Soprano Alexandra Lowe and pianist Patrick Milne explore music and text inspired by Greece, the Middle East, and Lowe’s home country, Spain, in Le Voyage; an international journey told through French romantic song.

Highlights include Ravel’s Cinq mélodies in the beautiful original Greek, Shéhérazade and Debussy’s Chansons de Bilitis, alongside lesser-known composer Charles Koechlin’s versions of the same texts. The latter is an astonishing discovery – occupying a more ethereal, mystical plane where the musical language is quite unlike anything else on the album.

The curious tale of Lou Reed’s 1973 album Berlin, is worthy of a documentary in itself. It’s trajectory from critical and commercial failure to one of the most highly regarded records in his canon has vindicated Reed’s vision for the album. This concert film was shot 33 years after the former Velvet Underground front man unleashed Berlin on the world. A remarkable critical volte-face has occurred in the intervening years, although Reed has rarely performed material from the album. Director Julian Schnabel headed to St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York, at the tail end of 2006 to shoot this document of Berlin’s live resurrection. The film is culled from a five-night stint at the venue in which Reed, and a host of guest performers, brought the album back to life.

Sam “Lightnin’” Hopkins, a true poet who invented most of his lyrics on the spot and never seemed to run out of new ideas, was a blues giant of post-war blues whose style was rooted in pre-war Texas traditions. While he cranked up his amp to fierce proportions when performing for his friends at Houston juke joints, producers who recorded him for the so-called folk-blues market usually insisted that he use an acoustic guitar for more “authentic” results. Either way, Lightnin’ seldom made a bad record, and this June 4, 1963, session on which he played acoustic was among his finest, thanks much to the sensitive support of bassist Leonard Gaskin and drummer Herbie Lovelle, who did a remarkable job of following his irregular bar patterns and abrupt song endings.

Sam Hopkins was a Texas country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. Along the way, Hopkins watched the genre change remarkably, but he never appreciably altered his mournful Lone Star sound, which translated onto both acoustic and electric guitar. Hopkins’ nimble dexterity made intricate boogie riffs seem easy, and his fascinating penchant for improvising lyrics to fit whatever situation might arise made him a beloved blues troubadour.

Lionel Richie – Just For You (2004) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Lionel Richie – Just For You (2004)

Features 2.0 Stereo and 5.1 multichannel surround sound

Lionel Richie spent much of the ’90s relatively quiet, and when he attempted a comeback toward the end of the decade, it didn’t make many waves. It wasn’t until the early part of the 2000s that his profile increased considerably as his greatest-hits disc The Definitive Collection cracked the Top 20, he guest-judged on American Idol, and his daughter Nicole tramped around on the Fox reality show The Simple Life. All of this set the stage for Just for You, his 2004 return to adult contemporary soft rock. There are still gentle quiet storm overtones and subdued R&B beats on a few tracks, such as his duet with Daniel Bedingfield, “Do Ya,” but the overall approach on this record is firmly within the polished, melodic soft rock that brought Richie to a massive crossover audience in the early ’80s, only updated for contemporary radio. Just for You is a well-crafted record; if anything, it’s a little too well crafted, sailing by on its sleek surfaces and carefully constructed songs, leaving it as nothing much more than a collection of romantic, mature mood music. It’s effective romantic mood music, though, and after a few plays, a handful of the hooks begin to sink in, even if the songs themselves are never quite as memorable as his hits from the ’80s. Nevertheless, this is one of the more appealing records Richie had made in quite some time, as it’s both assured and unassuming, relaxed and tuneful. Unlike his ’90s records, it’s consistent, both in its quality of songs and its cohesive sound, and even if it’s not a full-fledged comeback, it’s a solid latter-day record that lives up to his legacy.
