Particularly present for many years on the hexagonal and international jazz scene, Matthieu Chazarenc has had the privilege of being involved in the projects of recognized jazz musicians both in France and abroad. Originally from the great south-west, having grown up in a family of music lovers and musicians, Matthieu Chazarenc follows a course of study at the same time classic: conservatory, and the field of jazz and improvised music. Through meetings, tours, travels, his involvement in different groups, he will begin to compose, write his own melodies. At the dawn of his forties, his desire to realize a project as a leader takes shape. He chooses an original formation from his instrumentation, without piano or guitar, while he accompanied the greatest pianists and guitarists who count today in jazz. He also chooses, a music resolutely turned towards a sound privileging the acoustics, the chiseled note, the love of the melody and the song, in the listening, the improvisation, the smoothness and the dynamics.

Out of around 350 works which are attributed to Tartini today, a group of sonatas, along with their isolated themes, sketches and hastily-jotted-down ideas stands out by virtue of the very long period of editing which they underwent (from the 1750s up to the composer’s death twenty years later); their deliberate collation into a single manuscript by the author (never published in spite of its gobsmacking richness); but also by virtue of their unique instrumentation, with a solo violin, but no bass at all, either written or suggested. They seem to indicate a kind of intimate conversation with their author, who never intended to share them with anyone. He dubbed them “little sonatas”, a name which probably owes as much to false modesty as it does to affection to these pages, whose experimental nature is made clearer at every turn. A number of other pieces, as well, remain annotated in the form of sketches, phrases thrown down on the page in a moment of inspiration, and a few of these phrases are taken up by violinist Matthieu Camilleri, to distil a very original ensemble of improvised pieces. He notes, though, that these improvisations have been “fixed” to an extent, on paper; and these are recording sessions, not a concert, so the artists can choose the best from several takes. The guided improvisation inspired by Tartini and in the style of the great musician, who was said to have conversed with the Devil. Camilleri gives us a number of reference points, in the form of a few sonatas originally 100% written by Tartini in this famous manuscript, which also involve a few moments of this improvised-noted element. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition of two imaginations, two and a half centuries apart!

French saxophonist Matthieu Bordenave’s first leader date for ECM introduces a new project with German pianist Florian Weber and Swiss bassist Patrice Moret. On La traversée – The Crossing – Bordenave explores musical ground between contemporary composition and jazz, subtly influenced by the innovations of the Jimmy Giuffre 3 with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow, who “opened new territory that remains relevant for improvisers today.” The recording of La traversée, he explains, was guided by an approach to trio playing, “in which melodic lines interweave and blossom in the nuances of tones, as each musician follows his intuition.” Bordenave leads the way with his highly distinctive saxophone sound, recently characterized by Down Beat as “light yet textured and authoritative”, establishing that this is music in which space will play an important role. La traversée was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Pernes-les-Fontaines in the South of France last autumn, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

The 5-string cello is more than simply the trade-mark of Matthias Michael Beckmann; it is his artistic credo and his message.

Even in familiar pieces it opens up new sound spaces. Franz Schubert’s Sonata for Arpeggione embraces whole worlds of emotion; Robert Schumann’s pieces are filled with the most profound poetry.

Here Beckmann and distinguished pianist Elena Braslavsky form an exquisite partnership.

Classical form combined with sensitive Romanticism and sublime melody – this is great, timeless music, in all its energy and humanity.

Matthias Kirschnereit and the hr-Sinfonieorchester under Michael Sanderling have compiled a compelling, captivating programme of music from the last days of the Classical era, on the cusp of the Romantic. This “half-way house” – in the best possible sense – accommodates the compositions of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Carl Maria von Weber and Felix Mendelssohn. On his latest album, the soloist makes the boldness of this musical venture audible: “I was attracted by the fact that these rare jewels were created at a time of change, of new horizons.”

It’s a perfect match: Matthias Kirschnereit, the “Poet at the Piano” (according to Süddeutsche Zeitung), and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under Jan Willem de Vriend play Schumann’s large-scale work for piano and orchestra. All of the musicians are experienced, skilled artists and they have produced a performance clearly based on knowledge of the work and musical experience. The album’s concept is impressive: Schumann’s Piano Concerto, the most frequently recorded work in the history of the CD, is presented as the highlight, but also as a sort of encore after the three lesser known Concert Pieces opp. 86, 92 and 134.

The Unknown Beethoven – is there such a thing?

The pianist Matthias Kirschnereit has therefore given himself something of a challenge for his new album by researching and recording the small but nevertheless brilliant jewels of Beethoven’s piano repertoire. “On this album it is my aim to bring to life those works by Beethoven that are seldom in the limelight and to let them sparkle anew. They include pieces that are not going to set the world on fire. I am no archaeologist who hunts around in attics, libraries or archives in search of works yet to be published. Everything he ever wrote has already been published. So I set about compiling a list – and I was utterly amazed,” explains Matthias Kirschnereit.
