 2020 pandemic lockdown in Sofienberg Church in Oslo, the album carries the listener through many textures across its tracks, often sounding electronically created – yet all sounds are generated by saxophone, or are provided by Håkon’s rich tenor voice. The Flutonette – essentially a flute with a saxophone reed mouthpiece – also makes appearances, further diversifying the sonic palette, as does the kalimba.

Alongside his celebrated performances of the classical repertory, HåkanHardenbergeris also renowned as a pioneer of significant new trumpet works. The three works on this disc were all composed with him in mind, and illustrate his many-facetted musical persona. The most recent of them, ‘True Stories’ by Betsy Jolas, was written in order to give Hardenberger and Roger Murarooccasion to perform together. Its title springs from the fact that the work forms the composer’s first attempt to work with sounds selected from daily life and either ‘tamed’ through stylization or left quasi crude.

Hüm invites the listener into a world where the European jazz tradition meets contemporary music. In the trio’s musical expression, the Nordic jazz aesthetics collide with classically inspired textures, sometimes written in odd meters. The band’s philosophy is based on an equal presence of instruments in interplay and a compositional way of thinking that originates from chamber music. In this debut album, Hüm strives to explore the possibilities of fitting improvisation into the composition in a way that blurs the distinction between improvised and through-composed music. Yet, the music is based on carefully elaborated structural elements. By creating the frames with distinct rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic devices, through-composed sections are surrounded by improvised parts characterized by interactive listening and open sonic landscapes. The process of composing this music is directly tailored to each member’s personal expression and playing style. The concept is to create improvised music based on different musical vocabulary and divergent musical backgrounds of the trio members.
