By the end of the 1970s, John Williams was already a legend among filmmakers and film-scoring buffs. But the success of Star Wars elevated him to something he probably could have scarcely imagined–bona fide pop-culture icon. Williams’s masterful score to the first Star Wars sequel (and the chapter many sci-fi fans cite as the series’ most dark, emotionally complex, and satisfying) fleshes out his original character themes with some new ones while painting compelling musical portraits of alien worlds as disparate as the ice planet Hoth and the swampy Dagobah. Notable are the menacing, Prokofiev-inspired “Imperial Theme (Darth Vader’s March)”; the noble “Yoda and the Force”; and Hoth’s “Battle” cues, which are some of the most dramatic action cues ever. This expanded edition also fleshes out the already familiar themes with new tracks that restore the score to its status as a grand galactic symphony. A richly illustrated booklet is included as well, helping listeners place each piece of music in its proper cinematic context. Of his four attempts at coloring George Lucas’s rich stellar saga, this remains Williams’s most consistent and compelling.

Originally released alongside the movie in 2005, the Episode III: Revenge of the Sith soundtrack features a score by five-time Oscar winner John Williams, who is also the composer and conductor of the score for each film in the 9 – chapter Star Wars saga. The score found on the Episode III soundtrack is decidedly darker than previous Star Wars prequel soundtracks, as the musical themes match the growing darkness woven into the story and the galaxy as the Empire consolidates its power at the conclusion of the prequel trilogy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will nonetheless be very familiar to any fan of the series, from the “Imperial March” to the main theme.

The “Return of the Jedi” score was recorded at the Abbey Road studios in January and February 1983 by the London Symphony Orchestra. The score won another Oscar nomination for John Williams. Because of the decrease of popularity for the vinyl format, Return of the Jedi, which has the longest score of the original trilogy, was only released on one LP instead of two like the scores for its predecessors, A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

On June 12, 1981, America met Indiana Jones when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg brought Raiders of the Lost Ark to theaters. If George Lucas were to say that he could make terrific entertainment out of Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book, at this point I’d be inclined to believe him – this point being just a few hours after seeing his Raiders of the Lost Ark. And if he wanted to bring along Steven Spielberg to direct, I’d believe him even more.

John Turville has put together a quintet that spans generations for this lively, self-assured release, with saxophonist Julian Arguelles, a mainstay of British jazz for over 30 years, joining younger musicians like drummer James Maddren and Robbie Robson on trumpet. Dave Whitford is on bass.

Turville sits at the centre of the record. The music is varied, reflecting Turville’s eclectic influences. The eleven tracks comprise three latin numbers, some meditative piano and some energetic ensemble playing, all infused with Turville’s sensitive piano playing.

He admits being inspired by John Taylor, who played on a couple of Arguelles’ recordings and to whom the CD is dedicated. Taylor’s influence is perhaps most evident on Ennerdale, on which Robson seems to evoke Taylor’s long time collaborator, Kenny Wheeler, too.

Back in 1970 the Dutch blues band John The Revelator won the prestigious Loosdrecht Jazz Concours. Record label Decca immediately offered them a recording contract, which resulted in the release of the legendary album “Wild Blues”. Now, approaching the 50th anniversary the band toying with the idea of releasing a box set to celebrate this special occasion. For the new album were invited the original Wild Blues guys from 1970: Charles van den Heuvel (piano), Fred Huissen (drums), Charles van der Steeg (tenor saxophone) and co-founder Jos de Wilde (slide). Even after all those years it felt like they never left the band. Most of the tracks were recorded live in one take, just like the good old “Wild Blues” days. The results can be heard on the new double album “50 & Beyond”.

