John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1912 or 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. The son of a sharecropper, he rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi Hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930s–1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie. Hooker was ranked 35 in Rolling Stone’s 2015 list of 100 greatest guitarists.

When this two-LP set was initially released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to its R&B roots, sporting slightly revised personnel. In the spring of the previous year, Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass) and Harvey Mandel (guitar) simultaneously accepted invitations to join John Mayall’s concurrent incarnation of the Bluesbreakers. This marked the return of Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar) and the incorporation of Antonio “Tony” de la Barreda (bass), a highly skilled constituent of Aldolfo de la Parra (drums). Sadly, it would also be the final effort to include co-founder Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. Hooker ‘n Heat (1971) is a low-key affair split between unaccompanied solo John Lee Hooker (guitar/vocals) tunes, collaborations between Hooker and Wilson (piano/guitar/harmonica), as well as five full-blown confabs between Hooker and Heat. The first platter focuses on Hooker’s looser entries that vacillate from the relatively uninspired ramblings of “Send Me Your Pillow” and “Drifter” to the essential and guttural “Feelin’ Is Gone” or spirited “Bottle Up and Go.” The latter being among those with Wilson on piano. Perhaps the best of the batch is the lengthy seven-minute-plus “World Today,” which is languid and poignant talking blues, with Hooker lamenting the concurrent state of affairs around the globe. “I Got My Eyes on You” is an unabashed derivative of Hooker’s classic “Dimples,” with the title changed for what were most likely legal rather than artistic concerns. That said, the readings of the seminal “Burning Hell” and “Bottle Up and Go” kept their familiar monikers intact. The full-fledged collaborations shine as both parties unleash some of their finest respective work. While Canned Heat get top bill – probably as it was the group’s record company that sprung for Hooker ‘n Heat – make no mistake, as Hooker steers the combo with the same gritty and percussive guitar leads that have become his trademark. The epic “Boogie Chillen No. 2” stretches over 11 and a half minutes and is full of the same swagger as the original, with the support of Canned Heat igniting the verses and simmering on the subsequent instrumental breaks with all killer and no filler. The 2002 two-CD pressing by the French Magic Records label is augmented with “It’s All Right,” with a single edit of “Whiskey and Wimmen.”

This has well-presented variations of old-style blues, from acoustic (“Dirty Groundhog”), to slow burners (“Elem”), to Chicago/Muddy Waters style (“Who’s Using Who”). Duke Robillard graciously acts in his role as a team player, although he stands out with a hip solo on “If That’s What Pleases Her.” Portney’s harp on “She’s Wonderful” is slow and easy, reminiscent of a hot summer’s day in the country.

Joe Beard – Dealin’ (2000) SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Influenced by blues greats such as Muddy Waters & John Lee Hooker, Joe Beard exhibits genuine talent on Dealin’. Beard has a respectable fan base mostly concentrated on the East and West coasts of USA.

In the blues world it’s OK to be a late bloomer, and when it came to recording, Joe Beard was exactly that. The charismatic singer/guitarist, whose influences range from Jimmy Reed to Lightnin’ Hopkins, worked “day gigs” when his kids were growing up and didn’t start to build a catalog until he was in his fifties. Blues lovers who heard Beard’s AudioQuest dates of the ’90s found themselves saying, “Hey, this guy is very talented; why haven’t I heard of him until now?” And, of course, the answer to that question is that his nine-to-fives and family life had kept him from being a full-time bluesman. But when his kids reached adulthood, the Mississippi native turned Rochester, NY, resident had more time to devote to music. Recorded in April 2000 (when he was 62), Dealin’ is Beard’s third CD for AudioQuest and underscores his ability to handle a variety of electric blues styles. Beard’s appreciation of Reed and the Chicago blues is evident on gutsy, rough-and-tumble tracks like “Give Me Up and Let Me Go,” “My Eyes Keep Me in Trouble,” and “The Bitter Seed,” a Jimmy Reed classic. Like Reed, Beard favors a gentle and laid-back style of singing but still has plenty of grit and doesn’t mind having a tough, hard-driving band behind him. Meanwhile, “Holding a Losing Hand” and “If I Get Lucky” (both Beard originals) go for the sort of moody, shadowy, haunting ambiance that often worked so well for Hopkins and John Lee Hooker. This isn’t to say that Beard is going out of his way to emulate Reed, Hopkins, Hooker, or anyone else. Dealin’ shows who some of his influences are, but it also reminds you that Beard is an appealing bluesman in his own right.

