The indie-folk album was created in a magical songwriting process against the backdrop of the stormy Dutch seashore. The works included on this album span 25 years of creative activity. While current projects are always my focus, looking back is not something I often do; however, this recording confronted me with compositions representing a good part of my creative life. Most interesting was to notice that, although my music has changed through the years, there are traits common to all these pieces. These are elements that encompass aspects ranging from the expressive to the technical. A penchant for certain types of melodic constructions, harmonies, and orchestration choices is always present in these works. Another common element is the use of idioms that stem out of Afro-Caribbean and, more specifically, from the folk and popular music of Puerto Rico’ Composer, Roberto Sierra.

Paris, London, Naples, Venice… and Lisbon! The cartography of the (late) baroque music of Europe gives an ever better overview also of the musical happenings in the Portuguese capital in the 18th century. The revival of the Portuguese musical heritage is one of the main activities of the Divino Sospiro orchestra under its director Masssimo Mazzeo. A particularly worthwhile discovery is the composer Pedro Antonio Avondano (1714-1782), descended from a dynasty of musicians of Italian origin who were active in Lisbon in the 18th century. His oratorio “Morte d’Abel” (c. 1780) is based on a popular material by Pietro Metastasio, which was set to music some 40 times in the Baroque period and thereafter. Avondano’s feverish drama fully explores the souls of the protagonists of the story’s first murder. In doing so, he employs all the expressive possibilities of the baroque musical language, which already points to the classical period. A brilliant cast of singers rounds off this meritorious world premiere recording.

Only three months after the release of their 2020 Dinner Party LP, Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder, and Kamasi Washington certified that the project of the same name would not be a one-time deal. They presented Dinner Party: Dessert with Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Tarriona “Tank” Ball (sans Bangas), and many other associates in on fairly radical alternate versions of each Dinner Party cut. At the end of the year, Dinner Party were behind the title track of Martin’s solo Village Days EP, and at some later point reconvened to make this follow-up. Enigmatic Society was synchronized with the unique quartet’s appearance at Coachella 2023. It’s another inviting exercise in concision that vaporizes genre distinctions between jazz, soul, and funk in a way that is ultimately hip-hop despite a total lack of MCs. Main Dinner Party vocalist Phoelix shares his role this time with Arin Ray and Ant Clemons. The three are on the same page with warmhearted expressions and intimate vocals that waft as peacefully as Martin and Washington’s saxophones. The tone is set by Phoelix in “Answered Prayer,” an atmospheric ballad built on Glasper’s serene piano; he sounds like he’s transmitting from the beyond as he sings of contentment and gratitude. “Secure,” also without drums, takes to the sky with help from the elder Tank. Phoelix signs off with “Can’t Go,” his noncompliance echoed by the sampled voice of Daryl Hall stretched to a drawl. Further evidence that this is a crew of ’80s babies is in the Sounwave co-production “Insane,” a showcase for a resigned Ant Clemons that blows bubbles with Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit.” Ray takes the mike for the album’s three most amiable songs, supporting an overwhelmed loved one on “Breathe,” and on both the softly bobbing “For Granted” and misty “Love Love” testifying in simple terms without being trite. As on the self-titled session, there is some instrumental material. The calmly driving “Watts Renaissance” evokes persistence and communal support. “The Lower East Side,” co-helmed by Trevor Lawrence, Jr., is dubbed-out funk with a grimace-inducing change at the two-minute mark. Enigmatic Society is neither as powerful nor as weighty as the debut, and certainly doesn’t seem intended to match it in those regards. It’s altogether a calmer, more romantic work. – Andy Kellman

‘Ghosts Again (Remixes)’ is a Martin Gore and Dave Gahan-approved collection of reinterpretations of the single from the bands 15th studio album.
Chris Liebing and Luke Slater have collaborated for one of the remixes.
Liebling said: “I have been a big fan of Depeche Mode for so many years. They have influenced the way that I think about music and DJ. I’m extremely grateful that I could not only do another remix, but that I also got to do it with one of the biggest legends in techno world [Luke Slater].”
Slater added: “When I was a kid I was buying Depeche Mode 7-inches, the early ones. I remember that well…What I love about Depeche Mode is that over the years they have just formed a world of themselves…They’ve kind of covered this timeless zone and I think that’s really special.”
Matthew Herbert, who contributed his ‘Feelings’ remix of ‘Ghosts Again’, commented: “I quite liked the idea of ‘We’ll be ghosts again’…everyone vanished from the dancefloor. The idea of the temporary community that’s being built.”
And Davide Rossi, who recorded strings for ‘Memento Mori’ and contributed a strings-only version, said: “I wanted to do this [remix] as a tribute to my love for the band. I am so thrilled that they decided to keep it and release it.”

“The folk music of the Croatian peninsula of Istria is as characteristic as it is extraordinary. Its melodies, harmonies and rhythms are unique, and sonorously expressed by the sopila – a traditional shawm instrument – as well as through choral singing and folk dances. The music with its asymmetrical rhythms is based on the so-called ‘pentatonic Istrian scale’, which consists of major and minor seconds and is thus clearly different from the other musical styles of Croatia. Numerous non-Istrian musicians and composers have been fascinated by it – among them the Croatian composer Natko Devcic, with his ‘Istrian Suite’ for orchestra (1946), or the young Croatian pianist and composer Dejan Lazic with his ‘Concerto in Istrian Style for Piano and Orchestra’ op. 18 (2014/2021) or his ‘Alterations on the Istrian Folk Hymn’ op. 29 (2022). Natko Devcic was one of Croatia’s most important composers and music educators, leaving a lasting impression on subsequent generations of musicians. His most lasting success as a composer came with his ‘Istrian Suite’ for orchestra from 1946, which uses Istrian folk music as a source of inspiration and as a link between Slavic late Romanticism and the avant-garde. Dejan Lazic’s five-movement ‘Concerto in Istrian Style for Piano and Orchestra’ op. 18 is closely connected to Istrian music, with its melodies, harmonies and rhythms, and features the ‘Istrian scale’ as well as the typical melodies played in thirds. The central movement of the concerto is an extended cadenza in which Lazic – who has already composed cadenzas for piano concertos by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and also arranged Brahms’ Violin Concerto op. 77 for piano and orchestra – demonstrates his diverse experience in this field. Lazic’s ‘Alterations on the Istrian Folk Hymn’ op. 29 were written for the present CD and are dedicated to the Munich Radio Orchestra and its principal conductor Ivan Repusic. The song ‘Draga nam je zemlja’, composed by Ivan Matetic Ronjgov, was and continues to be sung as a folk hymn in Istria, and in his work Lazic has taken its melody as the basis for a theme and twelve variations with coda for orchestra.
