Imagine being forced from your home. Imagine being sent to a prison camp with no trial, and no promise of release. Imagine all this happened simply because of the language you speak, the shade of your skin, or the roots of your family tree. For over 120,000 Japanese-Americans this was a reality during World War II. It’s a reality that Kishi Bashi seeks to reckon with on his latest release Omoiyari.

Kishi Bashi’s Emigrant EP is a lush bluegrass-inspired album referencing the brutal history and harsh climate of the American West. Arranged and recorded over the last year, Emigrant serves as a time capsule of the 2020 condition as it meditates on the anxieties of the COVID-19 pandemic, the comforts of nature, the pains of resource-fueled conflicts, and the resiliency that emerges from struggle. In grappling with history and stepping into personal identity, Kishi Bashi’s Emigrant is steeped in the past while it looks to the future.

Victoria, BC-based songwriter Kirsten Ludwig has a couple of albums under her belt, and she’s signed to Oscar St. Records for LP number three. The tune is a yearning, elegant ballad in which reverb-shrouded electric guitars and patient rhythms set the backdrop for Ludwig’s sighing melodies and wistful lyrics. It’s a dream-pop approach to alt-folk songcraft.

“Something I Wanted to Know” is about the nostalgia of a time when I felt like I was able to fully receive kindness and love, and the memory of not being, seemingly, completely poisoned by love in every sense. Underneath it all, I think the longing of the actual song does not come from the superficial “want” of a new partner, but the undeniable need of finding out how to treat myself with the kindness I had been looking for almost all of my life.

Kirsten Flagstad – Wagner: Tristan und Isolde (1953/2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Wilhelm Furtw”angler’s 1952 EMI recording of Tristan und Isolde with the Philharmonia Orchestra is a gold standard among recordings of the opera. The integrality of his vision and his command of the opera’s large structural elements make this a version that is widely admired by listeners who love the opera. Although his reading is never rushed, and is notable for its moments of sensuous languor, for the most part, the opera has rarely sounded so impetuously and freshly imagined. The opening of the Prelude is a marvel; its primal rawness perfectly sets the stage for the searing drama. Isolde’s Act I monologue and Marke’s Act II monologue lack energy and are Furtw”angler’s least effective moments, but they are more than compensated for by the blazing intensity of the “Love Duet,” the anguish of Tristan’s yearning in the third act, and the ecstatic resolution of the” Liebestod.” Kirsten Flagstad made the recording late in her career, when she was in her late 50s, and while her voice doesn’t have the youthful bloom ideal for Isolde, her vulnerability and tenderness, her subtle musicality, and the immense warmth and dignity of her exceptional voice make her an Isolde for the ages. Ludwig Suthaus never had the weight of a heldentenor of the first water, but his is an entirely respectable Tristan, fully capable of negotiating the staggering demands of the role, and his characterization is musically intelligent and nuanced. Blanche Thebom’s Brang”ane is radiant, and her warning in Act II is one of the highlights of the recording. The young Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is a vocally powerful Kurwenal, and his characterization is sharply etched. Josef Greindl sounds underpowered as King Marke, and comes across as more pathetic than really grief-stricken. The members of the Philharmonia Orchestra, who beautifully follow Furtw”angler’s lead in their impassioned playing, are also stars of the performance. The variety of colors they produce, from the practically Medieval sound of the opening notes of the Prelude to the lushly Romantic passion and warmth of the second act, is remarkable. The sound is vintage, but is full, clear, and vivid. The general high level of the performance, particularly the outstanding work of Flagstad, Furtw”angler, and the Philharmonia Orchestra, make this a version of the opera that should be of strong interest to any Wagnerian.

Legendary Crowbar frontman Kirk Windstein goes solo on Dream In Motion. Making his solo debut a whopping 29 years after his first album with Crowbar, New Orleans sludge legend Kirk Windstein remains a force to be reckoned with, even when standing alone. Like fellow riff overlord Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed), releasing a record under his own name has led Kirk to dial back the heaviness in favour of melody and reflection.

This album is an off-the-wall project that was a big success. Kirk Lightsey and Harold Danko perform duo piano versions of 11 Wayne Shorter compositions. They dig into such Shorter tunes as “Ana Maria,” “Pinocchio,” “Lester Left Town,” “Nefertiti,” and quite a few obscurities, bringing out unexpected beauty during their very different interpretations of the complex and often haunting material.sacred and the secular, into one of the most unusual and inventive projects of Knuffke’s career”.

Two extraordinary talents from the two totally independent discipline of art forms are meeting here to create a genuinely unique musical experience for us. Kirk Knuffke one of the most prominent of jazz cornetist and New York’s up and coming operatic baritone singer Steven Herring present here, to quote the liner-note author Neil Tesser, “an album that juxtaposes conservatory and nightclub, improvisation and spoken word, the sacred and the secular, into one of the most unusual and inventive projects of Knuffke’s career”.

Startling inventiveness, moment-to-moment creative sparks, and alchemical reactivity combine in always surprising ways throughout the work of cornetist and composer Kirk Knuffke. It may come as something of a surprise, then, to realize that he’s never released a live date as a leader. While Knuffke’s been an essential component of many a collaborator’s concert albums and of course logged countless hours on stages around the road, his own catalogue has been almost wholly crafted in recording studios.

The eagerly awaited 3rd volume in the critically acclaimed Prokofiev Symphony cycle from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The original version of the 4th, probably the least performed of the seven is coupled with the 5th, arguably the most performed. The 4th is based on material from the ballet ‘The Prodigal Son’. The symphony was commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky to mark the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The 5th dates from 1944 at the height of the Russian struggle against the Nazi invasion. Although considered a wartime work, the overall mood is one of optimism. Yet again music from another project was used to good effect in a Prokofiev symphony. The powerful slow movement draws on music composed in 1936 and intended for an abortive film of Pushkin’s ‘Queen of Spades’.
