Life to play for: The trumpet player Martin Dahanukar portrays special people together with his fellow musicians on the new album “Polaroyde” or tells of intense moments of life. The resulting poetic sound images are reminiscent of stills from the Nouvelle Vague of French cinema. Earthy drive is provided by percussionist Willy Kotoun and double bassist Philipp Moll. On guitar, Dimitri Howald lends the music lyrical breadths and space for the mysterious, suspenseful trumpet sounds in the burgeoning microcosm of the ballads.

As the lead guitarist for Jethro Tull, Martin Barre has been joined at the hip to Ian Anderson since 1969, when he replaced Mick Abrahams in the group’s lineup. His playing has provided much of the energy that allows the band to soar on record and in concert amid the beauty of Anderson’s melodies and the complexity of his lyrics, and played no small part in helping the veteran band (some would say “dinosaur”) win the 1988 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Album for Crest of a Knave. Anderson himself has been quoted as saying, “Without Martin Barre, Jethro Tull could not exist.”

For Martin Kemp and his wife Shirlie, recording a Swing album together has been as much of a surprise to them as it will no doubt be to their fans. Separately the ’80s icons have enjoyed huge chart success over the decades with the Brit Award-winning Spandau Ballet and as one half of Pepsi and Shirlie, touring with best friend George Michael when they were backing singers in the glory days of Wham! Yet, up until the summer of 2019, the only singing the couple did together was probably in the kitchen while cooking a Sunday roast. Martin had been working on a solo album with super producer Brian Rawling (Cher, Tina Turner, One Direction) when he invited his wife to step back into the recording studio for the first time in 30 years to help him out on a track. What came from the impromptu session was pure ‘magic’ and the album ‘In the Swing of It’ was born. The album is an ‘open love letter’ of carefully selected, uplifting Swing covers, chosen by the couple to reflect on their relationship and includes two new tracks written by their songwriter daughter Harleymoon Kemp.

Martial Solal with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen & Daniel Humair – Suite for Trio (1978/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

Martial Solal with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen & Daniel Humair – Suite for Trio (1978/2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 42:10 minutes | 798 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © MPS

On this MPS release Solal teams up with jazz giants German bassist Niels-Henning Pederson and Swiss drummer Daniel Humair in what music journalist Karl Lippegaus described as “a European dream trio”. Solal originals grace the first three album tracks. Coming Yesterday features Solal and Pederson playing the difficult melody line in unison, followed by an inventive piano solo and Pederson’s exploratory play punctuated by Solal’s pointillistic chordal jabs. No Delay swings from postimpressionist modernism on through to a Latin feel and into a bluesy bass solo in a rollercoaster ride of musical emotions. Suite For Two again displays Solal’s creative genius as it pushes musical boundaries in what could be described as ‘Solal jazz’. Solal’s abstract introduction to ‘S Wonderful settles down to a swinging version of the Gershwin classic, replete with humorous pianistic asides and some tasty brush work by Humair. Cherokee, the piece that Charlie Parker used to redefine jazz improvisation, starts off with Pederson playing over the changes before Solal dismembers then reconstructs the piece. After each trio member has a short solo say on Here’s That Rainy Day, the band takes on the standard at an up-tempo pace. Humair segues the trio into a dark rock beat as they walk away into the mist. A superb trio with surprises around every bend of the musical road.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 41:49 minutes | 759 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © MPS

On this incredible solo album, one Solal original is followed by 9 classic standards – stylistic masterpieces as only Martial Solal can play them. Although played in traditional jazz blues fashion, M.B.S. Blues features Solal’s inimitable approach – a mixture of off-the-wall spontaneity and tradition. On Green Dolphin Street Solal forgoes the melody and choses an open improvisational approach with some hip quotes thrown in. There’s a beautiful ballad rendition of Stars Fell Over Alabama, and on Crazy Rhythm Solal takes a straight-ahead joyous medium-up romp. A dark, dissonant beginning to All the Things You Are morphs into a virtuoso attack on the piece from a variety of directions. Solal clothes Satin Doll in all sorts of autre musical garments whereas Nice Work if You Can Get It plays around with harmonies, rhythms, and dynamics. Django Reinhardt’s Nuages receives an impressionistic treatment, stretching the piece’s possibilities far beyond what Solal must have played when he worked with the legendary guitarist. Gershwin’s Fascinating Rhythm flashes by with a speedy walking left hand bass line, chromatic runs and a bit of stride, while April In Paris shines a light on the city’s (and Solal’s) many sides. Famed jazz critic Whitney Balliatt called jazz ‘the sound of surprise’. He could have been defining Martial Solal. A jazz original at his ingenious best.

