It is hard to know, upon again experiencing a sweet and long lost pleasure of youth, how much of our delight is caught in the lure of nostalgia, and what is genuinely spectacular about the artist that caused one to keep the flames of affectionate memory burning protectively throughout these so many years. With Lana, I have no doubts that it is the latter. She was always an extraordinary chanteuse, with exquisite taste in choosing the finest lyrics, arrangements, and high thoughts. Even minor musical works, once blessed and anointed by the talents of Ms. Cantrell, got the magic, and became bigger than life gems in the expansive universe of her heavenly repertoire, and fast favorites with her fanatical following.

A 60s and 70s pop rock singer who taught herself how to sing and perform in front of audiences. With no formal voice training she made her way into the music industry by just being herself and and doing what she wanted to do. A trim, tall, long-haired bombshell, many believed that Lana Cantrell had to be something more than just a singer, because of her beauty, demeanor and class.

Cantrell recorded for RCA Victor Records, releasing seven albums. Her preferred style of music was pop standards, but she later made contemporary pop rock a significant part of her performances. Cantrell commented in a 1994 profile, “Think of how few people can still make their careers by singing standards…. Lana Cantrell is one of those mysteries of the 60’s. An over-the-top belter who could compete with the best of them. After Barbra Streisand hit in 1963, each record company had to have their belter. A young quirky singer who would bust the tubes out of your new amplifier. Somewhere squeezed between Laine Kazan and Diahann Carroll was Lana Cantrell. Lana with her six RCA albums, but no hits. Lana one of the many reachers of fame in a entertainment world changing so fast that even the best and biggest of the stars were faltering. Lana! Was she just a little behind the times, or perhaps too far ahead? We suggest you to follow the original album entitled “And Then There Was Lana”, which was released in 1967.

The arpeggione, invented in 1823 by the Viennese luthier Johann Georg Stauffer, had a curious destiny. As its alternative names ‘guitar violoncello’ and ‘guitare d’amour’ suggest, it is in fact a guitar fitted with a bridge, held between the knees like a cello and played with a bow. The instrument enjoyed some success for around a decade, but, oddly enough, almost nothing has survived from its specific repertory except one supreme masterpiece: the sonata Franz Schubert wrote for it in 1824. The guitar was very popular in Vienna at that time, and Schubert was also fond of it; the original version of Die schöne Müllerin was published with guitar accompaniment! Guido Balestracci and the musicians of L’Amoroso have built a delightful Schubertiad around this famous sonata, combining the arpeggione and the piano with voice and guitars to appropriate a rich selection of the Viennese composer’s lieder.

A classic 70s soul record, Out Here On My Own was released by Lamont Dozier in 1973. Dozier is a master songwriter and performer, and this album is not to be missed.

Some strong ’70s R&B from the great songwriter Lamont Dozier. It was one of the better combinations of socio-political commentary and urgent soul vocals done in the period. The title cut, as well as the single “Fish Ain’t Bitin” and “Out Here On My Own,” were sizable hits.

American singer-songwriter Lamont Dozier’s mid-70s release, Black Bach, is his soulful interpretation of songs based upon baroque stylings. The groove is undeniable, and mixed with strings it brings the record to a new level never before demonstrated by Dozier.

A well-sung but uneven album from legendary songwriter Lamont Dozier. Dozier didn’t get his momentum going as a solo act until the next album. This was his introductory vehicle, and it served to let him work out the kinks. Everything except the lyrics was first-rate; his vocals, the production, and the arrangements worked, and Dozier sounded convincing on the uptempo tunes and compelling on the ballads.
