Memphis gospel singer Elder Jack Ward’s spirit took flight on April 11, 2023 after a remarkable life of spreading God’s word through example, message and most especially, song. His latest album, The Storm, had just been released by Bible and Tire Records at the time of his passing and has now become the final word and work of a life well lived. Like its 2021 predecessor, Already Made, The Storm captured an element of Ward that producer Bruce Watson found truly rare in the world of gospel music: song writing. “When we connected with him and heard him, his voice was still amazing,” Watson recounted to Bob Mehr of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “He can still really hit those high notes. He has hundreds of songs…he would start singing all these different songs to us and we were pretty blown away. The fact that he writes his own songs is fairly unique. Most gospel artists, they’re doing traditional numbers. But he actually writes. So it really brings a different element to what he’s expressing.”

When I first discovered C.P.E Bach’s keyboard music, I remember being completely amazed by its versatility and originality, by its inventiveness, spectrum of expression and its boldness. I was equally astounded by how much he preceded his time, that only one generation away from his father’s High Baroque, and long before the Viennese Classical School fully flourished, he experimented so widely, pushed boundaries tirelessly, and in many ways laid the foundation for what was to become the Classical style. That he influenced Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven is clear and known, but one could also argue that he foreshadowed in certain ways the Romantic period.

Eileen Joyce, whose talent as a pianist was discovered by Percy Grainger in childhood, began studying with Artur Schnabel and Robert Teichmüller at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1927. In 1930 she was introduced to conductor Henry Wood, who arranged for her debut as a concert pianist at one of his well-known Promenade Concerts. She subsequently became both a well-known concert pianist and a recognized pianist for radio concerts. During World War II, she performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Malcolm Sargent in numerous cities in Britain destroyed by the bombardments of the German Luftwaffe.

“Wild Boy…” is a reissue of the well-known 2016 release curated by Brian Chidester, renowned researcher and biographer of Eden ahbez. Especially for this album, Brian wrote an interesting text about ahbez’s life, which definitely became the decoration of the release. With the new 2020 re-release, we went a little further and kept what is commonly referred to as studio cuts. It’s a few more minutes in the studio with ahbez himself, full of emotion and life. In addition, to the delight of fans, the edition includes an additional composition Nature Boy (Mantovani Orchestra).

Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts.
Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety.
I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air.
As an artist I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is purely that. It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life.

Captured at the peak of T. Rextasy, ‘Born To Boogie’ is the Ringo Starr-directed 1972 film of the Godfather of Glam, Marc Bolan on Blu-Ray for the first time. Featuring live versions of T. Rex’s greatest hits, recorded at their famous Wembley concerts, the film also includes a legendary jam session with T.Rex joined by Ringo Starr and Elton John, and a mad hatter’s tea party with Catweazle and (Bolan/Bowie producer) Tony Visconti. The package also features the full matinee show as well as several extra features in SD. With new annotation by Mark Paytress and previously unpublished Keith Morris photos, ‘Born To Boogie’ is the ultimate film of Marc Bolan and superstardom in the early 1970s.
Born to Boogie consists of concert footage; recording studio scenes with Ringo Starr and Elton John, filmed at the Apple Studios in Savile Row, London;[citation needed] and various vignettes reminiscent of The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, shot at Denham and Tittenhurst Park, Sunninghill. The Tea Party sequence was filmed at John Lennon’s estate in the same spots as Lennon’s “Imagine” video was filmed. The actor Geoffrey Bayldon of Catweazle fame was bemused to find that things were not going to plan when he arrived to play his role as a waiter at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Scene. The planned orchestra had to mime as the whole thing had not been planned too well.

The RCO’s performance history of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony is strangely uneven. Already three years after its completion the symphony was performed by Willem Mengelberg in a program that also boasted the composer as soloist in his own Piano Concerto No. 3. After that the symphony was on the program once more in 1921 and then there’s a gap of 59 years. From 1980 on no less than ten conductors (including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kirill Kondrashin and Kurt Sanderling) put it on the RCO’s music stands. The latest RCO incarnation proved to be an ideal performance. With Mariss Jansons at the helm, mind and heart of this piece are totally balanced and the opulence of the RCO’s sound at the Concertgebouw iss perfectly suited to Rachmaninoff’s most beloved symphony.
