A pupil of Tchaikovsky, who called him the ‘Russian Bach’, Sergey Taneyev is best known today for his four symphonies, although he also composed a sizeable body of chamber music, including nine complete String Quartets. Quartet No. 9 is a memorably melodic work, while the beautifully crafted Quartet No. 6, his last completed quartet, is rather more austere, though marked by a playful Jig, and even more masterful in construction.

Johan Agrell was in many ways a traveler between the worlds: in Uppsala, the Swede’s great talent was recognized by the Hessian envoy, which resulted in Agrell being summoned to a court near Kassel in Germany. He later went as municipal chapel-master to Nuremberg.

Musically, Agrell was a brilliant Baroque composer in whose works many of the new early Classical trends were anticipated. This CD thus continues the series of AEOLUS releases that feature the orchestral music of this exciting period, a series that has already very successfully presented works by Fasch, Hertel, and Molter.
The Helsinki Baroque Orchestra is a shining star of Finland’s musical life. The young musicians around the harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen appear year after year throughout Europe. Further releases on AEOLUS are in preparation.

The Swedish recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin has demonstrated his remarkable versatility on some thirty recordings on BIS, ranging from a nine-disc set with 17th-century composer Jacob van Eyck’s complete Der Fluyten Lust-hof to the recent Rock that Flute, with music for recorder and strings written in 2013 by the Dutch composer Chiel Meijering. During a recording career that stretches over almost 30 years, Laurin keeps returning to one particular set of works, however: the concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Three of the works (the Concertos RV 441, 443 and 444) included on his latest release he has recorded more than once before, with ensembles such as the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble, Bach Collegium Japan and Arte dei Suonatori. For his latest ‘take’ on these favourites Laurin has joined forces with the young and vibrant Norwegian string ensemble 1B1 (shorthand for Ensemble Bjergsted 1). As he explains in his own liner notes for the present disc, he was inspired by his work on transcribing and performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: ‘A close reading of RV441 and RV443–445 reveals great similarities between these works and The Four Seasons: sudden changes of moods, turbulent emotions, burlesque whims mixed with sublime beauty and elegance… My aim here is to explore the recorder concertos with the same freedom and spontaneity that characterize the modern-day approach to the Seasons.’ Laurin’s recording of the Seasons has been called ‘undoubtedly the best transcription to date’ (Diapason) and ‘never hackneyed, but instead invigoratingly fresh and vibrant’ (Clarino), verdicts which can only fuel the expectations concerning this his latest version of the recorder concertos.

Around 1700, Northern Europe was deluged with Italian violin music and players. Engraving made printed music cheaper, and economic collapse throughout the Italian peninsula made the more stable north look like the ‘Promised Land’. The stage was set for a musical invasion by a host of indigent virtuosi and stay-at-home composers, all of whose surnames seemingly end with the letter ‘i’.

In music, we have the three great Bs – Bach, Beethoven and Brahms; and among violin concerti, there are the three great D Majors – the works in that key by Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Like its two companions, the third of these concerti requires a true virtuoso to reveal it in its proper light. Fortunately, such a virtuoso is Tossy Spivakovsky. Fortunately, too, Spivakovsky has the benefit of today’s finest recorded sound – Everest sound.

Two great artists at the peak of their powers, the soprano Dorothea Röschmann and the pianist Dame Mitsuko Uchida perform songs by Schumann (Liederkreis, Op 39 and Frauenliebe und Leben) and Alban Berg (Seven Early Songs).

The album features the three great cycles on the subject of love and life and Schumann’s great love for Clara Wieck is at the heart of Liederkreis, songs he described in a letter to her as his “most romantic music ever, with much of you in it.”

The artists toured this programme extensively and this performance was captured live at Wigmore Hall. The reviews were glowing and this programme of songs about love touched the hearts of the audience wherever it was performed.
