Legendary electronic music duo Orbital return in Spring 2023 with new album Optical Delusion, the Hartnoll brothers first studio album since 2018’s Monster’s Exist. Recorded in Orbital’s Brighton studio, Optical Delusion includes contributions from Sleaford Mods, Penelope Isles, Anna B Savage, The Little Pest, Dina Ipavic, Coppe, and perhaps most surprisingly, The Medieval Baebes. For the first single Orbital have joined forces with Sleaford Mods on their fabulous, furious new single “Dirty Rat” Featuring a searing vocal from Jason Williamson over kinetic, driving beats, “Dirty Rat” is Orbital at their most vital, still utterly relevant and pushing forward over 30 years since they broke through with their landmark single “Chime”. Think KLF or Underworld ‘Born Slippy’ – ‘Dirty Rat’ is a primal scream which crosses genres and generations.

There are melodies that accompany us for a lifetime. You twist and turn them, they can inspire, give hope or comfort. For Johann Sebastian Bach [1685-1750] it was a simple hymn: O head full of blood and wounds. He used this melody again and again, in various settings, in some of his greatest works such as the Christmas Oratorio or the St Matthew Passion. It runs through his life as a red thread, like this concept album: Ebenbild is a continuous narrative in which the boundaries between musical genres and between music and language are blurred.

Franz Schubert’s opera Die Zauberharfe (“The Magic Harp”) was premiered in 1820 at Theater an der Wien, Vienna, but was withdrawn after only eight performances due to in part devastating response from audience and critics (“nonsense and tedious”, “wretched trash”). The apparently poor libretto and detailed records of the staging were lost, only the music survived, with the overture later serving as the Overture to “Rosamunde” and becoming extremely popular.

June Christy – The Misty Miss Christy (1956/2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 37:53 minutes | 393 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © RevOla
Using Anita Day as starting point – but eschewing many of her scat-song histrionics in favor of pure tonal power and melancholic shading – June Christy honed her singing skills with Stan Kenton’s band before going solo in the ’50s. Christy’s relatively accessible vocal approach and blonde good looks eventually helped her gain success with such classic long players as Something Cool and The Misty Miss Christy. Less swinging than Something Cool, The Misty Miss Christy mostly stays on auto-stroll with a wealth of subtle and sophisticated orchestral charts. The jazz-pop environs come courtesy of longtime arranger Pete Rugolo and optimally frame the singer on highlights like “That’s All,” “I Didn’t Know About You,” and “Dearly Beloved.” With West Coast-style brass and reed accents gliding atop the lush strings, Christy also turns in fine renditions of Monk’s “Round Midnight” and Russ Freeman’s expressionistically torchy “The Wind.” Balancing out the predominant autumnal lull, Christy shows her swinging savvy on breezy gems like “Sing Something Simple,” “There’s No You,” and “A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening.” Both an essential Christy title and one of the best vocal albums from the ’50s. – Stephen Cook

British composer Julie Cooper presents her commercial album debut, composed during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This musical diary represents Cooper’s reflections on the continuous cycle of life as experienced so vividly by many during this time. This theme is explored most prominently in the central 4-movement work, the ‘Contemplation Suite’, featuring the soprano Grace Davidson, where the changing of light and dark in the day and its effect on our circadian rhythms is brought to light. The album opens with the title track ‘Continuum’, written and narrated by celebrated Bridgerton and Dr Who actor Adjoa Andoh, poignantly setting the tone and message for the rest of the album.
