A Spanish lo-fi garage rock girl-band from Madrid – a strange combination that sounds, on paper, as if it would never work. And yet, Hinds’ boundless energy, sense of humour and mischievous side have won over critics from New Musical Express and Pitchfork as well as the ears (and more than that in some cases) of The Black Keys, Mac DeMarco and Bobby Gillepsie from Primal Scream. In 2014, the four girls were the opening act for The Libertines and Black Lips. Their third album, The Prettiest Curse, remains faithful to their joyously rowdy garage rock style, stringing together ten tracks with a sweet and sultry nonchalance, like the crazy and fun-loving Just Like Kids (Miau), and Burn, a track full of anger but harmless and light-hearted at the same time. They often bring to mind Courtney Love’s band, Hole, but without the Californian diva’s dark, dramatic side. Hille Perl is one of the most successful artists of the viola da gamba and a brilliant and original musician who is not afraid to discover new worlds of sounds and musical territories. After experiencing as part of the rock band Santanas Lee, “Dead Poets”, Hille Perl and his daughter Martha Perl now play the electro-acoustic viola da gamba for the first time on a disk with the lutenist Lee Santana (who plays electric guitar).
The artists explore an original repertoire that includes compositions and improvisations of pieces of renaissance and baroque periods of Diego Ortiz, Marin Marais, Tobias Hume, Antoine Forqueray, Lee Santana himself and jazz legends such as Charlie Haden, among others.
A repertoire spanning seven centuries, providing new and spectacular sounds and instrumental colors, Hille Perl transforms the viola da gamba in a truly timeless instrument.

Milan Records will release the official soundtrack album for the biblical drama Mary Magdalene. The album features the film’s original music composed by Hildur Guðnadóttir (Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Strong Island) and Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, The Theory of Everything, Sicario, Prisoners). The soundtrack will be released digitally overseas, March 23. Mary Magdalene is directed by Garth Davis (Lion) and stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim. The movie tells the story of Mary, a young woman in search of a new way of living, who defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth and soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem. The drama was released in several European markets earlier this month. No word yet on a domestic release date.

Hildur Guðnadóttir has composed the music for the TV series Chernobyl, a co-production between HBO and Sky. Written by Craig Mazin, the five-part miniseries dramatizes the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history — the April 26, 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in then – Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic — and tells of the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster. The project is currently in production, with a cast including Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson and Jared Harris. Hildur has recently composed music for feature film Sicario: Day Of The Soldado, scheduled for release in June 2018, and collaborated with the late Jóhann Jóhannsson on the score for Garth Davis’s Mary Magdalene.

For good reason, she is still known to a wide public almost a thousand years after her death. The interest in Hildegard gained momentum after Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church. It is therefore to be welcomed that a young generation of musicians is exploring her works. Thanks to the Sequentia ensemble, Hildegard’s entrancing music has made it into the pop music charts since 1980. Initially, the aim was mainly to unveil the treasure of Hildegard’s compositions. As time has passed, not only has a great deal of knowledge about early music reading and performance practice been acquired, but also young musicians nowadays feel much more relaxed about developing their own views and interpretations of masterpieces, thus making valuable contributions from both a philological and musical standpoint.