John Taylor has several strings to his bow: he can play with a certain nonchalance or feverishly throw his notes in a hurry. The introspective pianist of “Insight” or “Rosslyn” – to quote recent records – is more talkative than usual. Vaguely Asian, a composition by Steve Swallow previously recorded by Taylor as a solo, loses some of its abstraction. The drums of Martin France order, channel, bring another light to the piece, a powerful and energetic drummer pushing the pianist into action. With Palle Danielsson to complete it, the rhythm section makes an act of presence. A round and attentive double bass, a sonorous and imposing drums put themselves at the service of the piano, answer and develop its sentences, ready at any time for dialogue, for exchange. The pianist can thus sing louder or indulge in a sensitive and delicate chatter, this somewhat ethereal aspect of his music found in Dry Stone, Fable and Intro to No Particular Song by Kenny Wheeler, three ballads from a recommended album.

Like every great instrument blower, John Surman has a sound you’ll recognize from the first breath. A sound which is as much fed by the culture of his British motherland (local folklore is one of the components of his music) as by the culture from other countries. The saxophonist and clarinetist has crossed paths with pianist Nelson Ayres—well-known by the fans of Brazilian jazz for his work with Airto Moreira and Milton Nascimento—during a tour in South America. And it’s in Oslo that he met the American vibraphonist Rob Waring, an expat in Scandinavia… With Invisible Threads, the three men gathered to perform a programme mostly composed of Surman’s original pieces, recorded in Oslo in July 2017, under the artistic supervision of Mr. ECM, Manfred Eicher. This program is like an ode to melodies that transcend dialects. Once again, John Surman unfolds very singular and beautiful narrations, parcels of internal joys that are almost melancholic, at the heart of which the improvisations are drunk like divine elixirs. This jazz is of course different. And as the saxophonist has been a resident at ECM for decades, he’s also one of the components of the sound of the label from Munich, now more than ever.

Vagn Holmboe’s three chamber symphonies span the period when the Danish com poser immersed himself in symphonic works; they are a fine demonstration of his preoccupation with the processes of nature and the idea of musical metamorphosis. Lapland Chamber Orchestra and its conductor John Storgårds focus on Vagn Holmboe’s clear musical expression in three major works that have never previously been recorded.

Like many serious musicians, John Stein was trying to find a way to reach his audience following the Covid-19 breakout. He had just released Watershed, a career- defining recording to mark his planned retirement from Berklee College of Music, where he was an acclaimed educator. Of course, as with live music in general, the tour in support of Watershed was scrapped. Prior to the pandemic, Whaling City Sound’s Neal Weiss had asked Stein to bring a trio for an outdoor September show he had booked in New Bedford. But when hell broke loose, Neal moved the show inside, to the New Bedford Art Museum, and made plans to broadcast it virtually, as well as record the audio and video. “Thanks to Neal’s ability to see other possibilities,” recalls Stein, “it would be the only public concert I played the entire year.”

John Smith is an acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist from Devon, England. He has played to audiences all over the world in living rooms, festival tents and sold-out concert halls. He is a genuine folksinger, an inquisitive truth-seeker, devoted song interpreter, and enchanting writer. A contributor and collaborator, John quickly and effortlessly earns the esteem of his comrades and heroes. He has opened for folk greats including John Martyn, Davy Graham and John Renbourn, who called John Smith the future of folk music. On the contemporary side, he has also opened for Iron and Wine, Tinariwen, and Ben Howard. He has guested with artists such as Jackson Browne, Jerry Douglas, Glen Hansard and Rodney Crowell. He has played guitar for artists such as David Gray, Lisa Hannigan, Joe Henry and Joan Baez. John described his reason for making Hummingbird ” Ever since my teenage epiphany at the altar of Folk Music, hearing Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn for the first time, I have been a devotee. The six strings of my guitar have granted me access to a sacred space between things, the unconscious interweaving sensations that allow us that gentle buzz on hearing a good folk song. It was with this in mind that I returned to Sam Lakeman s Somerset studio in March of 2018, two years since recording my previous album Headlong in that same place, to commit six of my favourite folk songs to tape, alongside one cover version and three original songs. The tracks quickly took on their own shape in Sam s able hands. I invited several good friends to join me in this process: Cara Dillon, John McCusker and Ben Nicholls.
