Rough, rawboned energy drives Blake Shelton’s sophomore release, but it’s not quite enough to distract from its brevity or the fact that the young singer would benefit from a little more seasoning. His vocal technique is fine, and his willingness to tackle a lyric is admirable; the problem lies more with the material, which represents the doldrum state of songwriting in music city. The story told by “The Baby,” for instance, has been told more than a few times: basically it’s “My mom is dead.” But whether presented tongue-in-cheek, as in the Commander Cody trucker lament “Mama Hated Diesels,” or as poetry, which Merle Haggard achieves in “Mama Tried,” there’s something less formulaic in the older tunes. The same applies throughout The Dreamer, which explains why Shelton is at his strongest on the least-ambitious material, such as “Playboys of the Southwestern World,” a rowdy collision of “Brown Eyed Girl” and “American Pie,” sung with a mischievous twist that suggests, at times, Bruce Springsteen with a corn liquor hangover. None of the drawbacks of The Dreamer suggest any reason for pessimism about Shelton’s prospects; there’s nothing here that an escape from music row wouldn’t cure. – Robert L. Doerschuk

Bleachers are set to release their highly anticipated 3rd album Take The Sadness Out Of Saturday Night via RCA Records. In late 2020 they offered up the first taste of new music to preview the album with the release of “Chinatown” ft. Bruce Springsteen and “45”. This music is the follow up to their critically acclaimed second album, Gone Now, which came out on June 2nd, 2017. The first single “Don’t Take The Money” hit #3 at Alternative Radio. Ahead of the album release, The New York Times put out a piece that called Bleachers’ new music “anthemic life-affirming pop-rock”. Bleachers, who are known for their incredible live shows, headlined a North American tour in support of the album, which included a number of major festival dates like Sasquatch Festival, Governor’s Ball, and Firefly Music Festival. Five-time Grammy® Award-winning singer, songwriter, musician, and producer, Jack Antonoff, is the creative force behind Bleachers.

Produced by Phil Ramone, The Stranger took those who had written Joel off as a one-hit wonder by surprise (“Just the Way You Are” was among the biggest hits of 1977) and it remains a solid introduction to Joel’s restless muse at a crucial point in his career. It invited a few comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, with its prominent sax breaks, hard-edged rebel-rockers (“Only the Good Die Young”), and slice-of-life dramatics (“Scenes From an Italian Restaurant”), recounting life in a lower middle-class (Eastern Urban) setting; but Joel’s chameleonic, formalist approach to pop wasn’t to be so easily pigeonholed (Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man…).

Billy Joel teamed with Phil Ramone, a famed engineer who had just scored his first producing hits with Art Garfunkel’s Breakaway and Paul Simon’s Still Crazy After All These Years for The Stranger, his follow-up to Turnstiles. Joel still favored big, sweeping melodies, but Ramone convinced him to streamline his arrangements and clean up the production. The results aren’t necessarily revelatory, since he covered so much ground on Turnstiles, but the commercialism of The Stranger is a bit of a surprise. None of his ballads have been as sweet or slick as “Just the Way You Are”; he never had created a rocker as bouncy or infectious as “Only the Good Die Young”; and the glossy production of “She’s Always a Woman” disguises its latent misogynist streak. Joel balanced such radio-ready material with a series of New York vignettes, seemingly inspired by Springsteen’s working-class fables and clearly intended to be the artistic centerpieces of the album. They do provide The Stranger with the feel of a concept album, yet there is no true thematic connection between the pieces, and his lyrics are often vague or mean-spirited. His lyrical shortcomings are overshadowed by his musical strengths. Even if his melodies sound more Broadway than Beatles — the epic suite “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” feels like a show-stopping closer — there’s no denying that the melodies of each song on The Stranger are memorable, so much so that they strengthen the weaker portions of the album. Joel rarely wrote a set of songs better than those on The Stranger, nor did he often deliver an album as consistently listenable.

Not so surprising to learn that Beth Hart is taking on the Led Zeppelin monument in an entire album, after shielding her concerts so much with covers of Whole Lotta Love. Slash had even joined him in 2010. Rare are those who can rub themselves into Robert Plant’s voice without looking pale. But the Californian is far from being one of them and Rob Cavallo understood it very quickly when he heard him improvising on Led Zep, during recording sessions for his latest album War In My Mind (2019). The American producer at the head of Warner already had the idea of an album, driven by sound engineer Doug McKean with handpicked musicians: Tim Pierce on guitar (Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner), Chris Chaney (Rob Zombie, Slash) on bass, Jamie Muhoberac (Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones) on keyboards and drummer Dorian Crozier (Celine Dion, Joe Cocker). This tribute therefore begins very strongly with Beth’s favorite, Whole Lotta Love, on which she excels, then aligns the blockbusters of the Page and Plant repertoire: Kashmir, Stairway To Heaven, Black Dog … If the flashy and massive orchestration signed Dave Campbell can leave more than one on the tile – the purists first –, this tribute proves that Beth Hart, who finds in the airship blues the perfect ground of expression for her hoarse and powerful voice, at the crossroads of a Janis Joplin and of an Aretha Franklin, remains far too underestimated.

