Richie’s fourth album, originally released in 1992, was his first compilation album containing 14 tracks, four of them recorded with the Commodores. Also included in the track listing is Endless Love, his duet with Diana Ross. On his own and as part of the Commodores, by 1992 Lionel Richie amassed more than enough singles for a greatest-hits collection. Unfortunately, this is one of those compilations that, good intentions aside, falls so flat there’s not much point in buying it. By trying to cover his solo material, while touching base with his Commodores fans, and adding some new cuts, no part of his career is well represented. For the record, Back to Front lacks ‘Oh No,’ ‘Lady You Bring Me Up,’ ‘Ballerina Girl,’ ‘You Are,’ ‘My Love,’ ‘Stuck on You,’ ‘Love Will Conquer All,’ ‘Se La,’ and ‘Dancing on the Ceiling,’ all Top 40 hits. If Motown had concentrated solely on solo Richie, with another collection of Commodores hits, this could have been a solid, career-topping CD. As it is, it’s strong, but hearing such gems as ‘Still,’ ‘Truly,’ ‘Say You, Say Me,’ and ‘Running With the Night’ makes you long to hear the cuts that aren’t here. Of the three new songs, ‘Do It to Me’ and ‘My Destiny’ are classic, smooth Richie, but ‘Love, Oh Love’ is very schmaltzy. If you’re a casual Lionel Richie fan, this might suffice, but for anyone who truly enjoys pop music, this collection is not worth your money.

The winner of numerous prestigious prizes, including several Gramophone Awards, the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, founded by Lionel Meunier in 2004, is now regarded as a benchmark in the interpretation of the great works of German Baroque music. Its unfailingly faithful and lively approach to such masters as Bach, Buxtehude and Scheidt has made the group’s reputation, but this new recording features a major work by Heinrich Biber, a composer hitherto absent from its discography: his Requiem in F minor for 14 voices, composed around 1692. The programme is completed by two sacred works by Christoph Bernhard (Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Friede fahren and Tribularer si nescirem misericordias tuas), two pieces by Johann Joseph Fux, and the Sonata a 6 in A minor of Johann Michael Nicolai. On GAÏA, Loueke reunited with his longtime trio featuring bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth for a session produced by GRAMMY-winning producer and Blue Note president Don Was that was recorded live in the studio with an intimate audience in attendance.
“I always wanted to record this trio live” says Loueke of the sessions, which were captured at Sear Sound in New York City. “We were all in the same room with a small audience, no headphones, no isolation and no overdubs of course. It has a real live feel. It was a very special event.”
Loueke’s compositional mastery is evident in the construction of the 11 original songs presented here and the trio’s performances are extraordinary, a testament to the intuitive dialogue these three musicians have developed since they first met while attending the Berklee College of Music in the late 1990s. “I don’t think we sound like any other trio on the scene today’ says an understated Loueke. “I have been writing for this trio for a long time. They can handle every metrical challenge in my songs. There is an inside communication between the three of us.”

Lionel Loueke, one of the jazz world’s most searingly original and sought-after guitarists, has devoted the bulk of his output to original music. But Close Your Eyes, originally released on vinyl by Newvelle in 2018, found the Benin-born Loueke focusing entirely on standards and canonical jazz classics. Maybe it’s taking an old warhorse like Avalon and turning it into a thoroughbred, with Cat Anderson’s pulsating screech trumpet heralding the race. Or it could be Hamp’s classic Midnight Sun with its mysterioso vibraphone prelude. One thing’s for sure: Alive and Jumping is a “live” jazz-fest. It’s also a master-class in swing, as Milt Buckner’s cascading chromatic runs on the 1944 hit Hamp’s Boogie Woogie rile up the crowd, and the tune’s call and response choruses unearth the roots of rock ‘n roll. On Funky Mama, Eddie Chamblee’s ripping, rocking sax solo along with Cat Anderson’s growling wa-wa mute and high-note antics bring down the house. A must for all Lionel Hampton fans!

The climax is provided on Hamp’s perennial “Flying Home” which finds Illinois Jacquet reprising and then extending his famous solo.

The outstanding Audiophile album presented here showcases Hamptons breathtaking talents during the early days of Stereophonic recordings. The sextet session, Lionel, features Hampton alternating between vibes, piano and drums (he began his career as a drummer and recorded his first vibraphone solo during the 1930 Louis Armstrong version of “Memories of You”). His approach to the piano was highly particular, as he usually played it with only one or two fingers per hand as if he were performing on the vibes. His amazing technique on the instrument can be seen on many of his filmed performances.

Lionel Hampton was the first jazz vibraphonist and was one of the jazz giants beginning in the mid-’30s. He has achieved the difficult feat of being musically open-minded (even recording “Giant Steps”) without changing his basic swing style. Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys’ Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a ’20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby’s Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard’s Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite’s band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong. At a recording session in 1930, a vibraphone happened to be in the studio, and Armstrong asked Hampton (who had practiced on one previously) if he could play a little bit behind him and on “Memories of You” and “Shine”; Hamp became the first jazz improviser to record on vibes.
