Hideki Togi is part of a family with a tradition of gagaku (ancient Japanese court music) that can be traced back 1300 years to the Nara Period (710-794). Due to his father’s job, Togi spent his childhood abroad and grew up surrounded by various kinds of music including rock, classical and jazz. After graduating from high school, he joined the music department of the Imperial Household Agency. There he gained experience with instruments such as the hichiriki, biwa, tsutsumi and cello, in addition to singing and dancing. Currently Togi passionately creates his own music by combining the natural flavor of gagaku with piano and synthesizers. He plays an important role in promoting international friendship by introducing traditional Japanese culture at home and abroad.

The program “Opera. Jazz. Blues” includes rousing and lyric jazz improvisations, unexpected arrangements and fantasias on the pieces of classical, jazz and popular music composers. The genre of crossover is a synthesis of different music genres and styles, a fashionable but often risky device. It is only justified when top class musicians possessing a high taste and artistic convincingness venture to experiment in the area. This album is exactly the case. The musicians came up with an idea of carrying out a jazz/classical experiment a few years ago, but it had to wait to be realized. It took more than a year to select the repertoire, discuss details and make arrangement of Mozart’s Alleluia, Glinka’s Inesilia that doesn’t sound like anything of itself, and the jazz hit Fly Me to the Moon that may seem so unwonted for Hibla Gerzmava. Combining classical depth and aesthetics with jazz harmonies and rhythms, an operatic voice with a swinging trio is not an easy task to accomplish, but Hibla Gerzmava and Trio of Daniel Kramer come through with flying colors.

It was between 1900 and 1930 that Ravel composed these works; from the Menuet Antique right up to La Valse, Europe, and indeed the world, are full of frenzy, acceleration, fury and finally explosion. Did this monstrous machine ever stop? It was at the end of 2015, that Hélène Tysman recorded this disc, and two phrases in particular which inspired her for this programme still resonate: the quotation of Henri de Régnier, highlighting the Valses Nobles et sentimentales, who talks of “the delicious and ongoing pleasure of a useless occupation”, and the exchanges between two aristocrats, present at a soirée preceding the 1830 revolution, who observe; “we are dancing on a volcano”, a phrase which would inspire Jean Renoir for La règle du jeu in 1939.

“Azoth” is the name French pianist Hélène Pereira has given to her debut work. Spirituality has a special role to play for her, but she focuses in her album on the alchemy of the elements, which she views as material transformation in spiritual forms. The works she has recorded, French piano music from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, were created through intense collaborations with each of the composers, with some of the works being dedicated to Pereira personally. Telemann’s Fantasias for the violin were published in 1735 in Hamburg amid a proliferation of similar works published between 1732 and 1735: 12 Fantasias for the flute, 12 for the viol, 36 for the harpsichord… Even for a composer as prolific as Telemann, 72 Fantasias in 4 years is impressive! While the flute fantasias have often been played and recorded, the violin fantasias have been overshadowed, suffering no doubt from their proximity to J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas. Some have considered them minor works, simple, regarding them with a hint of contempt… music for conservatory students.

For her most recent concept album, The Messenger, H’el`ene Grimaud created a fascinating pianistic dialogue between Mozart and the Ukrainian-born contemporary composer Valentin Silvestrov. The recording sessions for The Messenger took place at the start of this year at an historic Mozart site in Salzburg, the Great Hall of the University, where H’el`ene Grimaud was joined by the Camerata Salzburg. The album includes three works by Mozart: the unfinished Fantasia in D minor K 397, the famous Piano Concerto in D minor K 466, and the Fantasia in C minor K 475. They are presented in chronological order of composition and all three are among the relatively small number of works in Mozart’s vast output written in minor keys.
On this new Extended Edition, Grimaud adds another work from Valentin Silvestrov with the third movement of “3 Bagatelles, Op. 1”!

For this new release Sawhney has woven together four of his original compositions – The Fourth Window, Picturebook, Time and Breathing Light (performed by Hélène Grimaud) – with haunting remixes of Satie’s Gnossienne No.1, Debussy’s Clair de lune and Rachmaninov’s Vocalise, Op.34 No.14. By refining the essence of his collaboration with the French pianist, he has created the seven-track Memory Echo, set for release in digital-only format on 25 October 2019.
