SOMM Recordings announces Volume 3 of the Tessa Uys and Ben Schoeman Piano Duo’s ground-breaking series exploring Franz Xaver Scharwenka’s arrangements of Beethoven Symphonies. A composer of no mean stature in his own right, Scharwenka’s transcriptions were once widely admired, his treatments of Beethoven’s symphonies a high-watermark of the genre. Volume 1 (SOMMCD 0637) met with universal acclaim; Gramophone praising the “mastery” of the performances, BBC Music finding it “utterly beguiling”, and MusicWeb International declaring “I was blown away by this magnificent recording”. Of Volume 2 (SOMMCD 0650), Gramophone hailed it as “a thoroughly rewarding, often revelatory view of this over-played and overrecorded masterpiece [Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony]”. BBC Music Magazine said: “In terms both of precise co-ordination and engaging interplay, the performances are state-of-the-art”. Volume 3 couples perhaps the least known of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, No.2 in D major, and the extraordinary scale and innovation of No.7 in A major. As Robert Matthew-Walker points out in his informative booklet notes, perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the Second Symphony, composed during a period of crippling self-doubt and encroaching deafness, is that it is “so positive and full of life, tingling with vitality and energy”. Of the Seventh Symphony, he writes, “Beethoven poses further challenges to his interpreters – technical as well as musical… Nothing like this had ever been expressed in music before.”

‘The Stradgrass Sessions’ is the long-awaited album from American violinist Tessa Lark. A recording in which Lark invited multi-Grammy award winners to join her on a recording of violin exploration through classical, folk and jazz. The album also includes the premiere recording of John Corigliano’s STOMP.
‘This album is a snapshot of the way I live in music. Diversely; organically; intimately; sometimes collaboratively, sometimes solitarily; always sincerely; and anywhere, be it a concert hall or home studio.
Stradgrass is the exploration of the violin’s stylistic capabilities, through various American folk styles, from a Classical lens.
The word ‘Stradgrass’ first came about in 2015, from the novelty of performing Bluegrass on the Stradivari I was playing at the time: the 1683 ex-Gingold violin, on loan to me until 2018 as a result of my silver medal finish at the 2014 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Hearing Bluegrass played on a Strad is unusual, unfortunately, so I thought it warranted its own term. The word has caught on in the social media world and seems to succinctly encapsulate what one might partly expect from a recital of mine.
Stradgrass seems to be a type of musical exploration that is becoming more common within Classical violin training, and I hope this album will further encourage us all to continue that direction.’ Tessa Lark

Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) and his son Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) were two formative Italian composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Alessandro was one of the main representatives of the Neapolitan school, a great innovator of Baroque music and especially known for his vocal music such as operas, oratorios, cantatas, etc. His son Domenico became famous above all for his numerous compositions for keyboard instruments. But he was also active in the field of vocal composition. On this album, cantatas by both Scarlattis are effectively combined with sonatas by Domenico. These sonatas are quite rightly among the most original of their genre in the 18th century.

Telex was originally formed as a fun project. Initially, she recorded electro cover versions of international hits. She had her first successes with her versions of the titles Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley, Ça plane pour moi by Plastic Bertrand and Dance to the Music by Sly Stone. In 1979 she released her first own title Moskow Diskow, with which she also gained international fame. In 1980, on the advice of her manager, she participated in the Belgian preliminary to the Eurovision Song Contest, organized by the Walloon television station RTBF under the title Éliminatoires belges du grand prix de la chanson. Telex managed to win the preliminary decision against the six other participating artists. Their entry Euro-vision was the first entry on the contest itself at the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 in The Hague. Telex received 14 points for it (including the second highest score of ten points from Portugal) and reached the 17th place among 19 participants.
After the Eurovision Song Contest, Telex left the label rkm, which was distributed in Germany through Hansa by Ariola in France by wea and Great Britain by Sire.

Telex wurde ursprünglich als Spaßprojekt gegründet. Zunächst nahm sie Electro-Coverversionen internationaler Hits auf. Erste Erfolge hatte sie mit ihren Versionen der Titel Rock Around the Clock von Bill Haley, Ça plane pour moi von Plastic Bertrand und Dance to the Music von Sly Stone. 1979 veröffentlichte sie ihren ersten eigenen Titel Moskow Diskow, mit dem sie auch international Bekanntheit erlangte. 1980 nahm sie auf Anraten ihres Managers am belgischen Vorentscheid zum Eurovision Song Contest teil, der vom wallonischen Fernsehsender RTBF unter dem Titel Éliminatoires belges du grand prix de la chanson veranstaltet wurde. Telex konnte die Vorentscheidung gegen die sechs anderen teilnehmenden Künstler gewinnen. Ihr Beitrag Euro-vision war beim Eurovision Song Contest 1980 in Den Haag der erste Beitrag über den Wettbewerb selbst. Telex erhielt dafür 14 Punkte (darunter aus Portugal die zweithöchste Wertung von zehn Punkten) und erreichte den 17. Platz unter 19 Teilnehmern.
