Emerging from the ashes of punky indie pop act Juniper Moon in 2005, Linda Guilala started out like a slightly moodier sibling of the former band before drastically changing up their sound on subsequent releases, becoming heavier, noisier, and spacier while writing increasingly darker, more personal lyrics. Espacio de Tiempo (2009-2019) collects 78 minutes’ worth of highlights from the two full-lengths and numerous singles and EPs the band released during that time period, and while a lengthy, career-to-date-spanning compilation might seem like a strange move for such a relatively obscure band, listening makes it clear that this a tremendously talented, creative group who deserve wider recognition. Arranged non-chronologically, the collection gives the listener a sense of how much stylistic range the band have covered while demonstrating their skills at writing consistently catchy and well-crafted songs. The lyrics to “Nadie Se Dar’a Cuenta,” from 2009 debut Bucles Infinitos, are about masking one’s pain with bright colors, and the three selections taken from the album all seem to follow that premise, mixing peppy organs and summery guitars with downcast (but slightly hopeful) lyrics. Two tunes from 2011’s Paranormal EP are present, and while they allude to vintage horror and sci-fi (much like the band’s name itself, a reference to 1967 kaiju epic The X from Outer Space), the songs are still about emptiness and anxiety — “Un Mill’on de Zombies M’as” expresses a desire to not just become another zombie lost in the city. Guitarist Bruno Mosquera joined the group in time for 2014’s Xeristar EP, adding a Wall of Sound shoegaze attack to the band’s music, and this is where they really started to take off. The blazing guitar effects add an emotional heft to the blunt apologies of “Lo Siento Mucho,” and the deceptively cheery “Verano” disguises its lyrics about spending a rainy summer alone with a surging rhythm and slightly surfy guitars. All of this built up to Linda Guilala’s astonishing second album, 2016’s Psicon’autica, a sprawling, ambitious suite of searing noise-pop tunes and atmospheric interludes. Tracks like “Fobia Social II” and “La ‘Ultima Vez (1a Recidiva)” are overpowering whirlwinds, filled with densely layered effects and rich, yearning melodies which match the power of the soul-crushing lyrics, whether or not the listener is fluent in Spanish. After Psicon’autica, the band shifted their lineup again, with Mari V’azquez replacing Mosquera, and they released a productive run of non-album singles, including the dramatic echo-gaze ballad “Primavera Negra” and the ecstatic, Krautrocky fan favorite “Mucho Mejor.” Seemingly moving away from the harsher aspects of their second album, their newer material is no less complex or vivid, and it’ll be exciting to hear what directions they explore from here. – Paul Simpson

The Nordic countries have always offered a fascinating uniqueness in their approach to jazz. A uniqueness that is no doubt confirmed by this magnificent album by Linda Fredriksson. With Juniper, the Finnish saxophonist, already active in the Mopo trio and the Superposition quartet, demonstrates the full range of their artistic skills here. Surrounded by Tuomo Prättälä on piano (electric and acoustic), Minna Koivisto on modular synth, Olavi Louhivuori on drums and Mikael Saastamoinen on bass, Fredriksson combines themes composed over a number of years on guitar, piano and vocals (heard on ‘Lempilauluni’), which have now been beautifully arranged for this group. Juniper is, according to Linda, a singer-songwriter’s album but performed by an instrumental jazz band. The album is, above all, a record centred around introspection, a form of soaring meditation, that is then speckled with little findings, like the watermark rain heard on ‘Neon Light’ (and the ‘Sky Was Trans’), the weightless opening theme…

This record is about reparation. History has not let two extraordinary composers meet each other. Georg Friedrich Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach came to the world in 1785, one month apart. Twice they failed to meet each other and never again would their life paths cross, instead following parallel ways. This album is dedicated to this failure.

Vienna. 1803: George Bridgetower, a violinist of Afro-European descent, caused a furore with his virtuosity and captivated Beethoven, who was fascinated by his unique and exotic character and wrote a hellishly difficult and magnificent sonata for him. Despite the enormous success of the premiere by Beethoven and Bridgetower, a clumsy remark by the violinist about a friend of the composer led to this famous sonata finally being dedicated to Rodolphe Kreutzer, by whom, however, it was never to be played because of its enormous difficulty. Ten years later Beethoven composed his next and last violin sonata, dedicated to Pierre Rode, in a completely different character, enormously poetic and introverted. Written in the phase of Beethoven’s life that is widely associated with his “Immortal Beloved”, the sonata nevertheless has the typical, incomparable energy. Described as a “fiery virtuoso” (The Strad), “soul violinist” (Sankei Shinbun) or “devil violinist” (Bayerischer Rundfunk), Lina Tur Bonet now joins forces with Aurelia Visovan, who won the 2019 competition of the MA Festival in Bruges, to celebrate Beethoven’s anniversary with the recording of these sonatas. After intensive research, inspired by Clive Brown’s extensive research on the subject, among others, a daring and innovative version is offered, combining Beethoven’s fire, poetry and humour with the search for the authentic.

