Lisa Simone’s album, All Is Well, marks her debut album as Lisa, having previously released two albums as Simone, and two albums with Liquid Soul. In addition to presenting five of her own songs, she offers up the standard Autumn Leaves, Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne, her mother Nina’s Ain’t Got No & I Got Life, plus three more songs – backed by guitarist and arranger Hervé Samb, co-composer of several tracks; plus Reggie Washington on bass guitar & double-bass, and Sonny Troupé on drums and percussion. It was released on the Laborie Jazz label, that since 2006 been focused on the young composers of the French and international Jazz Scene, and the voice had no leading representative among its various productions until now.

Musical love at first sight’, that is a good description of the meeting of Jos van Immerseel and Lisa Shklyaver. With her sweet tone and fine articulation, the young clarinetist effortlessly won the pianist over. No matter which repertoire they played, it clicked immediately.
The desire to come as close as possible to the sound aesthetic of composers at the time of the first performance of their works, along with the simple pleasure of the sound of period instruments, guide Jos van Immerseel in his approach.
For this recording, offering a panorama of French music for clarinet and piano from the early 20th century, Jos van Immerseel has chosen a Bechstein piano of 1870, and Lisa Schklyaver, a Dolnet Lefevre & Pigis clarinet from 1930.
The recording is doubly precious in that it proposes both the view of one of the finest performers of French music on a variety of remarkable works as well as, in a way, the sonority and poetry of an era.
2015 marks Jos van Immerseel’s 70th birthday, one of Belgium’s most acclaimed musicians. Later in 2015 Jos van Immerseel and Anima Eterna will record and release an album of Janacek and Dvorak.

The music on “Presentiment”, a 2018 release with four orchestral works by Rolf Martinsson, was described by one critic as “bold and uncompromisingly personal, eschewing avant-garde modernism and engaging us with solidly expert conventional techniques of composition and orchestration” (MusicWeb International.com). The present volume features more of Martinssons music, performed by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra a body with which Martinsson has enjoyed a close relationship as its composer in residence. In two of the recorded works, the orchestra conducted by Paul Mägi is joined by another of Martinssons regular collaborators, the soprano Lisa Larsson. Larsson is the soloist in Ich denke Dein…, a song cycle setting five poems by Goethe, Rilke and von Eichendorff, and in Into Eternity, a longer work which in its second half incorporates two poems by the Swedish poet Karin Boye. Into Eternity was composed for the opening of the Malmö orchestra’s new concert hall in 2015, and Martinsson wrote it, as well as Ich denke Dein…, with Lisa Larsson in mind. Larsson also appears on the composer’s previous monograph on BIS, in his settings of poems by Emily Dickinson.

Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan is set to release a live album with the contemporary-classical orchestra, s t a r g a z e, led by the revered German conductor Andre de Ridder. The collabora-tion – which sees Hannigan’s sparse, ethereal folk transformed into something cinematic and transfixing – has been taken to select festivals across Europe, and most recently graced the stages of London’s Barbican and Dublin’s National Concert Hall. Thankfully for those yet to experience the mesmeric live show, their recent performance at the NCH in October last year is set for release in the shape of Live In Dublin, a discography-spanning 14-track live album, which also includes new track, ‘Bookmark’. This live record follows Hannigan’s critically-acclaimed third full-length, 2016’s At Swim, and arrives in a fruitful musical career spanning 17 years and several award nominations: from the Mercury Prize to Ire-land’s Choice Music Prize and Meteor Music Awards. Across it’s fourteen tracks – including the likes of ‘Ora’, ‘Lille’, ‘Fall’, ‘Little Bird’, ‘A Sail’ and ‘Undertow’ – Hannigan’s delicate vocals and soft-plucked gui-tars and mandolin are delivered against a hypnotic backdrop of sublime waltzing keys, affective string sec-tions and minimalist percussion. The result is something majestic in scope and ambition, and truly beguil-ing in the best possible way.

Following her acclaimed recording of Mozart’s Flute Quartets with the Brodsky Quartet and her more recent disc of Fauré and Debussy, the flautist Lisa Friend continues her journey to explore another sound-world in this programme of works for flute and guitar(s). Spanning music from Brahms to Bellinati, the wide-ranging programme juxtaposes original compositions for these forces (Ibert’s Entr’acte, Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango) with arrangements – some of instrumental works (Brahms, Poulenc, Shostakovich) and some of vocal pieces (Donizetti, Rachmaninoff). Works for flute and guitar quartet are interspersed with more intimate pieces, for flute and solo guitar, which adds further variety to the programme. No mere accompanists, Craig Ogden and the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet play a significant role throughout. The end result is a fascinating and rewarding programme of delightfully listenable music.

Twenty years after her debut, Lisa Ekdah revisits pop gems past and present with the usual playfulness, finesse and class that we have become accustomed to from her. On Grand Songs, the Swede is covering a lot of ground, with versions of numbers by Billie Eilish (Wish You Were Gay), The Beatles (I Should Have Known Better), Bob Dylan (Most of the Time) and Beyonc’e (If I Were a Boy), as well as Diana Ross and the Supremes (Stop! In the Name of Love), The Monkees (Take a Giant Step) and James Taylor (You Can Close Your Eyes). Like any jazz singer worth their salt, Ekdahl excels with this tricky material and takes advantage of it in order to showcase her unique vocal timbres. The backing here alternates between jazz quintet and large string orchestra with intimate sequences giving way to a dash of lush hedonism. Ekdahl is at her best when she dares to surprise, as on the delightful bossa nova version of I Should Have Known Better and her very 1950s jazz cover of If I Were a Boy. The present recording compiles nine works for and with flutes of various sorts, six solos, one solo with optional live electronics and two duos (violin and harpsichord, respectively), and they showcase aspects of the composers thinking from 2006-15. Similarities and disparities are at play within these nine scores, but the overall tendency towards slowness and dynamics finely distinguished among the quieter ends of the spectrum prevails in each piece, as does a tempo that seldom if ever fluctuates. This basic, and by nature somewhat simplistic recapitulation works only as a means of placing the heritage to which Daniele Venturi clearly aligns himself, the flute as a timeless yet modern instrument, indeed a timelessly modern one, more a source of careful and thorough exploration than a harbinger of pastoral melody.