BLUES TRAVELER are one of the oldest blues groups still performing with almost the original line-up. According to legend, the band formed in 1997 in a garage in their hometown of Princeton, New Jersey (also the home of Bruce Springsteen, Danzig, Ill Nino and many others) and has played a wonderful mix of sweet soul, blues-eyed (white boy) blues with fine southern rock elements since the beginning. Band founders John Popper (vocals, harmonica) and Brendan Hill (drums) are still an important part of the group sound today.

The Best Is Yet to Come is the upcoming eighteenth studio album by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler. It is scheduled to be released on 26 February 2021.

The Best Is Yet to Come adopts the sound of 80s pop rock. Tyler told Ultimate Classic Rock she felt “When the Lights Go Down” had a similar sound to the music of Bruce Springsteen and Rod Stewart.

The album contains four cover songs; “Somebody’s Hero” by C.B. Green, “I’m Only Guilty (Of Loving You)” previously recorded by Chick Willis and Tab Benoit, “I’m Not in Love” by 10cc, and “Catch the Wind” by Donovan. The latter two songs had originally been intended as bonus tracks on Tyler’s previous album, Between the Earth and the Stars.

The final Asylum album from 1980 couldn’t be more different than Waits’ ’73 debut – his voice sounds like the marvellous ruin that we know and love today, the ballads remain (On the Nickel is beautiful and even Springsteen took a crack at Jersey Girl) but it’s the twisted warped blues of the title track that points the way to the extraordinary world of Swordfishtrombones.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – Mojo (2010) [DVD-AUDIO ISO]

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – Mojo
Artist: Tom Petty, The Heartbreakers | Album: Mojo | Style: Classical Rock | Year: 2010 | Quality: DVD-Audio (PCM 5.1 48kHz/24Bit, PCM 2.0 48kHz/24Bit) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 15 | Size: 4.36 Gb | Recovery: 3% | Covers: only front | Release: rip and authoring to DVD-Audio by zzayyazz from Blu-Ray Reprise (PET49407), 2010 | Note: Not Watermarked

Tom Petty has been fronting the Heartbreakers off and on (mostly on) for over 30 years now, and he and his band have been delivering a high level of no-frills, classy, and reconstituted American garage rock through all of it. Petty often gets lumped in with artists like Bruce Springsteen, whose careful and worked-over lyrics carry a kind of instant nostalgia, but Petty’s songwriting at its best cleverly bounces off of romance clichés, often with a desperate, lustful drawl and sneer, and he’s usually been more concerned with the here and now than he is about musing about what’s been abused and lost in contemporary America, although he’s certainly not blind to it. Petty has always been more immediate than that — until now, that is. Mojo is Petty’s umpteenth album, and technically the first he’s done with the Heartbreakers since 2002’s sly The Last DJ. This time out he’s tackling the blues, trying to graft the Heartbreakers’ (Mike Campbell on guitar, Scott Thurston on guitar and harmonica, Benmont Tench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, and Steve Ferrone on drums) patented 1960s garage sound to the Chicago blues sound of Chess Records in the 1950s. Sonically it certainly works, mostly because this is a wonderful band, but then it all seems a little tired, worn, and exhausted, too, and not a single song here has that certain desperate, determined defiance that Petty has always delivered in the past with a knowing sneer and a little leering wink. The opener, “Jefferson Jericho Blues,” is a case in point. It starts by being a song about Thomas Jefferson’s dalliance with one of his black maids, and it could have been a scathing indictment of an out-of-date Southern attitude, contemporary racism, and so much more. Instead, it tumbles unfocused into, well, a song about missing a girl and how time moves slow, and one can’t help but wonder why Petty dragged Thomas Jefferson and his maid into any of it in the first place. Petty has never sounded so emotionally drained and detached as a vocalist as he does on this album, and while it’s nice to hear the Heartbreakers flirt with the blues — and to hear Campbell’s clear, precise slide guitar playing — there’s no excuse for not having solid songs to scaffold it. There’s a worn-out, regretful, and boringly meditative tone to so many tracks here — this is not what one expects from a band that rocks as fine as this one can. Again, the playing is solid, but one wishes Petty & the Heartbreakers had simply covered some of those old Chess classics rather than trying half-heartedly to write their own — it would have made for an album closer to intent.