After a very successful release in France, L’Impératrice’s debut album « Matahari » is finally out in the UK ! “Impératrice” is French for “Empress”, and if their name is a difficult thing to grasp for anglophones, musically there’s nothing that doesn’t translate. This recording has selected almost all of the piano-voice songs by Ángel Barja, based on ancient Galician folklore, where the melody tames a very accomplished popular style, slenderised in a subtle and coloristic piano accompaniment that scrupulously observes the conventions of popular roots voice writing. Barja preserves the syllabic nature of the melodies and insists on maintaining the accentuations against the verse. He alternates in them the strophic song, with turns and repetitions, with the simplicity of the popular tune, in many cases with medieval roots, as happens in the Cantiga “Those who know how to love” («Cuantas savedes amar») with a 13th century melody. Another bloc groups exuberant Christmas songs and, last, a third group, very eclectic, assembles songs of different styles and subjects. The poetic anthology used by Barja in his songs is very successful regarding the rhythm and musicality of these verses. It is no coincidence that, despite the apparent aesthetical and geographical remoteness of Galicia and Granada, our composer chose Federico García Lorca to compose five of his songs. José María Pemán was the poet chosen by the composer to set two of his most beautiful and brilliant songs: “Lemons carries the river” («Limones van por el río»), title of this CD production. This sample of the best of his legacy clearly pretends to showcase his music, his talent as melody composer and his mastery to combine sonorities and tradition.

Lily Allen’s No Shame is her fourth studio album and the follow-up to 2014’s Sheezus. No Shame features the singles “Higher” and “Three” and is set for release via Parlophone/Warner Bros. Records.

No Shame is Lily Allen’s most personal, insightful and fully-formed record to date. It includes lead song “Trigger Bang” featuring Giggs, which The Guardian describes as, “a return to the melancholic pop that made her so intriguing.”

Working with collaborators Fryars, Mark Ronson, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Burna Boy, P2J and Cass Lowe to create No Shame, Lily says her goal was to make an album that is “as truthful as possible.” Speaking about the sense of catharsis that came with making the album, she says, “I believe that we as humans work through things by talking about them, and that’s what making music is for me. It’s sharing things that you hope are going to connect with people, not that are going to connect with algorithms.”

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 33:42 minutes | 754 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia – Legacy

Lily & Maria’s sole, mighty rare album is a strange oddity, all the more so for its appearance on a major label. As singers, Lily & Maria sound very much like the sort of high-voiced, virginal female vocalists common in the early-’60s folk revival, like the only somewhat less slightly obscure duo Kathy & Carol (who recorded traditional folk music for Elektra). But the material and production on Lily & Maria show a decidedly psychedelic, late-’60s influence, if only a mild acid folk one. It creates the impression of a couple of choirgirls singing tunes that are a cross between what you’d hear from a choir and a coffeehouse duo. The big difference is that the words are far more inscrutable and enigmatic than anything you’d hear either a choir or coffeehouse folkies singing. The dreamy, obscurely poetic lyrics are very much in the vibe of 1968 psychedelia, and the arrangements are usually eerily sparse to the point of underproduction, to the extent that it seems evident Columbia didn’t set aside much of a budget for the sessions. Yet acoustic guitar is sometimes embellished by tasteful, low-key orchestration and electric instruments that add to the appealing, hushed, never-never-land ambience. While the feel is usually laid-back and pretty, there’s an overlay of unsettling mystery (particularly when the gothic organ comes in), like stumbling across a couple of self-sufficient orphans in a haunted house. Too, it’s not all quiet acid folk, getting into a strident, semi-psychedelic rocking mood on occasion, a more straightforward uplifting folk-rock one on “Aftermath” and a tinge of jazz torch singing on “Melt Me.” If you’re looking for a reference point, this might appeal to fans of the weird acid folk of rediscovered singer/songwriter Linda Perhacs, though Perhacs’ sole album came out after Lily & Maria. Lily & Maria actually weren’t as good as Perhacs, and the album’s not great, but it’s an interesting one. ~ Richie Unterberger
