Kid Ory was one of the great New Orleans pioneers, an early trombonist who virtually defined the “tailgate” style (using his horn to play rhythmic bass lines in the front line behind the trumpet and clarinet) and who was fortunate enough to last through the lean years so he could make a major comeback in the mid-’40s. Originally a banjoist, Ory soon switched to trombone and by 1911 was leading a popular band in New Orleans. Among his trumpeters during the next eight years were Mutt Carey, King Oliver and a young Louis Armstrong and his clarinetists included Johnny Dodds, Sidney Bechet, and Jimmie Noone. In 1919, Ory moved to California and in 1922 (possibly 1921) recorded the first two titles by a Black New Orleans jazz band (“Ory’s Creole Trombone” and “Society Blues”) under the band title of Spike’s Seven Pods of Pepper Orchestra. In 1925 he moved to Chicago, played regularly with King Oliver, and recorded many classic sides with Oliver, Louis Armstrong (in his Hot Five and Seven), and Jelly Roll Morton, among others.

RCA’s “golden age” was more like a “golden minute” – in a scant period, roughly from 1958 to 1963, the beginning of the stereo era – pure vacuum tube amplification helped produce recordings demonstrating unparalleled fidelity and warmth, lifelike presence and midband illumination.

One of the best sounding recordings in the Living Stereo catalog finds Kiril Kondrashin conducting the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra in performances of Aram Khachaturian’s The Masquerade Suite and Dmitri Kabalevsky’s The Comedians. Produced by Richard Mohr and recorded by Lewis Layton.

On Friday, January 24, 1975, legendary composer, pianist, soprano saxophonist and bandleader Keith Jarrett gave his famous, freely improvised solo concert at the Köln Opera House in Germany on a Bösendorfer baby grand. The captivating four-part set clocked in at 67 minutes and has since become the bestselling solo piano and jazz solo record of all time.

“Again and again it’s like stepping onstage naked. The most important thing in a solo concert is the first note I play, or the first four notes. If they have enough tension, the rest of the concert follows almost as a matter of course. Solo concerts are about the most revealing psychological self-analysis imaginable.” –Keith Jarrett

“From the glistening, patiently developed opening melody, through sustained passages of roaring riffs and folksy, country-song exuberance, the pianist is utterly inside his ongoing vision of the performance’s developing shape – a fusion of the freshness of an improvisation with the symmetries of a composition that’s central to the album’s communicative power.” –John Fordham, The Guardian / 50 Great Moments in Jazz

KUNIKO’s much-anticipated third studio recording features the works of Iannis Xenakis, whose work has had a huge impact within the world of music, and in particular on percussion repertoire. Full of challenges, from the pioneering mathematical influences, to unusual notation and virtuosic performance requirements, many classify Xenakis’ compositions as unplayable, but KUNIKO’s unrivalled prowess sees her perfectly realise the composer’s vision. KUNIKO gave the world premiere of Project IX at the Japan Society in New York in 2014. Pléiades explores a rich variety of percussive sounds and textures; marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, xylo-marimba and drums create a sound world of rhythmic complexity and vibrant colours. Uniquely, Pléiades also requires a SIXXEN, an instrument designed by Xenakis and customised by KUNIKO, who hand-selected 120 metal bars to craft the perfect sound.

Recorded live at Yellowhammer Brewing in Huntsville, Alabama, in May 2021, Secret Stratosphere finds William Tyler and fellow psychedelic dreamers The Impossible Truth refashioning prime cuts from the Nashville guitarist’s rich catalog, casting new light onto once-familiar songs. Featuring the crackling combo of Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs, Dead Weather), Brian Kotzur (Silver Jews, Country Westerns), and Luke Schneider (solo, Margo Price), the quartet stretch the dynamics of Tyler’s compositions to their fullest inter-dimensional potential, exposing a deep undercurrent of kosmische and post-rock influences (with the right amount of grit from the nitrous corner of the Dead Lot).
