Blacklips Bar: Androgyns and Deviants — Industrial Romance for Bruised and Battered Angels, 1992–1995 is a compilation combining original recordings and select DJ tracks from the vaults of Blacklips Performance Cult, a collective of underground performers, artists and drag queens who took to NYC’s Pyramid Club stage every Monday night at 1 am to perform original plays. The broad spectrum of emotional expression, ferocity, humor and transgression evident in these collected recordings are a further indication of the group’s oeuvre.

Eugene Zádor was an established composer by the time he moved from Europe to the United States in 1939 where he worked as a film composer. Many of the works on this album exhibit Zádor’s finest traits, blending neo-Classicism and neo-Romanticism with expert orchestration and rhythmic verve, and a dedication to tonality liberally peppered with gentle dissonance. The Chamber Concerto was composed while he was still in Vienna, and the Suite for Horn, Strings and Percussion only received its premiere after Zádor’s death. The programme concludes with spectacular off-stage effects and a joyous affirmation of life in Celebration Music.

Yuja Wang gives a dazzling solo performance in the world premiere recording of a major new work specially written for her by her friend Teddy Abrams. Although originally conceived as a short companion composition to Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, Abrams’ ‘Piano Concerto’ blossomed to become a 35-minute standalone showpiece. Celebrating the richness of America’s musical culture and the sheer depth and breadth of Yuja Wang’s virtuosity, the work now features on Yuja Wang ‘The American Project’. Also included on the album is ‘You Come Here Often?’, created for the star pianist by another close friend, Michael Tilson Thomas. Both were recorded live with the Louisville Orchestra, conducted by Abrams, its Music Director. Abrams received his first conducting lessons from Michael Tilson Thomas in San Francisco at the age of eleven. The conductor, himself a fine pianist and distinguished composer, became his long-term mentor and friend. Tilson Thomas also encouraged Yuja Wang at the start of her career. He enlarged her stock of encores in 2016 with ‘You Come Here Often?’, which serves as the opening track of her new album.

London-based artist and musician Wil Bolton, known for several fine release of predominantly sound-based artworks with eye and vision, this time joins up with Joseph Auer ( born in the USA. educated at the UK) for a intruiging and fascinating set of electronic minimalism, driven by melodic loops and sequences floating on a bed of droning ambient. ‘Meridian’ is a fusion of two sessions and two musical impressions. Both sessions were recorded at Wil’s London studio in 2017, but also took inspiration from Joseph’s time spent in both Tokyo and Barcelona. For the first session, Joseph brought some compositional frameworks from his time living in Tokyo which took inspiration from Japanese electronic minimalism (Hiroshi Kobayashi, Hiroshi Yoshimua, Inoyama Land and Geinoh Yamashirogumi among others).The second session was recorded on Joseph’s return from seven months living in Barcelona, during which he researched more into experimental electronics from Alvin Curran, Robert Ashley, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Luc Ferrari, Daniel Blinkhorn and Eugenio Muñoz in particular, while also working 3 – 4 hours a day on composition.For these sessions, Joseph brought a Yamaha FM synthesizer keyboard and a hardware effects unit, creating crystalline digital tones and rhythmic, minimalist sequences. Wil played electric guitar, analogue synths, bells and effects pedals, improvising fuzzy, fragmented melodic loops and droning ambient textures.These live multi-tracked recording sessions resulted in several lengthy pieces which were later edited and mixed down by Wil to form the final five album tracks. Joseph provided the album and track titles and they manifest a deep connection with the city of Barcelona: “The titles reflect impressions of specific geographical areas of the city along with their underlying cultural aspects. It is no accident that these titles are in Catalan, with a nod to Wenzhounese (the language spoken in the region where the majority of the Chinese in Barcelona come from and whose industrial enclave in Sant Adria De Besos I spent a lot of time wandering through). The album title is a nod to the way that the Avenue Meridiana – which it seems I spent a lifetime walking along – acted to me as a dividing middle point going into Barcelona city centre from the vantage point of living in Torre Baró.”

White Water is a one-album project and essentially the third attempt at a band by the members of the psychedelic Dick Damone band and Blue Jays. This time around, the mix of funk and blues is accented by more mid-70’s AOR, and it works. With a pretty nice open drum break to start the beginning of Side 2, I’d say this record is an underrated gem and definitely worth checking out.”
