Califone – villagers (2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 45:33 minutes | 892 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock, Indie Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Jealous Butcher Records
Part experimental indie and part ‘70s soft rock, Califone’s first record in three years finds creative force Tim Rutili reaching new levels of harmony, fragility, and confidence. Whether detailing aging goths retaining their identity through year-long spooky decorations (“Halloween”), an imagined conversation with an inbred monarch (“Habsburg Jaw”), or the conflicts between identity and technology (“Ox-Eye”), Villagers’ nine tracks spread out and luxuriates in the messy darkness of modern life. Like sitting in awe on the porch swing at the end of the world, Califone’s latest marvels at the edge of the universe spreading into the darkness of infinity. With 25 years of Califone in his catalog (not to mention a variety of other projects, including alt rock heroes Red Red Meat), the Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based knows well how to find that moment of awe and bliss even as things are falling apart. Part poet, part abstract painter, and always surrounded by a variety of hyper-talented collaborators (here including longtime cohorts Ben Massarella, Michael Krassner, Rachel Blumberg, and Brian Deck, as well as the likes of Nora O’Connor and Finom’s Macie Stewart), Rutili has always excelled at luring listeners through elusive lyrics, flashes of shadows and images coming together in disarming unity.

Like the sprawling branches of a tenured Magnolia, Caleb Elliott’s sophomore album Weed, Wine & Time is beauty and grit personified. From the first track of the record (Sweeter Paradigm) Elliott lays bare a thesis of hope and healing that continues throughout the album’s entirety. Elliott’s opening chorus states that, “You learn as you go along, simple as a song,” and this theme courses like blood through each of the 11 tracks that follow.

One of the greatest masters of flamenco guitar in a landmark l963 recording with singers Jose Reyes and Manero Baliardo on four of the ten tracks. This is the raw, real stuff of flamenco, putting the listener in the middle of the gypsy campfire scene. The entire heart and soul of this gypsy goes into his emotional music. The recording venue was a medieval chapel and the acoustics are perfect, both for the echoing castanets and shouts, as well as the increasing ability of SACD reproduction to preserve such subtle sound reflections. If your only exposure to such gypsy fire is the Gypsy Kings, get a load of the real thing with this disc.

Like most latter-day Manowar outings, Warriors of the World is a mixed affair rife with all of the clichés that make Manowar either Gods or an amusing joke, depending on what side of the inner circle you reside on. No matter how big a fan of the band someone might be, it’s hard to take the operatic “Nessun Dorma” and succeeding power ballad “Valhalla” seriously, as they sound like something Spinal Tap would have thought up when not worrying about amps that went to 11. In fact, too much of this disc relies on similar cheeseball balladry that, try as it might to be gallant and heroic, really comes off as self-parody. Fortunately, the disc has enough tracks that do reach higher decibels, including the last four and disc-opener “Call to Arms,” that are more indicative of what made Manowar great, namely heavy riffs and heavier attitude that, even when embracing an ethos that many would be embarrassed about, still comes off sincere. Manowar mean it when they sing about the “House of Death” and how they will “Fight Until We Die,” and that’s why you should love them, warts and all.

Malene Mortensen is a Danish jazz singer. She is an unmistakable musical talent. One can only be fascinated by a vocalist who mixes the taste of her own generation with a choice of repertoire and musicians to produce an album of such persuasive and elegant pop- perfumed jazz. On her third album, Malene has combined a set of personal originals with songs that she just plain likes. Some jazz, some pop. However, there is no doubt that Malene Mortensen’s basic approach is that of a jazz vocalist. She dares give her material that essential personal twist – often with surprising results. Her phrasing is blessed with a natural swing, her lyrical interpretations have an easy flow, and her vocal control is supple and virtuosic.

“the verdict is ‘decent but not world-beating’, with shortcomings in his soloists pulling him up well short of the best available. There is uplift and impulse in the opening movement, with brilliant details…The great peroration is impressive” – Gramophone MagazineDecember 2013
”Lucky Bamberg…This reading of the Eighth makes a perfect climax to its Mahler cycle under its Solihull-born conductor, who is surely one of the most underestimated musicians on the planet.” – Sunday Times, 20th October 2013

Sony should issue this recording at birth to everyone! It’s simply amazing! I originally heard Bernstein do this performance live and have lived with it ever since it was issued, first as LP then as CD. However, with this Japanese SACD issue, it’s like I’m really there. It comes to life like never before!
Mahler’s 7th Symphony, the “Song of the Night” as it is sometimes called, is perhaps Mahler’s most ambitious symphonic work, in five movements with two “nachtmusik” movements as the second and fourth movements, and a brilliant rondo as the last movement where the light finally breaks through. This recording is among the most acclaimed of the all the Mahler 7 recordings, superbly played and recorded with life-like brilliance.
My only complaint about the SACD issue that Sony makes us pay a usurious price. Do they think that only the Japanese enjoy SACD quality, and make the rest of us pay through the nose for it?

“It’s not only as compelling as this team’s Seventh and Ninth Symphonies, it also counts among the most bracing, revelatory Sixths on disc…The all-embracing theatricality is equal to Leonard Bernstein’s first New York recording…the torrents around the fallout from the hammerblows of fate in the colossal finale.” – BBC Music Magazine, January 2014