Joan Baez is an American folk singer, songwriter, musician, and activist, whose contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice. “Recently” was her first album of new material issued in the US in eight years. As she had done during the 1960s for Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin and Richard Farina, among others, Baez lent her voice to many of the songwriters of the day, in this case Mark Knopfler, U2, Peter Gabriel, and Johnny Clegg and found herself straddling a line between attempting to further connect with young audiences, while reintroducing herself to her established listeners, after such a long absence.

Rachel Podger & Brecon Baroque – J. S. Bach: Violin Concertos (2010) MCH SACD ISO

Rachel Podger & Brecon Baroque – J. S. Bach: Violin Concertos (2010)
Genre: Classical | SACD ISO: DST 2.0, 5.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Artwork | 2.82 GB
Label: Channel Classics | Release Year: 2010

For those who already appreciate Rachel Podger’s unique brand of magic I’ll just say that this return to recorded Bach is lovely and all that one could hope for. All that one looks for is here, and there is more.
For those who are not familiar with Rachel Podger, she is a unique voice among violinists. She has absorbed the principles of late Baroque performance practice and made them a part of herself, so that the articulation and inflection of that rhetorical approach to music flows from her as a natural idiom of expression. But this is only half of the picture. She also excels at communicating the logic and coherence of the music. She’s not so busy being expressive that she forgets where she is. She can turn a melodic corner with an elastic flourish that makes one catch one’s breath, but she never goes off the road or gets lost. Her style is an intensifying balance between opposing forces: florid yet subtle, expressive yet ordered, emotional yet objective.
On this recording there is something of an added richness in her expression, and if anything an even stronger sense of relating each moment to the whole, creating an enlarged sense of integrity and structure in the music even while she executes ravishing rhetorical details with an agile liquid flow. Then again perhaps it is just that the intersection of Ms. Podger and Bach always magifies her virtues, and the present CD is merely the first opportunity we have had to clearly hear her rendition of a Bach concerto. These recordings have some of the energy and wit of a live performance–there is a strong feeling that the performers know each other well and are having fun…

The trashed hotel room and communal living depicted on the cover of the J. Geils Band’s sophomore album tell you all you need know about the music, spirit, and energy spilling from within The Morning After. Shot through with raw, lean Rock n’ Roll sparked by juke-joint blues and loose rhythms, the 1971 set comes on like the most fun, party-still-raging hangover any group in the 70s enjoyed. And now it rolls with an abandon that takes you inside the sweaty, smoky roadhouses and wall-to-wall-packed clubs the group dominated in its heyday. Spirited, Blues-Driven Rock n’ Roll Comes on Like a Never-Ending Party: features ace performances by harmonica player Magic Dick Salwitz and vocalist Peter Wolf.

Mastered from the original master tapes and strictly limited to 2,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity’s hybrid SACD achieves a sonic acumen that brings you face-to-face with the sextet’s white-hot instrumental prowess and magnetic personalities. It’s always been difficult to single out just one member of the band given the cohesive bluster the ensemble achieves as a whole, but this collectible audiophile edition allows you to do just that if you so choose, by way of superb imaging and separation. As for the band’s trademark dynamics? Here, they feel like they’re on the verge of exploding.

Their works are heard here as world premiere recordings. Tonal beauty and textual comprehensibility, used in the service of expression and depth of interpretation, are obvious instruments for voicemade. “A new hope of German jazz,” recognized mdr Kultur, to which Deutschlandfunk added: “a band that will take off like a rocket.” American Downbeat heard “excitement and enthusiasm” in Vincent Meissner’s 2021 debut album “Bewegtes Feld,” produced by his mentor Michael Wollny. The pianist was only twenty at the time and already decorated with prizes. Much praise, much honor … Yet his young acoustic piano trio with bassist Josef Zeimetz and drummer Henri Reichmann had hardly had the opportunity to present and develop the rich material composed entirely by the band leader live.
