The Cooker was recorded on September 29, 1957 and released in 1958 on Blue Note Records. Produced by Alfred Lion, it features classic tunes such as “A Night in Tunisia” and “Lover Man”.

The trumpeter, then just 19, teams up with baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones for a particularly strong set that is highlighted by a lengthy and fiery “Night in Tunisia,” “Lover Man” and a rapid rendition of “Just One of Those Things.” Morgan plays remarkably well for his age (already ranking just below Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis), making this an essential acquisition.

Classical music is full of child prodigies but they are somewhat rare in jazz. Lee Morgan was an exception, for he was a brilliant trumpeter while still a teenager. His musical genius is difficult to explain; but easy to hear. Lee Morgan emerged fully formed technically along with a crackling intensity and passion that was a joy to experience. By the time he recorded Candy in 1959, the 20-year old had already led five albums for Blue Note, and had logged valuable time with not only the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, but also as a member of (what some consider) the finest edition of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Candy is a unique item in Morgan’s history for it is the only quartet album that Morgan ever recorded. In fact, no other horns were needed! Candy features the trumpeter playing with beauty, fire, passion and a mature lyricism exceeding most musicians double his age. Joined by a rhythm section of young giants including pianist Sonny Clark, Morgan burns on the faster pieces but puts plenty of feeling into “All The Way,” the soulful “Since I Fell For You” and “Personality.” At 20, Lee Morgan was already a modern master and, from this point forward, considered one of the great trumpet men of jazz. Who said that youth was wasted on the young?

True fans know that Lee Konitz is one of the last giants in the history of jazz. A REAL giant who has always taken the genre in new directions, shaking up cool jazz just as easily as the free scene… At the age of 92, the saxophonist from Chicago still has that unique alto sound that offered an alternative to the Parker revolution a long, long time ago. For the past thirty years, the saxophonist, composer and arranger Ohad Talmor has been a close friend of Konitz. Here, the two men resurrect the famous Lee Konitz Nonet, an ensemble mixing brass, wind, percussion and strings. The nonet’s origins lie in Lee Konitz’s early work for Miles Davis’ legendary album Birth of the Cool. With Old Songs New, released in November 2019, Talmor wanted to pay tribute to the sound of the 50s radio orchestras that Lee Konitz so loved. He also wanted the saxophonist to record rare and even unreleased pieces from his repertoire, particularly the works popularized by Frank Sinatra (In the Wee Small Hours), a cornerstone of Konitz’s lyrical playing. Above all, the Lee Konitz Nonet provides the perfect setting to bring the leader’s phrasing to the fore, designed to produce a deeper, darker atmosphere that counterbalances the alto sax’s bright sound. – Marc Zisman

A duo album of the highest caliber! US Alto saxophonist Lee Konitz’s career encompasses the beginnings of bebop, the Birth of the Cool, mainstream as well as the Avant-garde. Konitz has recorded with virtually every major modern jazz figure of the last 60 years, including Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, and Brad Mehldau. French pianist Martial Solal has been a major musical voice since the 1950’s. The two have had a rich musical relationship since the 1960’s. This live 1980 album was conceived in part as a “Lennie Tristano Memorial”. Lee’s studies and playing experience with the iconoclastic pianist left an indelible imprint on the saxophonist’s concept, and Solal is the perfect partner for the project. A free-wheeling interpretation of the standard Invitation is followed by No. 317 East 32nd Street Tristano’s Manhattan address. Martial and Lee play the piece as if they were at one of Lennie’s open-ended sessions, as they experiment with the musical possibilities. The two take a deep bow to the master in a heart-felt A Ballad for Lennie, and Improvisation No.53 has Lee and Martial in an inspired duo hovering around the changes to All the Things You Are. It’s everything but Just A Blues, as the two explore by-tonal pathways. They go on to scope out Star Eyes in a spacey rendition. Noblesse Oblige sounds suspiciously like Cherokee, the composition Charlie Parker morphed into a defining jazz standard. The two play it with the appropriate virtuosic passion. Konitz’s Subconscious-Lee is a bop era classic that transcends the period – an example of Tristano’s innovative influence. An exhilarating exploratory session by two masters of the music.

Leon Konitz (October 13, 1927 – April 15, 2020) was an American composer and alto saxophonist.

He performed successfully in a wide range of jazz styles, including bebop, cool jazz, and avant-garde jazz. Konitz’s association with the cool jazz movement of the 1940s and 1950s includes participation in Miles Davis’s Birth of the Cool sessions and his work with pianist Lennie Tristano. He was one of relatively few alto saxophonists of this era to retain a distinctive style, when Charlie Parker exerted a massive influence. Like other students of Tristano, Konitz improvised long, melodic lines with the rhythmic interest coming from odd accents, or odd note groupings suggestive of the imposition of one time signature over another. Other saxophonists were strongly influenced by Konitz, such as Paul Desmond and Art Pepper.

He died during the COVID-19 pandemic due to complications brought on by the disease.

Laurent Coulondre doesn’t just play keyboards, he merges with them. The young Frenchman says that he immerses himself totally into the “deep world” of his keyboards. This world can sometimes resemble an Escher-like maze: just when you think you’ve found the way out, you find yourself somewhere else. Coulondre’s music is funky and would not be out of place on Miles Davis’ On The Corner — yet it never sounds dated — if only because of the youthful energy of his playing. Coulondre’s whole body swings with the music as he loses himself in thrilling solos. In his homeland he is a popular sideman and he has played on the albums of trumpeter Nicolas Folmer and others. Coulondre’s latest album Gravity Zero was released this year. On it you can hear the exuberance that he will undoubtedly bring to the stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971) nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an inventive trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance. With his instantly-recognizable gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also skilled at scat singing (vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics). Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong’s influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general. Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to “cross over”, whose skin-color was secondary to his music in an America that was severely racially divided. He rarely publicly politicized his race, often to the dismay of fellow African-Americans, but took a well-publicized stand for desegregation during the Little Rock Crisis. His artistry and personality allowed him socially acceptable access to the upper echelons of American society that were highly restricted for a black man.

This 1958 release marks a period in Lou Donaldson’s development prior to a stylistic shift away from bop and toward a stronger rhythm and blues emphasis. Three uptempo tunes here are pure bebop; the remaining number is a medium blues piece, quite characteristic of the hard bop period. The front line on this set includes Donald Byrd and Curtis Fuller with the rhythm section of Sonny Clark, George Joyner and Art Taylor.

This release focuses primarily on Brazilian standards performed by the Konitz sextet, except for the Brazilian-flavored “Lunasea”, written by Peggy Stern, which features her high school choir. “Berimbau” is swinging and percussive, while the well-known “Insensatez” takes many unexpected turns. “Triste” is also a familiar theme played with relish. Vocalist Adela Dalto makes a strong impression with her guest spot on “A Felicidade”. Konitz’s duet with the phenomenal acoustic guitarist Romero Lubambo on “Manha De Carnaval” is breathtaking.
