Recorded live as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in June 2018, ‘Vesper’ is guitarist/composer Kim Myhr’s collaboration with the world-renowned Australian Art Orchestra, led by Peter Knight. A long-form, immersive work consisting of three movements that add up to a combined running time of just under one hour, it further demonstrates Myhr’s masterly command of complex musical resources and extended duration. ‘Vesper’ – which means “evening” in classical Latin – also reunites Myhr with drummer and percussionist Tony Buck, of Australia’s legendary improv trio The Necks. Buck was one of the three guest drummers featured on Myhr’s acclaimed Hubro recording ‘You | me’, shortlisted for the 2018 Nordic Music Prize alongside Bjork and Susanne Sundfør.

Kim Kashkashian introduces a duo with Russian composer-pianist Lera Auerbach. Their first collaborative recording features Auerbach’s viola and piano version of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes op. 34, and Auerbach’s own, darker, sonata for viola and piano, Arcanum. The musicians first met at Switzerland’s Verbier Festival in 2010, although Auerbach had long been aware of Kashkashian’s recordings, and the “quality of life-or-death-intensity to her performing, which is rare and wonderful.” Arcanum, accordingly, was written for Kashkashian. Its title, the composer explained in a recent interview, “means ‘mysterious knowledge’: I was fascinated by the inner voice within each of us, some may call it perhaps intuition, some maybe guided meditation, but there is some knowledge that we have, which we may not necessarily verbalize or rationalize. This knowledge allows us to see the truth, to be guided, to seek answers.”

On this compelling first release it revolves around Debussy’s 1915 Sonata for flute, viola and harp and its influence, most directly felt in Takemitsu’s shimmering ‘And then I knew ‘twas wind’. Debussy himself had been profoundly moved by his encounter with music of the East and in his last works was emphasizing tone-colour, texture and timbre and a different kind of temporal flow. In this music, the elasticity of Debussy’s feeling for time (as Heinz Holliger observed) pointed far into the future and to the works of Boulez. And indeed to the music of Sofia Gubaidulina, whose ‘Garden of Joys and Sorrows’ makes its own reckoning with orient and occident. Gubaidulina has said that she considers herself “a daughter of two worlds, whose soul lives in the music of the East and the West”. Produced by Manfred Eicher in the Lugano Studio.

Not many people wait until they’re 66 years old to bring out their debut album. Even though Kim Gordon has a CV that’s 15 km long, Sonic Youth’s bassist and singer has never taken the time so express herself as a completely solo act – until now. The aptly named No Home Record (a nod towards Chental Akerman’s No Home Movie which explores the director’s relationship with her mother, an Auschwitz survivor) is the fruit of a life spent in music. The no wave/punk DNA of Sonic Youth’s music remains intact here, though it also adapts to the times with touches of electronic music. This beautifully genre-less album goes through many different styles: rock noise sequences, dark and industrial ambient tracks, avant-garde songs, mystical ballads, we could go on… Yet despite all this eclecticism, No Home Record (a record produced by Justin Raisen – behind Angel Olsen, Yves Tumor, John Cale, Charli XCX – and recorded at the Sphere Ranch in Los Angeles) can still be considered an entity. Massachusetts metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE will release their new album, “Atonement”, on August 16 via Metal Blade Records. “‘Unleashed’ is about inner passion and rage coming up to the surface,” said singer Jesse Leach. “We all have that wild within that often stays dormant until a tragic event triggers and awakens it. This song is about that awakening within. I feel we were able to capture something raw and intense on this song and I’m stoked for everyone to hear it! The new album ‘Atonement’ is a reflection of perseverance and passion through the trials and suffering of our existence.” The elaborate illustration on the “Atonement” album cover was created by none other than talented U.K.-based artist Richey Beckett (METALLICA, MASTODON) with the band’s own Mike D’Antonio handling art direction and layout duties. “Atonement” features guest appearances by the band’s former lead singer Howard Jones and TESTAMENT frontman Chuck Billy.