Marti Pellow – Stargazer (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © BMG Rights Management (UK) Ltd

‘Stargazer’ is the latest instalment in a remarkable solo career that’s seen Pellow embark on a new project pretty much every other year since he left multi-platinum selling pop sensations Wet Wet Wet in 1999. He’s done more as a solo artist, for longer, than he did as frontman with the totemic pop band who dominated the British charts in the Eighties and Nineties. How, then, did this prolific artist approach the creation of ‘Stargazer’, a collection of new songs that in part pay homage to his love of everyone from David Bowie to Harry Nilsson, Curtis Mayfield to John Lennon? Pellow says, ‘I believe Stargazer is about imagination, every day is a school day in songwriting, and that’s what this album took me back to. It was a big learning process’. Largely recorded over two, four-day socially-distanced studio sessions in Monnow Valley, Wales, the rich, occasionally epic, beautifully played and orchestrated tracks were mostly recorded live as a stream-of-consciousness in two or three takes. Accompanying Pellow in the studio were brothers drummer Jeremy and guitarist Paul Stacey (The Lemon Trees), with Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp) on bass, and James Halliwell (The Waterboys) on keyboards.

Martha Wainwright – Love Will Be Reborn (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 48:53 minutes | 551 MB | Genre: Folk Rock, Female Vocal
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Cooking Vinyl Limited

Martha Wainwright is beginning again. The beguiling performer and songwriter makes a most welcome return with Love Will Be Reborn, her first new album in five years. It’s her first album since 2016’s Goodnight City, and the first since 2012’s acclaimed Come Home To Mama to feature so much original material. All eleven songs on Love Will Be Reborn are written by Martha. She wrote the first song, and what would become the title track, a few years ago in what was a very dark time for her personally. The title track hints at the ache of recent years while capturing a sense of optimism for the future. She wraps her wondrous, trademark vocals around the heartbreak to dizzying effect. “I wrote the song in its entirety within ten or fifteen minutes,” she admits.” I was bawling.”

Martha began to play the song live before she recorded the album and it became something of an anthem, giving her hope when it was most needed. The song, and the entire album, was produced by Pierre Marchand, best known for his work with Rufus Wainwright on Poses, the McGarrigle’s on Heartbeats Accelerating and much of Sarah McLaughlin’s 90’s catalogue. Recorded in Martha’s Montreal hometown, the album was made in the basement of caf’e Ursa which also served as a studio and at PM Studios. Martha plays guitar and piano and enlisted the help of Toronto musicians Thom Gill (guitars, keys, back-ups) Phil Melanson (drums, percussion) and Josh Cole (bass). Pierre Marchand plays keyboards on Love Will Be Reborn plus two other tracks while Morgan Moore plays bass on several songs.

Martha Ffion – Sunday Best (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 28:21 minutes | 340 MB | Genre: Indie Folk, Singer-Songwriter
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Turnstile

Irish-born, and now Glasgow based singer-songwriter Martha Ffion announces new album entitled ‘Sunday Best’ which will be released on Turnstile in early 2018. To celebrate the news Martha Ffion has also released a track from the album – the wonderful ‘We Make Do’. Initially breaking through with a ‘postcard single’ on Scotland’s flourishing Lost Map label, Ffion’s reputation soared with last year’s ‘Trip’ EP, that was released by Turnstile Music (Cate Le Bon, Gruff Rhys, Charlotte Church, Emmy the Great etc.) and championed by GoldFlakePaint for its “beautifully melodic sway”. Written entirely in Glasgow since her move from a distinct Catholic upbringing in smalltown Ireland, and recorded with her full live band by Jamie Savage at Glasgow’s Chem 19 Studio (King Creosote, The Twilight Sad, Emma Pollock), Ffion’s debut album spans the first songs she properly wrote to her most recent compositions, and is by far her most adventurous and accomplished work to-date, the lush instrumentation bringing her detailed lyrical vision to life through a series of gleaming guitar-pop songs that drift between soft-centred balladry and something altogether more cutting and forceful. Recalling the work of Sharon Van Etten and Jenny Lewis, while still sounding thrillingly distinct, ‘Sunday Best’ is a formidable coming-of-age record, and one that stands as a truly accomplished debut.
