Fall 1989: The Long Island Sound celebrates the storied East Coast 1989 run which featured acoustic duo Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman setting the stage for two nightly sets from the Jerry Garcia Band.

On August 29, 1987 Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia led both the Jerry Garcia Band and the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band for performances at French’s Camp On The Eel River in Piercy, California. Garcia would bring the JGB back to the scenic venue on June 10, 1989 and on August 10, 1991 – now get ready for the spectacular Electric on the Eel set showcasing the Jerry Garcia Band’s electric sets from 8/29/1987, 6/10/1989, and 8/10/1991. The collection features several unreleased rarities including the seldom performed “See What Love Can Do”, “Twilight”, “Lazy Bones”, and “I Hope It Won’t Be This Way Always.” Other rarities from the release include “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”, “Struggling Man”, “Lay Down Sally” and “You Never Can Tell [C’est La Vie]”.

The third Garcia/Grisman album, this one concentrating on the traditional ‘folk’ song aspect of their repertoire.
Shady Grove Deluxe Edition showcases the folk songs and ballads that were performed and recorded by Jerry & David during the early 1990’s. The recording includes their popular version of the title track as well as “Stealin,” “Jackaroo” and “The Sweet Sunny South.” Five tracks are duets, two of which feature Jerry playing 5-string banjo, with David playing guitar or 5-string banjo; five tracks feature the Garcia/Grisman band with DGQ members Joe Craven and Jim Kerwin, and three tracks are trios with special guests Bryan Bowers (autoharp), Matt Eakle (flute) and Will Scarlett (harmonica).

Volume Six showcases Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders’ July 5th, 1973 performance at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, CA. Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson just five days prior to the seminal performances celebrated on the Live at the Keystone series, GarciaLive Volume Six highlights a particularly adventurous evening at the Lion’s Share, a 200 capacity club known for its vibrant music scene which drew regulars like Janis Joplin, Phil Lesh, Van Morrison, and many others. The club’s intimacy can be felt throughout the recordings as the band, rounded out by John Kahn on bass and drummer Bill Vitt, frequently launch into extended improvisations fueled by the exchange of energy with the audience. The blistering “She’s Got Charisma” -> “That’s Alright, Mama”, which clocks in at over 31 minutes long, “starts off innocently in familiar blues territory, but very quickly deconstructs into fragmentation and exploration, defying both gravity and expectation at the same time” as writer Benjy Eisen eloquently describes in the releases’ liner note essay. The presence of an unidentified guest on trumpet during the band’s second set adds to the freedom and looseness found within the performance. The guest trumpeter is felt most during extended takes on “My Funny Valentine” and “Merl’s Tune,” both easy highlights of the entire evening.

GarciaLive Volume 15: May 21st, 1971 Keystone Korner finds Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders in the middle of their first multi-night run at the vaulted San Francisco club. The previously uncirculated two-set performance was mixed and mastered from 4-track analog reels. With John Kahn thought to be on another gig in Southern California, Garcia, Saunders, and drummer Bill Vitt shift to an organ trio configuration with Merl’s feet ably rounding out the rhythm section. Future Garcia/Saunders & Legion of Mary bandmate Martin Fierro joins the fold, his first known performance with Garcia/Saunders, on 5 songs pushing the group to dizzying heights. The show opening “Man-Child” sets the tone with a 17-minute heavily improvised, funky jazz-fusion romp, while the self-described “Keystone Korner Jam” is (as best we can tell) a completely improvised adventure that takes the group into uncharted territory. Set Two offers more of the same with an incendiary take on Saunders’s original “Save Mother Earth” that tips the 25-minute mark to open the set. The highlight of the night, however, may be the only known Garcia-led performance of David Crosby’s “The Wall Song.” While Saunders is credited with teaching Garcia “regular, straight” music, there’s certainly no evidence of anything mundane here.

Been All Around This World, culled from over 40 Garcia/Grisman recording sessions, captures some of the finest and most unexpected moments from these influential figures in American music. Saving the best for last, producer Grisman assembled an engaging program that features songs never heard sung by Garcia before.
This Deluxe edition in Hi-Definition sound, includes four previously unissued tracks in an expose of the acoustic side that Jerry Garcia explored with his longtime friend David Grisman, reflecting the many musical idioms that remained deep, common threads of their relationship. Country roots abound in the title track, George Jones’ “Take Me,” Webb Pierce’s “I Ain’t Never,” Jimmy Martin’s “Drink Up And Go Home” and the previously unissued classic “Long Black Veil.” Their mutual love of traditional folk and blues is evident in Merle Travis’ “Dark As A Dungeon,” “Nine Pound Hammer” and “I’m Troubled.” Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest” is given an endearing treatment with Garcia’s smooth-as-brandy vocals intertwining with Grisman’s light-as-rain mandolin textures. Their passion for soul music is displayed on James Brown’s “I’ll Go Crazy,” an impromptu take that captures the pure spontaneity these two often regaled in.
Accompanying Garcia and Grisman is their rhythm section of Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (percussion/fiddle) along with Matt Eakle (flute), all members of the David Grisman Quintet. Other musicians featured are John Kahn, George Marsh and Sally Van Meter on an alternate rendition of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel #9” from Jerry’s last recording session.

Clarinetist Jerry Chae, the current professor of Korea National University of Arts, was the principal clarinetist of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra until 2012. Prior to these positions he served as tenured principal clarinetist of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and professor of YeungNam University in Korea. Mr. Chae studied with Ricardo Morales at The Juilliard School in New York City where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

Gerald Byrd became known as Jerry Byrd, was the legendary Hawaiian steel guitar master. In fact, his plaque in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame proclaims him to be “The Master of Touch and Tone”. Although his initial interest was Hawaiian music much of his work was Country. He was inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 1978 as # 1 and his Rickenbacker lap steel is housed at the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1950, Jerry did his first solo steel guitar recordings under his name. Before he finished, he had recorded over 280 sides and had 25 albums released on eight labels. This is his 1966’s album, recorded for the Monument label.

A fine, high-powered tenor saxophonist with a tone influenced by John Coltrane, a mastery of chord changes, and a strong musical imagination, Jerry Bergonzi has long had an underground following in the Boston area. He started on clarinet when he was eight, switching to alto at 12, and finally to tenor two years later. Bergonzi was inspired early on by Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, and Hank Mobley. He attended Lowell University and after graduation played electric bass in local bands behind singers and strippers, saving up enough money to move to New York in 1972. After struggling in the Big Apple for seven years and gaining some recognition as a member of Two Generations of Brubeck and of the Dave Brubeck Quartet (with whom he appeared on several Concord albums during 1979-1981), Bergonzi moved back to Boston in 1981, where he developed a strong career as both a tenorman and as an educator.
